Strength:

audio quality on regularly CD,s for a DVD player was Unbelievable

Weakness:

Remote,lip sync problems

I purchased this along with the Denon AVR2801 Receiver. I did experience lip sync problems on a couple of DVD's in particular Gladiator. But the audio quality on regularly CD,s for a DVD player was Unbelievable. But i still took it back and tired a Sony DVPS360 (anyone thinking of buying this sony dvd forget it a real piece of JUNK)and a Toshiba SD2200. Well to cut it short I have the Denon DVD1000 back and happy i got it back it's and outstanding product.

Footnote: Denon has told my dealer that there will be a chip update soon for the DVD1000 to correct the lip sync problems

Weakness:

Lip Synch

Just to clarify, I bought the Denon DVP 1500, the 1000 replaced the 1500. I returned the 1500 and opted not to go with the 1000. Instead I bought the Sony DVP S-7700. The Denon 1500 had horrible lip synch prob's and supposedly, there was a chip upgrade. Then, they replaced it with the 1000 instead, supposedly fixing all the prob's the 1500 had. I am disappointed that all of you Denon DVP1000 owners are having this problem. I really like Denon, I own the AVR3300 and love it, but their DVD players, on the low end, kinda suck. I say step up to their 2500 model or higher, or go buy another brand...Sorry Denon.

Strength:

Quality Build - Lots of output options - Plays CDR burns well!

Weakness:

Remote - Remote - Remote (did I mention the remote?)

After reading all the reviews, I have to agree that the Denon 1000 I first purchased suffered severe lipsynch problems! I bought the display model at Sears for $200 (they knocked another 20 bucks off when I showed them all the glowing reviews I found on this website) and was gonna return it, when I checked another Sears location and found they had one left that was still new in the box!

Well I'm happy to report the replacement unit works flawlessly (unlike it's predecessor) and the beauty of it all is I still paid the close out price for the display (he he he)

The picture & audio quality are superb for it's entry level price tag - and it plays my CD burns very nicely, as well!

I guess my only true complaint (since I was able to trade up my lemon) is the remote! It takes about 20 pounds psi of pressure to get the miniature buttons to engage! and they seem to have been arranged by someone with Altshimers Disease! But I guess considering the deal I got - I can live with this annoying inconvenience....

Strength:

Excellent audio and video quality

Weakness:

Somewhat lengthy loading process

This unit replaced my Toshiba which is about 3 years old. I did a lot of comparing between DVD players priced from about $250 to $500 and found that based on pure performance, I just couldn't beat the Denon for the price.

The store I bought it from is a furniture/applicance/home electronics superstore and quite honestly didn't know anything about the unit. In fact, the salesman kept trying to steer me toward $150 JVC and RCA units when I saw the Denon sitting down at the end of about 60 DVD players. Since I already have the AVR-3801 receiver (another amazing piece of work from Denon), I decided to grab the DVD-1000 since the store had a no-questions-asked return policy.

My search was definitely over. The audio is quite crisp through my Snell E fronts, B&W 601 center and surrounds and Infinity sub system. The video is equally sharp, even through S-Video on my Toshiba 50" rear projection TV. I haven't experienced even a hint of the sync problem that others have described. I have to admit that I was concerned with that, but either this unit is an exception or else Denon has corrected the problem.

The remote isn't anything to write home about, but I use a Marantz remote, so I won't knock Denon for that.

Overall, I'm very happy that I bought the DVD-1000.

Strength:

DENON name, quality, simplicity, price, audio and video is great.

Finally got around to including my review here. I was reluctant to test drive this model but had to see what all the hype about audio/video tracking error was all about. I
brought two DVD-100's home bought from two different dealers and put them to the test with some of the DVD titles mentioned here that supposedly gave this DENON fits.
NO PROBLEMS detected by myself or any of our freinds.
Must be luck I guess or maybe the units have been corrected as many, many manufacturers have been upgrading the original releases of product. Thankyou for all of you Beta testers for leading me to this fine DENON product.
If I could change just one thing with this player it would be the remote as it is quite small, but I have a master programmable remote for my HT system that easily replaced this so it is of no real concern to me. Back to my igloo for more dynomite couch potatoing1

Strength:

Build quality, sharp picture.

Weakness:

Lip Sync, Noise while playing, Very Basic.

This was my third DVD player, as I have a Denon amp I decided to buy a matching player. The first thing I noticed was when playing a DVD the noise the player made, very annoying on quiet bits of a film. Then it wouldn't play Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition properly it kept skipping and pausing etc.
My main reason for upgrading was the poor lip sync on my Pioneer player; it was just as bad on the Denon.
So I exchanged it for an ex-display 2500 model, which has the internals of a Panasonic 360 player. I cannot fault this player, no lip sync probs and would highly recommend it if you can still find one for sale!!.

Strength:

Dependability and extremely low out of the box problem rating.

Weakness:

None worth mentioning other than small target size of buttons on rem control

Had the chance to evaluate 5 brand new out of the box units at my neighbors HT test lab. John has been in the home theater installation business for the past 10 years and is well known in the state for his knowledge and abilities at designing and setting up low tech to hi-tech home theater systems. To make the test a bit more of a challange, he incorporated 2 other units which had known and proven inabilities at properly synchronizing audio to video. I will disclose the two "brand X" units later. John provided my with access to his multi channel switcher allowing me to choose the input DVD source channels in an attempt to discern for myself which units exhibited lip synch problems.
The test DVD which we used was a Gladiator 2000 disc.
After regular play, chapter search, fast fwd, and jog reverse viewing I was only able to detect 1 unit that had an obvious delay which to my perception was less than half a second. Another signal channel appeared to have a slightly lower delay which was only noticable after multiple chapter searches and reverse jog operations. John agreed with my opinions at which point he asked me to enter his test room behind his video wall to see the offending machines. I noticed that ther were indeed 5 Denon DVD-1000's
but also noticed a sixth. It was obvious that one of the units with perceived lip synch problems was a Denon but what was not so obvious as he showed me was that the offending unit was in fact one of the first units produced by Denon. None of his installations incorporating the DVD-1000, and he has set up 26 of these, have had synch problems. The five new units tested from new, factory sealed boxes, tracked flawlessly. Note that unlike some in the industry, John confirms the proper operation of all of his stock prior to sale and in-home setup. This is time consuming but as a purchaser spend hard earned money, it's a great assurance of quality and piece of mind.
The Denon unit ranks high on his list of customer satisfaction. It is now on my list and prominently located in my video room. You may be wondering about the other flawed unit. It was a Sony DVP-S360. John has a very high failure rate with this model as his stack of RMA's from Sony atest.

Weakness:

Slight lip-sync problem

Even though I didn't notice a very bad lip-sync delay problem, I did notice one. Most average consumers might not pick up on this but after you know to look for it, it is there. I played both Gladiator and Preditor and noticed it on both. I did seem to very from slight to almost none when I jumped chapters. I'm bring mine back tomorrow. Like I said, most people wouldn't notice it in regular everyday use, but I did.

Strength:

Fantastic picture quality and great sound. Really well put together and even my wife could easily use it.

Weakness:

None

loved this unit right out of the box. Easy operation and even though the remote control is a bit small with possible the need for a bit larger buttons, it is well laid out and easy to use. Love the quality of sound and picture quality.
Excellent DVD player with some of the best sync compared to Sony and Toshiba we tried as well. Plays DVD's that the other units locked up on such as Gladiator and Dinosaur.
It may not be as fast loading as some other units but a DVD
player doesn't have to instantly play in my mind. Ease of use, quality of build, excellent sound and video playback from excellent sources are the main requirements and this unit does these VERY well. Highly recommended.

Strength:

good picture quality

Weakness:

Synch problems - unacceptable

I've been looking for a high-end DVD player to replace my Toshiba SD-4109x which produces excellent video and audio quality when it's working, but has broken down 3 times in the 18 months I've had it.

I bought the Denon because Denon is the highest-end nameplate in consumer-grade home theater, and I love the AVR 2801 receiver.

Got it home last night, and it has the same synch problems described by everyone else here. It's going back tonight.

This really shakes my confidence in Denon - that they could release a $400 single-disc player that has this common, simple, and easily detectable flaw.

I've been a real Denon bigot since I started using their audio products, but I don't think I could recommend a company that allows this kind of shoddy workmanship to hit the market. Shame, shame.
