Strength:

Good picture. CD sound rivals my 1560 Denon player (800.00)

Weakness:

none

I Purchased (as refurb) from a popular bid site on 8/30/2000. I purchased my first Denon product in the late 80`s. Denon has always been about HI-FI performance/price. I`m Concerned about Denon`s countinued quality. As a Prof. Installer of home theatre components Denon has been my most recommended brand of components. My clients have nothing to say but thank you. No company has a 0 defect reputation and at this point in time I still beleive Denon to be true to it`s heritage. I`ve bought several Denon refurb components and every single one has not always performed as it should but has has come out of the box in mint condition without any scratches or flaws. That only suggests to me their countinued Quality.

Strength:

ease of use, good clean style. Produces a good clean picture.

Weakness:

will not play some DVD's

Overall I am not real happy with this DVD player. Out of the last 15 dvd's it has had a problem playing three of them.
The Patriot, Girl interrupted and one other. Each time it would go straight to the special feature menu, and no matter what I did it would not play. I might expect this out of a $199.00 player, but not out of a $500. I plan on buying a diffrent unit.

Strength:

Style, quite operation, fast tracking/searching

Weakness:

Loading disc is slow at the beginning.

Got this from The Good Guys as an open box merchandise. This DVD player matches mine Denon AVR-5700, so this is one of my main reason to get it. Also, the salesman gave me a deal of the century for this puppy! $199 out-the-door with 3 years extended warranty.
First hook-up was easy and straight forward. Gotta set-up the audio output through the menu so that you can get sound from either optical or coaxial cable. Picture is very nice and track skipping/searching is extremely fast. The only draw back that I see so far is the initial loading of the disk is slow (slower than the Sony). DTS is unbelievable especially when decoding through THX surround. Rob Thomas in the Santana Supernatural LIVE album never sounded so "loud and clear!"

Despite of the low score this machine has so far, I still give it two thumbs up. With three years extended warrantee, I'll be OK for a while...

Strength:

When it plays dvd's or cd's it performs up to what you would expect from a mid-high end dvd player.

Weakness:

remote is very weak in many areas. It refuses to play many of the new releases on dvd!

This unit has a problem. Denon needs to issue a recall and fix it. When I purchased this unit in July I thought I had purchased a fairly high end product from well respected company. I was at first very pleased with this unit, and was happy with the way it performed playing both dvd's and cd's, and then the problems started.
At first I thought it was my copies of dvd's, it would every now and then hiccup on The Matrix, I wasnt worried yet. Then came Independance Day, it would keep jumping back from the middle of a chapter to the begining, I still wasnt very worried about it yet. Then came Girl Interupted, heck it didnt even make it past the main menu, at this point I was begining to worry. Then I purchased the Patriot, again it refused to go beyond the main menu. Now I was getting pissed off. I would expect this bad behavior from a low end dvd player that you might pick up for $150.00 But not from a $500.00 Denon!! I called the store from whom I purchased the unit, and they told me I had a tracking problem.I told them that would be the case if it was happening on more dvd's and during the movies. They then had me bring in some movies to try on a brand new unit. Well guess what, they didnt work on the new 1500 either, still not wanting to believe a foolish customer like myself, they loaded the Patriot onto a few other machines and guess what happened.. It loaded up perfectly!!
They then agreed that this unit had a problem and gave me credit towards a new player. I tried several new players and went back to Denon again this time for the 3700, the new Denon is working GREAT (so far) and is a better unit all around. And having only spent $649.00 on it it still was a good deal. Until Denon fixes the problem with the 1500 I wouldnt recommend it.
