Here is an update - they have the AD-7702 in stock for replacement. I sent mine in and was told that they would send out a new AD-7702 in a couple of days. If you have one of the AD-7701's, I recommend getting it replaced if you are experiencing any problem with it. Dennis

Strength:

Remote features.

Weakness:

DVD play is sporadic.

Expecting great things from a machine recommended by MAXIM, I've bee very disappointed with the DVD play element. Some movies won't play and some won't play in Widescreen after selecting that option. Some DVDs I have to load then eject several times before they will play. When in pause too long, subtitles pop on. Pixalization occurs regularly. Sometimes menu options don't automatically appear. You have to press MENU for it to pop up. I hope the AD-7702 (replacement) is better and they honor their free exchange promise.

Everything about it

This product is garbage. SACD's would consistently stop playing. The remote is unintelligible and hard to get to work. The on screen navigation looks like it was programmed by a five year old, and not a particularly savvy one. If this model is any indication of the quality of other Apex units; avoid them at all costs. Not worth the dollars, especially when Sony has units in this price range.

I purchased it for an all-in-one unit. I too have had problems with the unit. I have pixelation on many discs, crackling from DVD-Audio, and no disc messages. I go confirmation from both Colton (public relations) and Robert Clark (Customer Service Supervisor) that I will get a replacement new model. They are aware of the problems and it seems to be with a Sony part. They said they are working with Sony to fix it. I will be able to get the new one with a full warranty when it comes out at no charge. So if any of you are having problems with your own AD-7701, contact them and get them to confirm replacement with the new model (don''t just get another, wait for the new model like I am).

Don''t waste your time. For 2 channel audio, this unit is muddy and soft in the bass. SACD''s would stop playing intermittently. Not worth the dollars, especially when Sony has units in this price range.

Strength:

Supposed format versatility

Weakness:

Very poor quality control. Defective unit! Awful DVD picture.

Like many other users, I had really high hopes for this unit. Previously, I was aware that Apex wasn''t exactly a "high-end" brand name but I was willing to take a chance and order a 7701 from J & R. I wanted to enjoy the 7701''s features and versatility until another universal player came along from a higher-quality brand. My 7701 arrived double-boxed. No cuts, dents, or abrasions on the exterior box. J & R did a great job on the shipping. Opened it up, found the Apex box sealed, looking "new" from the factory. Opened the Apex box, found the manual, all the accessories, etc. Took the Apex out of the plastic wrap: the front plastic indicator screen was cracked! Strangely, the oblong-shape which would''ve fit the cracked gap was missing from the packaging. I can only assume the plastic piece is lying on the factory floor somewhere in China. I read the manual, plugged the unit in and made necessary connections in the back. The Apex title screen looked fine on my older 4:3 TV set. Tried out a SACD (Tower of Power Live), played great. Wonderful sound. Tried an HDCD (Koch Jazz Indo-Jazz), again, sounded fine. Tried a home-burned CD-R of music, again, worked great. Each audio CD sounded fine, and the LED indicator on the front display panel accurately showed which audio format was being handled. Tried a DVD, "A Bugs Life"...the Main Menu appeared, looked fine. Colors looked a little "off", but could''ve been my TV settings. Selected a chapter from the DVD, and what the @#$!? As the movie played, bands of mushy light and dark moved vertically across the screen! I re-checked the connections, tried a different DVD, "Toy Story", and again the same problem! Not only that, intermittent "pops" and dropped audio through the Dolby Digital track! After reading all the mostly negative reviews on this and other sites, I still was willing to give this unit a fair go, but now I''m really annoyed. I will be returning the 7701 tomorrow. I suppose I should''ve listened to that buyer beware instinct. Needless to say, I think Apex has really dropped the ball on this model.

Strength:

Lots of features.

Weakness:

Doesn't do anything wholly right.

You can read the other negative reviews, and I agree with most of them.

Either Apex has the worst Q&A in existance or there is something else going on with this particular unit. Not only did it have problems playing back certain DVD-As, but in DVD-A/SACD disks the unit would "crackle and pop" through the analog audio outputs.

Why quibble? Well, $300 is $300, and if they can't get it right then why bother? Nobody's asking for the quality of a $1000 unit, but at least be able to do what you're advertising the unit to do.

Stay far away.

Price only

Weakness:

Weak on most points

I just got my APEX AD-7701 last Friday January 11th. Couldn't wait to hear the SACD section of this unit. The price was at what I could afford. Didn't realise Sony had there NS500V at the same price. Even found it for sale cheaper at $250. Well with some DVDs I got a snowy picture with horizontal bars running up and down. The Pioneer played them OK. When I played the SACD recording of Copland's "Appalachian Spring" it kept clicking in-between tracks, stopping and starting also. Most of all it is very noisy. One can hear the motor (a kind of pulsing sound) while the disc plays and even when you but the disc on stop. Very disappointing. I contacted APEX by e-mail on Monday Jan 14th! Haven't heard from them. This unit is going back. STAY AWAY FROM IT! >:(

Design.

Weakness:

Everything.

Greetings, I got mine last Friday and installed it yesterday. What a disappointment, this thing is a “L-E-M-O-N.” After installing it on my Denon 2802 and 65 inch RCA Scenium HDTV, while playing Mummy Returns I heard a loud POP sound and my screen just went “grayish-white” and got scared that it might have ruined my TV. Changed the TV source back to my HDTV Channel and it worked. But both the S-Video out and Component Video out from the 7701 were still grayish white. I can not even turn off the 7701 and I have to unplug it to reset it. The picture then was a little too dark and intermittent huge pixels appears when the popping sound is heard. When the popping sound is heard, the center channel output is heard in my Right surround speaker and so is the rest of the sounds.

I am very disappointed with this unit. I have an Apex AD600 for almost a year now with few minor problems (some DVD disks can’t be read) otherwise it works fine. I also have a Sony DVP-S3000 for four years now and it still works great. But with this new 7701, Apex bungled it and it changed my perspective to their company. I am now looking into returning the unit and just buy a JVC or Panasonic with Progressive scan.
