Strength:

Too new, only used once.

Weakness:

Didn't come with Apex remote control with is hard to use the features of the DVD.

Just purchased the Apex DVD AD-500W at the XS Cargo in Surrey, B.C. Canada on Boxing day, flyer item at $29.95. I was alittle unsure when most of these items at XS Carge are refurbished or returns and this DVD did not come with the Apex remote control. If I wanted one, they had a Universal 5 remote control for $15.00 which was reccommended for the on screen menu. They told me these DVD's still has all the manufacture warranty and were not all were repaired items . So, at that price I grabbed one, before they were all gone. I spent most of the next day trying to understand the DVD instructions in the manual and how to use the Universal remote. I'm still very confused with DVD instructions, to see a menu on my TV screen from the DVD or Remote. This is why I'm here, to find out more. Did all these units come without a remote control? If so, then how do you access the menu or setup on the TV from the DVD? Or, if only mine didn't come with the Apex remote, then how do I get one?

Weakness:

Doesn't play all formats Especially Disney

I bought this DVD player and didn't expect anything to be wrong with it. Boy was I wrong! It works great as long as you don't want to play any Disney DVD's they wont work on this player. And its a known problem and APEX wants to trade it for another DVD player for the low, low, price of $39 and the model I will get for that price is only $59 WOW what a deal huh? I'll never buy another APEX product again their Tech support sux!

Strength:

You can even watch your mpegs burned to CD. WOW!

Weakness:

CATION: Do not handle this model like a PS2. Do not move this item by holding it side ways. Keep it always flat because you may never get out of root mode. never hold DVD players sideways. Keep them horizontal when purchasing.

Apex AD-500 You can make this Region Free. Add 1.5 zoom. Get a new background and screen saver. **FIND THE WEBSITE**

everything and anything to do with this company and DVD player. I will never buy APEX again.

Horrible piece of ****. DO NOT BUY THIS AT ANY PRICE. If someone offers this DVD for $10 still don''t buy it. They offer it for free, don''t take it. Spend the $200 on the half way decent DVD players. Even if you don''t care about your quality of products, don''t buy this DVD player. Poorly contructed, poorly made, poorly supportly. This goes beyond sucking.

Strength:

CHEAP!

Weakness:

CHEAP!

This DVD player is inexpensive, and that is both it's strength and weakness. You get what you pay for. Subtitles were always on and it became frustrating everytime I started a movie. The Matrix skipped at 3 points during the movie. I could not get the subtitles to turn off on a couple Disney DVDs. I contacted customer support and got the same "customer service" as the previous reviewer - not much. All in all, I guess it was a good starting DVD player for the price, but if you really get into DVDs, purchase something else.

Purchased a Apex AD500 mid-November at Wal-Mart. So far I have played about 15 movies on this piece of junk and it has skipped several times on each movie. Today 1/1/2002 it is going back to Wal-Mart and I will bay the extra bucks amd get something that actually works. This was my first Apex product and I can tell you I will never buy another product from this company.

Strength:

It loads quick and it plays smooth. The picture quaity is great. Its easy to use and leaves more time to watch the movie instead of flipping through menus and for inexperianced people its perfect.

Weakness:

I have to agree with everyone else the remote is a little weak you have to point it right at the player. But for 90.00 what can you expect!! and no vent holes which must be bad it could overheat if played too long

This is an excellent beginner dvd player. I have owned for 3 days and watched 4 moviews on it but you get bag for your bucks. I have a simple 2 way receiver and no surround sound and it sounds flawless. Of course I would go get a good eq if you are running 2 way basic stereo. To make the sound jump out of the screen. I watched Tomb Raider and a scratched up Family Man( which never skipped) and The beach and Gone in 60 seconds. I love this player and you people having skipping problems must be doing something wrong. I put a tottally scratched up cd, this cd I couldnt play in a normal cd player in any not even top of the line, anyway the apex played it flawlessly. I was impressed. Well im saying that if you cant afford an expensive dvd player and want to have one this is a must!!!!!!!!

the real product model you have shown is ad 500 wm
the one i have great product so far if your looking
for a economical player but most people need to give these players time too load it's software so it'll have time to detect every thing that is attatched too it , don't expect to run this one through your vrc most vrc's will have problems with it the macrovision software in the apex ad 500 wm will work well and hack's for this dvd player are not remonded ...

Strength:

In-Expensive

Weakness:

Cheaply made

I was given an APEX AD-500 as a present in December of 2000. Barely a year later, it simply won't read any disc put into the tray. The problems began only days prior to the total malfunction. It would skip back to previously viewed scenes of the movie I was in the middle of, then it just simply froze not even the stop button on the remote or on the actual machine would work. When I wrote to customer support from their website, I was told that the DVD load went bad and to call customer service. The number I was given was a direct # to Ontario, Canada, no 1-800#. The first time the receptionist transferred me to someone's voicemail. The second time I asked how many people were in customer service to find out if it was just that one guy and she told me 8. Once finally speaking with a rep, he agreed that it was the DVD loader and informed me that I would have to ship the machine to Ontario at my own expense and then pay an additional $35.95 to replace the part. It would cost me the same amount to fix it as it would to replace it with a new one.
