The Cambridge 540D is an A/V winner in all all respects. Using the latest Crystal CS4360 192/khz dac(also featured in the new $$$ Naim DVD5) it is at home spinning CDs & DVD-Audio Discs. Sonics abound with excellent transparency & dynamics... Many DVD players lose sight when playing cds but not the 540D which never brings out listener fatigue. DVD-Audio discs Sound Incredible & better Far Costly Machines... Also a winner in the DVD-Video world with it's superb picture quality & grain free presentation, excellent build quality & ergonomic design. At $379 dollar retail there is no better in it's class... !

Strength:

Superb Picture, Excellent musicality, Well constructed, Excellent Remote, Great as a CD Player

Weakness:

None

The Cambridge Audio 540D is an amazing value. The first thing you will notice is the substantial construction. This is the first audio component under $1000 that felt like you were purchasing something substantial. On Video play, the 540 is excellent. I tried the Denon 2200 and the NAD 533 and the Cambridge is noticably better than the NAD and on par with the 2200. Video is exceptionally clear and has a 3D effect normally seen on much more expensive players. Audio quality is probably the strongest attribute. CD sound is better than most sub $300 CD players and DVD Audio quality is nothing short of stunning. As I only have Super Audio CD to compare to, I am able to say the the 540 excels over my Sony SACD player quite well. Usability and features are another area of note. The remote is great. The best I have ever used. The unit is also easy to use and setup. Overall, I think this is the best DVD player under $1000 where audio performance is a key criteria.
