Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Over-Ear

Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Over-Ear

DESCRIPTION

The DT 990 Pro are one of Beyerdynamic's old standard closed headphones. They're durable, comfortable, and sonically pleasing, with slightly strident highs and good bass. At 250 Ohms, they ask too much for a portable, so an amp is recommended.

To begin, I am NOT versed in the finer details of audio equipment, nor do I have the vocabulary of the equipment mongers. What I do have is a musician's ear, and I know what I want to hear, from a full orchestra to a single piano to Spyro Gyra to Sting to Van Halen to a bagpipe and drum corps, and so on. The DT990 Pro was recommended to me by a friend of mine who does the morning show on a local radio station, and has had a set at his seat for years. I had been shopping for a set of phones for several months, because you just can't let Epicure Model 2's sing at 10:30 PM with a toddler asleep! I had auditioned several of the mid to mid-high Sennheisers and Sony's (gag), and was ready to bite the bullet on a $300 set of Senn's when my friend's description actually made me pick these up unauditioned. To be quite honest, I'm having the time of my life revisiting ALL of my music. Due to the open air design, if the house is noisy, it'll work itself into the picture. The sound that is presented to your ears is as clean as I've ever heard, and I can come close to concert hall seats - partially due to the brightness that others have mentioned - but only if that's what is on the recording!! I truly believe that these phones will simply give you what's on your CD, and will pull no punches in the process. You will hear things you'd not heard before, even with the ability of these phones to knit all the voices together, rather than them sounding like a vocal there and a guitar over there. Plus, the lack of the "bass you can feel" is more than adequately replaced by an awesome presentation of the lowest frequencies, smoothly across the range, to your ears. They are VERY comfortable, and I haven't experienced any discomfort even after a couple hours. Online research for best price worked very well.
Beautiful sounding set of headphones.

Strength:

bass, detail, air

Weakness:

air can sound bright with a bad source

I just got some Sennheiser hd580's, which I expect will give the beyer's a run for the money. But so far, the Beyer's have more detail, air, and more bass. The 580's seem more listenable over the long-term, however, and are more comfortable. The Beyer's are comfy, but the 580's are a little better. I use a Creek headphone amp. I think the Beyer's may be better paired with a tubed headphone amp, which I don't have. I plan to hold onto both pairs, as I think highly of both.

Strength:

its openess, the bass, the accurate and detailed sound, comfort on the ears (very soft)

Weakness:

high tones are somewhat to bright

Is this really a remarkable product. The air and detail in the sound is almost unbelievable. The sound is better than an electrostatic earphone because of the much better bass.
