I bought an Apex Ad-1500 (D serie) as soon as I read the customers reviews on this site and others... I'm really not disapointed ! I love this DVD player. It's small, gorgeous and light, and works perfectly. I never had any problems with rental DVDs, even scratched. I bought the Apex machine in Montreal, Quebec for 138 $, (really nice price for a DVD player who plays MP3, CD-R and which is flashable, to disable the macrovision and open region free access !!!!) Love My Apex ! Don't hesitate, buy one (serie D better ? Mine is one of these actually and everything works perfectly). |

Strength:
Cheap, works great when it does work, good picture and sound even on an ancient console TV that still has an old style turn knob and no remote. Have been able to daisy chain it through two VCRs with no problems whatsoever.
Weakness:
APEX company needs a dictionary to help them define the term "Quality Control". I wouldn't suggest ever buying any DVD player from APEX, even as a first DVD player or even a cheap backup. It isn't reliable enough. I'm getting something else and using a drill on this one. It started out working beautifully, with more gadgets than we cared about. But only for about 2-3months. We've only had it 4 months and now we're lucky if it even recognizes what a DVD is. Great with MP3s, no problems with a stuck tray or weak remote, but once it warms up it gives you a constant "No-Disc" display and will refuse to play anything. Occasionally playing the "door open/door closed" game will get it to recognise the DVD, but only sometimes. It has no airvents for ventilation. WE had to move it up off the top of our console TV, and set it on four overturned coffee cups on an unused VCR in order to keep it cool. We still have to shoot it with canned air to cool it down sometimes. It still works intermittently. Movies will also halt and stop completely when it's too warm. My sister has a different model APEX DVD player and has problems with halting and it not playing the first song on some CDs. Similar Products Used: Only one other APEX DVD player. |

Price/Performance Small Size
Weakness:
Poor build quality Picture quality The price makes this unit attractive for the kids room or for someone just starting out. The low cost of the product shows up in several aspects (weight, build quality) and the picture is not as good as my much more expensive Pioneer Elite player. Plays MP3 discs and CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW with aplomb. Smaller footprint than typical sound equipment could be a plus or minus. I have heard about reliablity problems, but my 2 samples work just fine. Similar Products Used: Pioneer, Sony, Toshiba |

Strength:
Price, ease of use, good video & sound. Lots of features for a little money.
Weakness:
Does not quite measure up to my high-end DVD player costing 5 times more (duh). I bought this for my vacation home but ended up installing and using it in our master bedroom. The picture quality is good and the sound is also good. Both are better than I expected for the price. Everything works on my DVD and am glad I bought it. Looks like I will have to purchase another one for my vacation home now that it is in busy use in my master bedroom Similar Products Used: N/A |

Strength:
Cheap, good variety features.
Weakness:
Quality. My remote strength is weak. Lack of on-the-DVD player controller. Warranty. Service. This was a second DVD for the bedroom. It played for 4 months then either froze reading the first track or had [poor sound quality with sound spikes if it would actually play. E-mail to APEX and voice mail to customer service were not responded to. Finally a forceful call got me someone who told me it would cost $40+shipping to get it fixed because it was past the 3 month warranty with no budging. Escalating and complaing finally got the $40 fee waived. Similar Products Used: Panasonic DVD. |

Strength:
The strenghts are 1. its value for the money (cheap but plays everything the more expensive dvd players play). 2. it has a long list of features such as zoom, multi-angle and slow motion. 3. its sound and picture quality are far betterthan its price would suggest.
Weakness:
While this player has many features, it does have a cheap plastic look to it. Also, I suspect getting parts and service for it will invoke a great deal of laughter. The power ON light is far too bright and all functions must be accessed through the remote- not good if it is lost or broken! This is my first dvd player which I bought on the recommendation of a friend. I wanted a player that played everything but I didn''t want the to pay the high price of the other usual suspects. While I have only had it a few short months I have not had any problems with it. I have heard about the problems of the tray mechanism and the faulty buttons so I will keep an eye on it. My particular model is a D serial # series which I have heard seems to be the better of the lot. The sound is comparable with my TEAC cd player and the piucture is far suprior to my 4 head VCR.
