Strength:

Perfect freq-response, great sound, awesome distortion-free power handling, no feedback (even at high volumes), comfortable for long-term wear, easily portable (fold 'em up, and stick 'em in the protective bag (included))

Weakness:

The MDV-7506's used to be called something different (MDR-V6, I think!), and I've been using this model ever since, both professionally and for home use. The ONLY consistant problem I've had is that the headphone cord shorts out. Unlike with the Sennheiser's, this isn't a real easy replacement procedure. Typically, when the cord finally shorts out (and it's a wimpy little cord, too!), you need to buy another pair. Then again, I've been using mine 12 hours a day!

I've been in the audio production industry for the past 18 years, and I've tried countless different brands and models of headphones. The ONE that has the truest, clearest sound has always been the Sony MDV-7506! I may use different models for different uses (ie, I use a bass-heavy pair of Sennheiser's for on-air work (they make me sound more rumbly than I really am)), but if I need to know what something REALLY sounds like?? The MDV-7506's are the ONLY headphones to trust. They're comfortable to wear for long periods--moreso than any other "over the ear" models I've tried, anyway--and the audio is clear, accessible, and flat. With the MDV-7506's, what you hear is what is THERE! PERIOD! There are headphones with greater price-tags--many of them! But there are NO headphones at ANY price with greater performance than the MDV-7506's.

Similar Products Used:

Five or six different models of Sennheisers, plus a couple different "consumer-grade" pairs of Sony's, which sucked compared to the MDV-7506's.

Strength:

- Good bass, clear mids/heights - Fair price - easy to drive without headamp

Weakness:

- a bit too agressive and itchy in the heights - hot ears, because they are closed

Hi, after being searching for some while to get some good headphones, and reading all the confusing reviews on Sennheisers and Beyerdynamics (I wanted to buy one of these, first), I finally bought the Sony's at a reasonable price. What shall I say, simply impressive, I like Rock/Metal, even Trance, and I am a bass-fetishist :-) Well, these headphones completely managed to convince me, fat bass, and crystal clear hights, sometimes a bit too irchy, even painful at high volumes, but what do you have an equalizer for... :-) I have tried them with my soundblaster Audigy soundcard (excellent when set to Headphones in surround-mixer application), and with my cheap DVD Player, as well as my portable. Since the impedancy is still quite low (63 Ohm), the do not necessarily require an extra heafphone amplifier, they just work out of most devices! And, they are quite comfortable to wear, besides the "hot-ear-effect", but that's fairly normal with closed phones :-)

Strength:

Construction, sound, price.

Weakness:

Can be harsh highs, and the sound is very revealing, so i wouldn't buy it if you like MP3s...

I got these in Stockholm at a rip-off price, (around 160 euro/dollars), but i needed them rapidly for the flight home. And i'm not at all regretting the purchase. I bought them, let them play a looped MD for 2 days, and then left sweden, the 6 hour journey from Norrkoping to Dublin was Fantastic thanks to these phones. The sound is phenomenol, The Midrange and highs are crystal clear, and the bass, is Extrardinary! While listening to techno its the closet to being in a Club that you can be with headphones, I've never heard such fantastic bass out of any set of headphones, and thats including higher end sennheiser models. The only downside is that the Highs can be a bit too sharp and revealing, but if you have an EQ on your MD or CD, then these ARE the perfect headphones, they truly are Reference headphones. If you need closed headphones, look no further, if you just need headphones, i'd still pick these over any grados, they have the classic reference quality of sound the grados have, except with good bass. I certainly would pick them out over the Closed senheiser models, which are not quite good enough sound wise, And i would pick them out over Sennheiser for Portable audio too, because they are so easily driven. thats it really, great sound, industrial construction, great value even when you'r paying double the normal price...

Strength:

i''ve been using them for going on 12 years...

Weakness:

the ear pads do give out, but http://www.beyerdynamic.com has some that fit perfect and feel better. (DT 250 pads)

i originally wrote a review quite a while back and wanted to give an update. the pleather ear pads finally gave out and started shedding al over me when i wore them. that stuff was a pain to get off because it stuck to you so it didnt just brush off. i came back here last week and saw someone talking about the beyerdynamic DT 250 ear pads filling the 7506''s. anyway, i went to http://www.beyerdynamic.com and ordered the velour pads for $21+$6 shipping. they came in the other day, i installed them, re-using the center fabric from the original pads (the beyer pads dont come with them, if you dont use the originals you can see the driver) and i am once again super happy to have use of my 7506''s again!!! the pads are top notch and feel much better than the originals, even when they were new and weren''t shedding on me.

Strength:

Warm, resonant, clear sound. Accurate reproduction of the music as the artist intended (take a close look at a picture of your favorite artist in the recording studio, you just might see a set of 7506''s)

Weakness:

your mp3 collection is useless with these headphones. One can clearly hear the frequency limitations of mp3''s with these phones. Easy to spot with their "belongs in the studio" look, but I''m one for functonality over form.

What more can be said. I can only echo what the other reviews clearly state. Clear, resonant, flat response, durable, comfortable. It is difficult to describe the sound the 7506''s acheive when connected to a portable cd-player, so I will just say take your mini-disc, cd walkman, or whatever to your local stereo shop and try a pair of these. You won''t be dissappointed. ( The spectral analysis mentioned in Scott''s review helps a bit: http://music.multimedian.com/reviews/7506.html )

Strength:

accurate and dynamic sound, portable, good build quality

Weakness:

analytical, will reveal flaws in sources and recordings

I have posted a review on these headphones already last year, shortly after purchasing them. Unfortunately, I learned that it''s not a good idea to judge new headphones so quickly, since they might burning in and one might need to get accustomed to their sound. Meanwhile, the 7506s are my favorite headphones over all others I listened to. Their strength lies in their very clear and dynamic sound while providing unbiased reproduction in the full frequency range. In comparison, other headphones I tried tend to sound relatively dull and veiled. Comparing them to my Sennheiser HD-560s, the 560s seem have to have the ability to make music sound pleasant, even it has flaws. For example, sometimes I watch DivX TV episodes on my PC that have a very poor audio quality. With the Sonys, these sound absolutely horrible, while the Sennheisers envelope the poor signal in their velvet sound and make it listenable. For general listening, the Sennheisers are too soft sounding compared to the impactful sound of the 7506s. The electrostats I listened to (Unipolar and SR-5) sounded even more transparent, but heavily lacked low frequency reproduction.

Strength:

Clear Sound. Clear Bass. Not too bright treble. Construction. Almost everything!

Weakness:

Comfort.

I got these for my portable Minidisc player after a friend recommended them to me. I was previously using Sony earphones. Don't remember the model no. but it cost $50. Uncomfortable as hell. Bass setting on my portable is 1 (out of 3). I am not a bass freak but I find plenty of it. At home my amplifier (Arcam) is set to source direct. I don't play with bass and treble.

Can't add much to what's already been said but I notice a reviewer has mentioned comfort as a strenght. I'd disagree on that. They don't completely envelope the ears but isolation is pretty good. I don't have large ears but they hurt on the left. Maybe because I wear glasses but it's the uppermost part which is uncomfortable, so I doubt it. Tried without glasses as well and it's still uncomfortable. My reference is the HD 600 which I use at home. Sound is very close (for half the price, I paid $192 for the Sennheisers. Brand new!).

I bought these blindly (found them only on one UK website for $250). I later noticed Amazon do the commercial version of these cans, the MDR-V6. And it costs $30-40 less.

If you want a pair of decent cans audition these. If you find them comfortable, BUY IT! You'll have to pay much more for a significant improvement in sound.

Strength:

Clear sound. Construction. Superb, tight bass.

Weakness:

None found

For $100, these are the best buy headphones, period. Good pro like construction. Plug case is METAL, not cheap plastic. Coiled cord is nice. They fold up a bit. Sealed
earcushions. Very neutral sound. Not at all harsh. Incredibly low bass, and lots of it when required...these are not boomy headphones, they are just very bass capable.
If the bass is in the recording, it will be heard. The only headphones (dynamic) that I have ever heard which can challenge these are the Sennheiser 600's, which I also use.
The Sony's are less than 1/3 the price of the 600's, and in some ways, sound better. The Grado SR60's are no match for the Sony's... they are thin and bassless. The Sony MDR7506 are an absolutely outstanding headphone. Whats more, they are VERY efficient...don't take much power to drive them. So they are great for portables. Highly recommended.

Nothing

Most will think I'm nuts but oh well. I tried the Grado SR60, returned them. Tried the SR80, returned them. I don't like open air cans, as much as I tried. Also, not enough bass and no, I'm not a bass nut. I didn't like the foam pads on the grados as well. They were very uncomfortable. These Sony cans are great, sure your ears sweat, but that's the nature. Sure, you can't hear anything else when wearing them but that's how I like it when I'm listening to headphones. For $100 I'm happy. PS- I push it with a Panasonic SL-SW869 personal CD player, the combo is awsome. I highly recommend the CD player as well. Good luck.
