Sony MDR-V900 Over-Ear

Sony MDR-V900 Over-Ear

DESCRIPTION

The MDR-V900 is an around-the-ear professional headphone that is ideal for sound monitoring in recording studios, radio, film production, video and virtually any application where high quality sound is required. The over-the-ear design follows the natural shape of the human ear, and positions the driver unit at a correct distance from the ear canal and creates a sealed resonance chamber.

Strength:

General sound quality, around-the-ear comfort

Weakness:

Overaggressive bass - could be an annoyance to portable users without EQs

Recommended. Yes, the bass is a bit overaggressive, but it can tempered with the EQ. For general sound quality and around-the-ear comfort, this is by far the best Sony for the price. The V700 does have cleaner bass, is $30 cheaper, and is comparable in sound quality, but I literally couldn't wear it for more than 10 minutes because it was so uncomfortable on the ears.

Strength:

comfort and the cord is nice.

Weakness:

material on the top of phones is lose, thats annoying.

I don't have an awfuly lot to say about the headphones. They are overpriced. I expected alot more from them since I paid soo much for them. However, they are very very comfortable. They work ok with my sony walkman and plugged into my klipsch promedia 4.1 multimedia speakers. The only other headphones that I have to compare these to is my cheap sony ones. They actually do a really nice job of keeping up with these, which is pathetic. These are very loud, they are very comfortable and they really block out every other sound around you. They also sound decent. If you want to pay that much for comfort and such, then I think it is a good buy, but I think that is where your money is going in these headphones.

very high quality sound
comfortable

Weakness:

absolutly none

These are an incredible pair of headphones. If you are looking for some phones that will blow your ears before you can blow the headphones, these are for you. They produce sound with incredible realism. I listened to a track with a storm in the background, and I thought it was happening outside, REALLY I DID. They have a crisp clear high end, great mid range, and a very good low end, it can be cranked without any distortion. These have a whipping 50mm driver, with 3000mw off power handling, 3 times that of most sonys. I see lots of people with the V600s, THOSE CANT EVER COMPARE TO THESE. I had them for about 4 months, but was sick of the crappy bass and high end. These solved my problem. Some might say that $250 is an awfully large amount to spend on headphones, but they cant be beat. They were worth every penny. Your can REALLY tell where that extra $150 went. They sound just as good as any sennheiser model, only they get much louder too. I encourage ANYONE to shell out the $150 more to upgrade from the V600 to these, you'll thank me!

Strength:

Sound, quality,

Weakness:

None.

I can't remember when I bought these headphones. I think it was back in 1995 but I could be out a year. The reviews on sound quality speak for themselves. What I'm getting at is the longevity of this unit. Over the years I have enjoyed many, many hours of quality, care-free listening. The mids and highs are soft. The bass is tight and easy on the ears. I highly recommend these headphones. It's hard nowadays to find something that lasts more than a few years. Also, It's hard to find something that never has to be fixed or replaced in a short time. That hasn't been the case with these headphones. Enjoy.

Strength:

sound is adequate, nothing special

Weakness:

Low end sounded boomy

This headphone sounds as if I was listening to music in a tunnel. The bass is quite boomy and the highs are not clear. Vocals sound nasaly and distorted.

Not much if any improvement over the $10 headphones that came with my Sony Walkman

Strength:

Loud

Weakness:

Boomy, resonance-filled (though not as bad as MDR-V600), overpriced.

I used to own these headphones, and rated them very highly before - but that was when I knew nothing but bass. Since I bought my Sennheiser HD 590's, however, I knew exactly what I had been missing - clear, balanced sound. The Sony MDR-V900's were definitely lacking. Big boomy bass and slightly ringing mids and highs - though not as excessive as the MDR-V600 sibling. On some decent equipment nonetheless.

The moral of this review is: If you buy Sony, you're paying WAY too much for the name. I will have to revise my overall and value ratings, since I knew that almost all sealed headphones are inferior to the better open-air ones. Even so, there are better sealed headphones than the MDR-V900 for the average street price between $150 and $200.

Strength:

Excellent sound quality for closed back headphones.

Weakness:

A little heavy on the head after a few hours, but generally very comfortable.

Most of the time I have a nice pair of Sennheiser's, but for my purpose I needed a closed back headphone. I generally shun Sony, but I decided to give these a shot. For general MD/CD use these might be the best headphones, they take very little battery power and considering the source they'll get you the best audio possible. For home stereo use it'll require a bit of EQ work, but irregularities can be worked out (and if you're spending this much on headphones you better damn well know how to use an EQ.)

Even without the EQ these are about the best you can do for closed back. For a computer the sound is great, unfourtunatly if an mp3 is ripped poorly you can really hear every nuance.

In conclusion if you're looking for a pair of headphones I'd suggest openback Sennheiser, but if you need closed back you absolutly can't go wrong here.

Strength:

Decent overall sound, very efficient and is easily powered directly by portable CD players.

Weakness:

Coiled connecting cord, somewhat heavy but comfortable, not great value

Pleasant warm sound, with deep but not very detailed bass.
Would be good choice if you listen to rock Cds only, especially ones with bright/edgy treble, as these phones very nicely round the edges and tame hard treble but still give decent detail. Main short coming is it does not retrieve the fine detail or capture the air/ambience of excellent cans like Senn HD580 which is superior in all respects and can be purchased from Audio Advisor for $169. The V900 sound somewhat veiled in comparison although produce slightly deeper bass.

Coiled cord is useless and limits use of cans, straight cord
would have been much better. If you want to use with portable CDP the V900s can be easily be driven straight from player, unlike Senn HD580 which is not efficient enough and requires amp. Actually for cans to be powered directly from portable I slightly prefer the Senn HD495 which can be bought for $80 on the net over the V900s.

Strength:

Sound quality, Dynamic range, Comfort, looks.

Weakness:

Price... But I was in a rush to get them for a trip to Paris, so I'm sure I could have found a better one online if I had the time.

I absouliuty love these damn things! I got them in a rush for a trip to paris a year ago, I didn't have much time to do reserch on products or prices. A friend told me about them, how the professional version of them are used in most sound studios for sound design. (The pro version is the same, but looks differnt and ussaly can get a better price)So I ran out to my local Sony Store and got them. Very expensive at that place, but I didn't care at the time.

Comfort:
I had these things on for almost the full fight to Paris and Back. Only to take off for eating and qualifing for the Mile High Club Soloest licence. They now live on my head every day of work listening to MP3s. Once in a while I'll take them off for a break, but it never long till there back on.

Sound Quality:
It's about as clean as you can get! After listening to stuff on them, other systems like cars or homes with 20K systems sound wrong. Some people say they are boomy down low, and I'll agree that they arn't "Reference" but I think that its good coloring that brings out the best in all I listen to.

Dynamic Range:
I listen to a lot of crap, from Jazz to Hip hip to cutting video. I can hear little noises and subbass that only a home system with 15" sub would put out. This is great for cutting video, sub 30 stuff is importain to keep track of, I almost can't believe I can here that stuff on these things.

Anyway, I really love these headphones and I recommend them to anyone who askes. I'm sure there are more "accurate" ones out there, but I can't comment on them. These are very expensive thans to the sony name, but like I've said before look for the profession equivelent. There not as pretty, but much cheaper!
