this is an amendment to the previous review i gave...i like everyone else cannot play "stuart little" on this player..its a bummer...but its the ONLY title I've come across that wont play. Also i have had a little bit of the lip sync thing but its very slight and very rare and can easily be fixed by simply pausing and unpausing the disc.

Auditioned this player next to one of the new Sony DVD players (560D) last weekend. Now, just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm one of those people who still digs a Linn Table up front and 2-channel gear from companies like Linn, Naim, Arcam, and ProAc. The salesjerk was "letting me" (wow thanks!) compare these players through a Theta Casablanca (ridiculous huge flashing unit that he spent 15 min playing with the settings on) and some big-ass pair of Paradigm Studio mega blasters. For audio purposes, he threw in the audiophile approved Keb Mo CD. The salesjerk was trying so hard to convince me that there was a "wow... huge ... unbelievable" difference between the audio sound of the $500 Denon vs $300 Sony. Guess what, while the Denon had higher output, the sound, at matched levels, was just about the same, and the Sony has better video processing. Now, I know that the sorry Theta/Paradigm combo didn't help things, but in my humble opinion, the differences between most current DVD and CD-only units playing 16/44 CD's, are pretty darn minor. Its a flawed format - they all sound faily poor or average. If you want "wow..huge" differences, you have to be switching between 16-bit CD's and SACD, or a good analog setup.

Just had to get that off my chest.

Despite the fact that the Denon weighs a little more, I just don't think it can compete with players from Sony, Toshiba, and Pioneer on performance/$. Its not a bad unit, its just not the best value.

Everything except sound quality

This unit worked fine for a couple of months, then the picture went bad. It is distorted, almost like looking at a negative of the picture with blotches of color here and there(unwatchable). It does this with any DVD and on any TV I hook it up to. The unit switches back and forth from working fine to the distorted picture right in the middle of playback. I also has lip-sync problems. I mailed it to Denon for the e-prom upgrade. When I got it back, it worked for ten minutes, then the picture went bad again. I talked to a Denon technician this morning for a little while. He would not give me a replacement and wanted me to send it in again, but I know the exact same thing will happen - they will see the picture working for a second, think they fixed it, then ship it back to me. To say the least, Denon customer service is terrible. This technician(at their Calif. base) also started telling me that there has not been any reported problems with the DVD-1500 and that it has not been discontinued (lies). I talked to the lady at their New Jersey base that answers the phones and she said the unit was discontinued and then she transferred me to the other guy. I don't know what to do now. Denon will never get my business again.
In summary, you should believe all the bad reviews here and not get a DVD-1500. Denon does not seem to care about solving this problem.

audio/video sync problem is unbelievably bad.

I only discovered audioreview.com about two months ago, so I was unsure of how reliable these reviews are.

I was truly worried by the horrendous reviews of the Denon DVD-1500, but decided to suck it up and buy one at a cheapo online auction house (uBid) and see if I had the same problems. Please, don't make the mistake I made and disregard these reviews.

The denon1500 looked very good when I unpacked it, and audio CDs sounded awesome compared to my 5 year old denon CD player. I've always liked denon for CD players etc. and have steered away from them on receivers where I find that Harmon Kardon, Carver and others tend to outdiustance denon.

But anyway, after listening to a few CDs (and some CD-Rs to verify that it played those too) I moved into my DVD library. Almost immediately I was struck by the Audio/Video sync problem that has been discussed here ad nauseum. I couldn't believe it. Now some poeple that I showed it to didn't think it was that bad, but the video is CLEARLY about .25 seconds in front of the audio track. Just watch car doors slamming, gavels banging, or anything that has a crisp sound and you'll notice the delay. At first this didn't bother me (maybe it was only one or two movies?), but as I went through twenty DVDs, it became apparent that every single one had audio/video sync issues.

I also went to a local audio store and had them test my DVDs and some of theirs on three of the denon1500s they had in stock. Every one had the same problem. The salespeople were dumbfounded, and remarked that the unit seemed to be fine for many people. That may be, but once you notice this problem, it really begins to irk you. And well it should. The reason we've moved up to DVD is the clearer picture and delicious audio, and if they're out of sync I might as well be using an old one-head VCR and watching a 13" black and white television.

Denon owes it to its' own reputation to recall this player. I am returning mine, and caution you NOT TO CONSIDER THIS PLAYER, or if you are considering it - PLEASE GO SEE IT BEFORE YOU BUY. My loss should at least be your gain.

I know that some will feel I am being to harsh in giving this player a one star rating, but I ask you: if a DVD player can't play DVDs correctly, what would you give it?

Strength:

Robust, nice looks, sound (DVD, CD)

Weakness:

Lip synch after pause, digital "noise" in certain backgrounds (dark white, grey or brown)

I really like my new Denon aside from two problems:

1) If you use the pause button and then resume, there is a slight sound synch prob. Stopped and restarted the movie and all was OK.

2) Pulsating and "square" video distorsions (digital "noise") in dark, one-colored backgrounds f.ex. walls and ceilings.

My dealer told me that these problems will disappear after he changes a chip. The rating is based on the fact that these problems disappear.

Great sound!

Strength:

It Plays CD-R

Weakness:

1)It does not Recognize CD-RW
2)It does not Recognize Audio CD and CD-R if you put in the CD the "Compact Disk Scratch Protection" layer, otherwized known as "Data Protect" layer (From Buterfly Pacific).

I have purchased this in the Middle of December 2000 for 390 Cyprus Pounds. I do not know how much was that in dollars that day.
I was in between Nakamicci DVD-10s and Denon DVD 1500.
I decited to purchase the Denon due to the SCART OUT that the Nacamicci does not have. The Price was the same for both models, 390 Cyprus Pounds.

I mentioned the bad comments of this site to the technician of Denon (that is also a good friend of mine), and he told me that none of this problems exists in the 1500 models now because the factory eliminated those problems replacing some chips insite with new versions in the new production of the 1500, making now this model "a new generation model".
He also noted to me that I will not have any problem with this new model.
When I ask him if he warranty me that in the future this machine will play the all the DVD movies, he said
"Maybe it may not be able to play some future DVD movies in the future, but this may happen in any brand of DVD player, no-one knows what may happen in the future..."

Well, since he is my friend, I believed him, and I purchased Denon 1500.
And you know what? He told me the truth.

I read in this site that to use the remote control you have to place it directly to the device. In my situation, if you point it anywhere in the room, It works.
I also read that there is some lip sinchronization fault in some DVD's, however I did not see any yet (or I did not noticed it, anyway). I hope that I will not see any in the future too..

Some DVD's It plays them better than other devices. For Example the "Toy Story 2" of Disney Region 2, My computer Player can not play all the movie, it stucks in between, and in the Akai DVD Player (I do not remember the model) It can not show the Menu, or the advertisements in that DVD Movie. But Denon it plays it Perfectly.
Also the "M.I.B Special Edition Region 2" my Computer can not play it correctly, but in Denon 1500 is O.K.

In other words I did not find any fault in this machine yet.

I give this machine 5 stars because I thing It really worth it.

However I have noticed that if you put an audio CD that you put have fixed-in the "DataProtect" Layer created by "ButerFly Pacific", this device will not be able to understant the Audio CD, and you will see a message "No Play" in your screen.
For me This is very important, but since a lot of players do not understant this type of CD Scratch protection, I did not consiter it very bad for this machine. However I hope that this will not be as it is now in future versions of this machine.
Please note that my Denon Audio Device DCD-960 can recognize that layer, so I play my audio cd's (fixed with that layer) with DCD-960....

If you want to buy DENON 1500, be sure to be the latest version, not an old version, otherwise you will have the problems that other people have found in this site.

Thank you for your time reading this.

Please note that I have connected this machine also with a device called "Aver TVGenie" from AverMedia ,and I can also see the DVD Movies from the Computer Monitor (That happens to be EIZO 17 Inch).

Please also note that you should not buy an EIZO computer monitor. I do not recomend it. Mine it Burned Twice within the first Year that I have purchased it. They are very sensitive with electricity. But If you want to buy an EIZO Monitor, Buy first a UPS for that, otherwize you have 95% chance to be burned at least twice within the first year that you will buy it.
This is a friendly advice to you people......

Strength:

Beautiful unit; mates well with Denon A/V tuners; good plug layout on back; excellent picture quality

Weakness:

WRETCHED audio/video synch problems, not cured by new EPROM; toy remote

I purchased this unit in September 2000 for my first home theatre setup. However, it has continued to disappoint from day one.

There were audio synch problems which have been noted by many folks here, with the audio noticeably trailing the video. I took the unit back to Magnolia, who were kind enough to take care of returning it to Denon for an EPROM replacement. Unfortunately, the problem still exists but less frequently -- along with the pause / resume problems, there are ongoing synch issues that mean you must stop the playback then resume it to re-synch the audio. This unit is going back today and I'll see about getting a kindler, gentler unit. It's sad to see such a nice-looking unit from a reputable company have so many problems like this.

Additional: the "loaner" unit I got from Magnolia was the DVD-1000, which *also* had the same synch problems, so this appears to be endemic to low / middle-tier Denon products.
