Strength:

It has all the features one would ask for in a DVD.

Weakness:

Doesn't respond to the remote accordingly sometimes.

Excelent price quality realtionship. I would have paid much more for this product. It works fantastically although it has acted strangely with some movie menus, sometime. If you are very demanding and are looking for a good solid product, for a low price, I would recommend you this DVD. I have looked at many others (Samsung, Sony, etc.) and I have seen more expensive and less versatile DVDs. Clearly a recomendation.

Strength:

CDR/RW playback, price, optical output, extremely lightweight, awesome picture and sound

Weakness:

MP3 playback, funky remote, very slow load time, lack of features in audio playback (CD audio & especially MP3)

I love the DVD and CDR/RW playback features on this model, but I cannot seem to get it to play MP3's correctly. I organized my files in directories. Half of them show up on the list when it reads the disc and then only half of them actually play the song (usually 10-15 seconds worth of it) and then goes to the next track. I was wondering if there was something wrong with my model. I looked at Aiwa's website only to find that they have the XD-290 listed and nothing above. What a disappointment. Besides the MP3 capability, this DVD player has met all my expectations. The load time is a little slow, but it runs smoothly and quickly thereafter. The on-screen displays are wonderful and the player is very self-explanatory.

Strength:

Plays DVD's well, no skipping spotted. Will play just about everything under the sun.

Weakness:

LOOOOONG load times for MP3's and music CD's. MP3 playback will often miss first 10 seconds of song.

What this system does well is play DVD's. I've NEVER seen this thing skip yet, even with dirty scratched DVD's. The picture is great, it does black well, and the sound is crisp.

Like other MP3 capable players, the MP3 aspect is really still just tacked on for extra sales. I've burned about 20 CD's with various modes and different media (TDK, Sony, and other CD-R's) and the MP3 playback is sorta shoddy. You can only see the first eight letters, you can't randomly playback the mp3's.

What makes it worse (as a couple of other people had mentioned) is that about 20% of the time the first 20 seconds of an MP3 track will just disappear.

Lastly, the load time on the MP3 disks takes FOREVER. My god, your party will be over before you start bragging about how your system can play for 10 hours before swapping disks. To test I just burned 4 songs onto a CD-R, and it still took like 50 seconds to load the disk. Music CD's can take around 20 seconds to load. DVD's load pretty faster however.

As a DVD player, the Aiwa 370 looks great, and plays great, and sounds great. If you are patient for the 30 second load time, it will play music CD's without skipping.

I've yet to see a DVD player maker seriously address the mp3 aspect other than just "throwing it in"

Strength:

MP3 Playback, Video/Audio Quality, Multi-Region Capability?

Weakness:

None

I got this for $200 at CC last week. It has much better video/audio quality than my one year old Apex.
I needed a more reliable main DVD player to compliment my sometimes finicky LH Apex. It still needs to be able to play my VCD collection on CDR's. I was also looking at the Pioneer DV333 for the same price. The MP3 feature on the Aiwa won out.
Overall the DTS output quality through my Pioneer VSXD509S is just amazing. This is a highly recommended DVD player if you need MP3 capability in a name-brand product.
I am a little confused on its multi-region capability. The hack "pause" 314159 "pause" came up but after setting it to region "0", I still had trouble playing a few region 6 DVD's that the Apex handled with ease.

Strength:

Plays all formats, price

Weakness:

Slow load time

I'm very pleased with this unit. I took burned audio CD's and MP3 CD's to Best Buy and Circuit City to be sure they would play (at least the audio CD's) and very few machines would even recognize them. The Aiwa recognized, loaded, and played them all without fail. Quick sale!

DVD play is excellent, as is DTS sound through the optical outputs to my Sony STR-DE945.

MP3 play is an added bonus and not the reason I bought the machine. There are no MP3 bells and whistles but it does play them excellently.

Some reviewers didn't like the remote. I found it more than satisfactory.

I strongly recommend the machine for quality as well as price.

Plays mp3, cdr, cdrw, and dvd

Just got this product at beginning of December 2000. I have a Sony multi disc DVD player that plays Cdrs but does not have a dts output or play mp3s or cdrws. I have already played mp3s, cdrs, cdrws, and dts and dolby digital DVDs with great results. I also liked the zoom feature on the DVD menu. For the price and versatility, I cannot think of a better player out there. I passed on the apex because it is rumored to have problems playing certain DVDs and it does not have component video outputs.

Able to play DVD,VCD,CDR,CDRW,MP3 and Pal/NTSC.

Weakness:

None.

I bought a Toshiba 1600 and a Panasonic rv30. Returned them both because of lack of features. Then i picked up the Aiwa XD-DV370 and was very satisfied. It plays everything! And to my surprise a friend told me of a muti-region hack. Located at http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/forums/thread.asp?Forum=176&Thread=8531 I tried it and it worked!! ;P Overall the picture quaility is very good, same as Toshiba and Panasonic if not better.. Has great zoom capabilities. The front case looks good too.

Strength:

Plays lots of various stuff, really good sound quality, and nice remote

Weakness:

Zooms only 4x and 16x. Wish it could do 2x (Bad for pan scan viewers)

Over the last couple of months, I have researched constantly for two things that a DVD player could do at the same time. That is, zoom 2x, and play CD-R, CD-RW, and VCDs. For some reason, I could never get this combination satisfied. I have researched up the butt hole to find the the one dvd player that can do that. It seems that this is probably as close as it gets. I've used the Philps DVD711, and I have not tested it at home, but I observed that this DVD player just pauses when I zoom in. When I bought the Apex, it did zoom in, but there was a problem: sound sucks big time. It seems that I will never get over this simple problem.
Overall, based on my comparison within these three DVD players, this was has swept me off my feet. It does well with everything I've used for it. There was a skip one time but that's not all that bad because I've played DVDs everyday during the holiday season. If it were any DVD player I would suggest, I would just suggest this one. With the more major brands like Sony S360, you would be paying at least fifty bucks more for a DVD player. For the Toshiba 1200, 1600, or 2109, you would only be able to play DVDs (Best suggestion for those who just play DVDs). For the Panasonic RV30 and the Pioneer, even though there are lots of features, there is no zoom features (very important in my opinion). The next best suggestion I would make would be to get the Philips dvd711 even though I heard of remote control and menu functions are unbearable, but I didn't think so at all. The Philips DVD711 is firmware upgradable as well and is able to play DVD-Rs which will be useful once DVD-Rs become popular in 6 to 12 months. And it has video black level control as well. Its just that the zoom feature is just a still feature. Its not something that you can continue playing and zoom at the same time. This is probably information that you cannot find anywhere else unless you research for a total of 8 days by the way. Well, if anyone has questions about DVD players in general, I will try to help you the best I can in making a decision. I know only about the DVD players that range between $99 to $250. Good luck!
