Strength:

DVD play is good

Weakness:

Only played DVD format. Nothing else.

3 weeks ago I purchased the APEX AD-660 from Sams Club for the purpose of playing mp3 format. As soon as I got it home, I tried playing mp3's but they would not play. I then put a VCD CD in the AD-660 and it did not work as well.

I took the player back to Sams Club and exchanged it. The exchange AD-660 did the same thing. It only played DVD movies. nothing else.

What really frustrated me about this:
1. I have an APEX AD-500 that plays everything I have but the AD-660 will not play the same CD's.
2. I only have Saturday and Sunday available to call APEX and they are closed during these hours. (used email)

Audio output is low, must turn volume up when playing dvd's

My family and I have throughly enjoyed the Apex 660. We have encounter no problems as of yet and don't forsee any. 660 is great for the first time DVD buyer or someone looking to add a player to a den or bedroom. the video quality was great. We encounter no problems with difficult DVD like( Matrix, Etc.) I would recommend this product to anyone.

Strength:

Easy to read display, good video/audio quality, quick menu access, functional remote, many features for price.

Weakness:

runs warm, no component out, Zoom function not very good,
no dimmer for display, remote large, cannot power down from remote.

This is for the Apex AD-500W. Seems great for the price. Used only for DVD with DD and DTS. Picture and audio quality is similiar to the more expensive Toshiba could not tell a difference. Display panel is easy to read Toshiba is not at all. Have played about 15 DVD's on this with no problem even one that was scratched up pretty good, except for Lost in Space seemed to have locked up on menu but that has really been about it.
To scan chapter search is quick as is all other menu options. I got a good price on the Toshiba $120 and figured it was the better quality model but think I like the Apex a bit better, mainly for the display being easier to read as audio/video are similiar, though I dont like having to actually shut the machine off.
I have one more to look at Panasonic RV30K.

Strength:

Plays everything

Weakness:

Captions always on, no fiber optic audio out

unlike most posts every MP3 cd has played fine. The captions always being on was a little annoying at first. However I just ran across a movie (Bring It On) which I could not get the captions to turn off. I tried from the dvd menu yet they still showed up. and when you hit the s-title button the not available hand pops up in the top left hand corner. If anyone else has encountered this with this movie please respond

Plays Everything & Cheap!

Weakness:

Can't find Apex in my Universal remote guides( TV or Receiver)

I went to CC to get a $99 player for my parents for xmas. They were out and gave me this for $99 instead. So I said ring up two!. I was going to spend more, but this has worked great so far! I have not had any problems playing any disks. . . dvds (Matrix, Top Gun, X-men, Swingers), cds (very old & new), mp3s (3 disks I've used so far).

HERE IS A FIX FOR MP3. Like so many users I had same
problem with MP3's; no sound and clock rushing real fast.
I was using Easy Cd Creator that came with my computer
to burn CD's. I tried Nero 5.0 demo that I downloaded
from the internet. MP3's burned using Nero played fine
without resetting any tags even long song names played
fine even though it will display only first 8 or 10
characters on the TV. I just bought Nero 5.5 which have
some nice features including burning still pictures on
SVCD that played without any problem on my APEX 660.

Strength:

MP3 compatibility, extremely quick loading and navigating, sound quality is excellent and video quality is great too.

Weakness:

Can't fast forward or rewing mp3's.

A lot of people on this board don't know the first thing about CD formats, media or mp3 encoding.

If your model isn't playing your mp3 files, it's you! Your cheap proprietary software and el-crapo blank cd's are not going to work! Get some Sony, TDK, or even PNY or Verbatim blanks, and use some decent software like Nero to burn them. You might even want to re-encode the files with the Fraunhauffer encoder.

The mp3 capability works excellent for me using those formats/software/media. I use a Sony 10x Firewire burner.

The DVD player is QUICK! Fastest I've ever seen in my life, by far. Even faster than the 16X Pioneer computer drive I had. It's hard for me to rate video quality as I'm using a crappy Sharp :( TV ... however I have B&W speakers and MB Quart surround, and the sound quality is FABULOUS ... I would highly recommend this to anyone for what I got it for, mainly concert DVD's and mp3 capability. I wanted high quality sound and a decent picture for the money, as those are the things that I'm going to be doing with it. (yes, I know mp3 format sound quality sucks :)

I'm thoroughly convinced that is what I got.

HIGHLY recommended to anyone that knows what they are doing with media and encoding schemes. Another great thing is being able to upgrade the ROM.

This player's mp3 decoder is excellent, far better than outputting from a computer, even with a ground loop isolator.

Not recommded for people that buy 10 cent blank CD's and use junk like DirectCD.

Has played all of my DVD's fine so far. No subtitle problem for me, wierd.

Weakness:

People complain here about the subtitles on every time you stick in a dvd. Yea, it is kinda bothersom, but it takes one second to press the subtitile button and the the prob is taken care of. Bad programming on their part, yes, but get over it, lazy asses! LED display is pretty undeciperable, but when you're playing movies you don't use it anyway.

I have not used other DVD players to compare this one with. However, it does 95 percent of what any more expensive player can do. Price is king here for a casual videophile, you can't beat it.

FRIGGIN SUBTITLES... buggy ROM, and no MP3's... ARGHH

Well.. thanks for the link to the ROM information.. I'm going to try to downgrade the rom to the early "less buggy" rom version and see if that helps out.. Ive got a newer ad660 with the audio outs on the (if looking at the back) far left... the subtitles make me all sorts of angry.. not so much the mp3's I got this machine for my parents... and as if new technology isnt difficult for them as it is, all the bugs make it a pain in the dairy-aire... so I'll try downgrading and see what happens...

Strength:

MP3 - definitely
Another is its reviews here and elsewhere, relatively good for an inexpensive player

Weakness:

None so far, testing dual-layer formatted DVDs tonight, but got through "Meet the Parents," "Sweet and Lowdown," and "Hollow Man" without any slips, jumps or pixelations (UNLIKE the Samsung model below - NEVER BUY SAMSUNG - THEY WILL NOT REPLACE DEFECTIVE UNITS!!!).

I burned an MP3 in Mode 1 and the first time I put it in the DVD player didn't see all the tracks - I took it out and simply put it back in and the player saw all 39 tracks just fine. I do understand the numbers only go to 99 and then they repeat, but for an after-thought, this unit is amazing. After my experience with Samsung, I do not expect much from DVD manufacturers for years to come. After 2006, when TV goes digital, maybe the format will be eestablished, but the dual-layer formatted DVDs always pose a problem. If you don't have $300 for a great DVD with all the bells and whistles, or you don't have Dolby Digital inputs on your amp and RGB inputs on your television, or you don't want to spend $499 for a 60GB MP3 player - this unit is perfect! What more could you ask for?

Samsung DVD-709 - pure crap - sent in for repair twice and was guaranteed replacement until Samsung got the repair bill, then they recanted their replacement guarantee and left me stuck with a DVD player that doesn't work!!!
