Strength:

For the money, you can't find anything like it, that plays every format that I can think of.

Weakness:

It is a little delicate, treat it with care and caution, and you'll be fine.

This little unit is a great buy! I was weary of all the negative reviews, but if your careful, and watch how you load the discs, they won't jam up. I can see how easily they can get jammed up. the tray is not deep enough for the discs to sit in the carriage, so It's easy to get jammed.
So far every movie I've played (12) has played well. I HAVE noticed that, if I play a movie from carriage 1, I get some digital lag. But it I play the movies from the second or third carriage, no problems. So for the money, I love my little unit.

Strength:

price and features

Weakness:

remote and quality

My experience with this model has been horrible. The first one I bought I didn't even get to try. The
door mechanism jammed locking my DVD in the tray compartment. Not able to get my brand new
DVD out, I ripped the cover off and pulled the tray out with physical strength. Luckily I was able to get
my DVD out without any damage but I risked losing my return and warranty. Circuit City refunded my
purchase without any problem. Note: buy your product at a reputable store with a good return policy
and BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY for this model.

I bought my second unit from Buy.com. This time I threw in a blank CDR and the tray worked fine.
After a week of playing I started to notice popping sounds, lip sync loss and jitters. It also crashed
when playing Pitch Black's Menu. After three weeks it got so bad I ended sending this unit back for a
full refund. This has turned me off to the Apex brand. While the features and price cant be beat, the
quality is very poor and I wouldnt recommend buying this model until Apex improves the quality of this
unit.

Everything I said before (minus DD decoder)

Weakness:

Nada.. Well, I'll explain

GUYS, I just wanted to clear something up: I DON'T THINK THIS HAS A DOLDY DIGITAL DECODER BUILT IN.. I don't want to give people the wrong info- circuit city said that it does but the manual does not mention it (I don't know because I use a receiver for decoding).

Otherwise, I'm still very happy with the player.. I'll mention a few things that people have been pestering me about via email:
Yes, it's limited to an 8 filename limit for mp3 playback- I don't care much but, yes, I see how that can bother some people..

Yes, there's no power button on the remote- Does not effect me because I plug it into my receiver (when my receiver shuts of my dvd player shuts on)- It's actually better for me because I don't have to press power on TWICE. They both turn on at once saving me time.. Anyways, peace and head over to:
http://apexweb.terrashare.com
for loop hole menu info ( I do not endorse this - it will void your warranty- but people keep asking me for the site)

Weakness:

Pausing glitch

Just got off of the phone with APEX tech support. They stated that the pausing/hesitation glitch every 10 to 15 minutes is caused by the DVD loader. To fix the problem the unit will have to be sent to them to replace the loader (CD drive) mechanism. They say also that their WEB site http://apexdigitalinc.com/contactus.htm is about to be a reality and to look for some new firmware updates soon. Be aware that if your unit has the loophole firmware installed, they will not honor your warranty!

Found out that the 703A does not do MP3s and doesn't have 5.1 output but does have component Video. They finally put a power switch on the 703A remote!!!

Strength:

Plays MP3's, CD-R & CD-RW. Can be made region free.

Weakness:

No random play feature. Slow disk load. No remote power off.

For anyone who is consider buying this product, please beware that this is not your average Sony, or Panasonic product. It is APEX, it is cheap and does not have the same high level quality control as the major brands. With this in mind and if you're willing to take a chance, you could be rewarded with a pretty decent DVD/CD/VCD/MP3 player. There's almost a colt like following for Apex on the web. Here's the link to one of them: http://www.nerd-out.com/ If you're serious about buying the Apex, you should take a look at this forum first.

Strength:

Plays everything I put in. DVD/VCD/SVCD/MP3/CD...

Weakness:

video quality not as good as those name brand ones, but what to expect for $200? remote sux, no optic-out.

This unit is the most powerful one I have seen in the market of DVD players. It plays all the DVD/VCD/MP3/CD that I own and rented. Havn't got any problem with it yet. Especially after I upgrade the firmware to play all-region DVD and macrovision disabled, i am quite satisfied with it. The VCD video is not as good, which is the only part I am not satisfied with so far. But what do you expect for $200?
i am not to complaine about all the weakness here, cuz for $200, it's pretty much worth it.
by the way, does anyone has the problem that everytime you turn on this machine, the valume level is always at 16(loudest point)??

Read MP3/CDR/CDRW

Weakness:

Very Poor Quality!!!

I bought a 703 last November. Then just within one month, when I was playing Matrix, it suddenly stopped and "error" shown on panel. I could not open the tray and take it back to CC, the sales guy there used screw driver to "open" the tray to take my dics out. Then the manager told me it was physical damage and won't change a new one for me until I took the sales guy there.

Yesterday (4/22) when I was watching the Gladiator, suddenly the picture turn to black and white and roll from top to down continueously, very fast. I try to use RCA video line or S-video, whenever I turn on 703, even under screen saver mode, it will roll fastly. I took it to CC hours ago and not lucky anymore. Guys there told me I need to call APEX (no toll free number) and even I call them, it has only 90 days labor. I am too unlucky or APEX's quality is too bad?

Any idea? I know the it's video out problem.

Thanks.
Roy

Strength:

Multiple Features including DVD, VCD, CD/CD-R/CD-RW, MP3 and Karaoke playback.

Weakness:

Inconsistant manufacturing, i.e. no two units seem to be built the same. Be prepared to return yours within a week of use.

This unit generally works fine and will please anyone looking for multiple features in one box. If you are looking for super-duper DVD then move up to Progressive Scan or Nuon. Also, if you want to use the Dolby Digital decoder - you will have to run it through a compatible receiver.

However, if you want to play DVDs and CDs using standard RCA or S-Video connections, this unit produces good quality. It supports panned zoom and fast and slow playback. It will display in 4.3, 4.3LB or wide screen and has and avery easy to use on screen menu.

Lastly, the 3-trays let you mix your CD types. Put in a CD, an MP3 CD and a DVD, and let the good times roll.
