Strength:

GREAT AUDIO AND VIDEO PERFORMANCE! solid build, and easy set-up. PLAYS CDRs!!! Fast search and seek features.

Weakness:

buttons are a bit on the smallish side but overall remote is easy to use and can easily be controlled by a universal remote.

I ve had no problems with lip synch on this unit...between my roomates and I we have well over 100 dvds plus we rent.
It is true that the unit is a bit slow on the startup...but if you can't wait 5 secs for your unit to turn on ...then buy another unit. But believe me its worth the wait...the audio and picture quality are superb. The tray is super sturdy as is the rest of the unit, you can tell at first glance that denon put alot of attention into this unit.
I paid about 480 for this unit and i think its worth every penny!

Strength:

Mutliregion from Denon, No pause on layer changes, Sound Quality, appearance (i got the gold model).

Weakness:

lyp sync, picturer quality, display

This player was my first, and rather dissapointing. It came out of the box looking very nice indeed, i hooked it up to my tv using the s-video cable which i had to buy (not included in the box) and the analog audio outputs. The player was initially fine but upon sticking Blade into the player and skipping a few chapters i noticed that walls and numerous other areas appeared to pulsate, resulting in a very distracting picture of much lower quality than i expected for the AUS$930 i paid for it. Lyp sync problems were absent until i fast forwarded through a chapter... when i pressed play again the audio was out of sync to the extent anyone would see it, even if they weren't paying a great deal of attention. The problem appeared to be virtually non-existant on columbia-tristar dvd's.
Sound quality was very good and more than met expectation. The display was annoying as when playing dvd's i only had the one display option being full disc time (audio cd's gave track time/time remaining, and disc time/time remaining). The ability to enter a specific time or chapter in the onscreen display and skip to it was very handy but failed to outweigh the inherent picture quality and sound quality problems.
I compared the problem i had with my player on a friends sony dvd525 using the exact same tv and cords and experienced none of the problems that i had on the Denon.
I experienced no pause on layer changes with the denon, unlike the sony which has a very noticeable pause, which was a big bonus, but again, the poor picture quality led to my returning the player a mere 4 days after purchase, which although only a short period, allowed me to get a fairly good idea of the problems the player had. My advice to anyone planning to buy this player is that you will probably find something better for cheaper.
Upon returning the player i was told that no problems had been reported, but upon the 3rd or 4th chapter of outbreak on a 100hz tv (mine is 50hz) the problem was apparent and they agreed to let me have another one. The problem was less severe on their demo (region 4 only) player but i opted for a different player. I now have the Marantz DV-4000 which i received at a heavily discounted price on account of the problems i had with the Denon. My advice, do not buy the DVD-1500, find something else.

Strength:

Great sound. Good picture. Good price.

Weakness:

None so far. I have only had it for week.

I reluctently purchased the denon 1500 last week. It was a open box item for $280. I figured that I would take a shot and hope I got one of the good ones. Have not had any of the problems that were metioned in the previous reviews. I rented "Girl Interrupted" and it played flawlessly. No problems with the other five movies I have tried either. I plan on trying some of the other problem dvd's (Patriot,T2)but I am very pleased with what I have seen so far. Much quieter than the Toshiba, sony and pioneer. Looks great. Sounds great. Thanks for the help Micheal and all the other reviews. Denon is usually a great product I hope they have this problem fixed for future models.

Weakness:

Remote

This is my first DVD player. I was looking at the Toshiba and Sony models. I strayed from Sony because of lip sync issues. In the past, I have had good luck with the denon line. Right off the boat, lip sync problem on Crimson Tide and 2010 Space Odyssey. I plan on trying more DVD's that reportedly have lip sync issues on most players. The remote could be better. As the above reviewer mentioned, Denon has included a lot of remote functions on the front of the unit. The picture is great. I wish the remote were better and I hope I do not find very many sync issues.

Weakness:

Video is not clear when background is dark, especially it is in amber and black, loading is very slow

Proudly owner of Denon 2800. I bought this product because of Denon's reputation. The first month I used it as a cd player and didn't watch enough moview to find out video quality. Lately I read some suggestion in Hometheater forum in Techtalk and some of this product owner mention about video problem and lipsynce problem. Since I watched a lot more dvd and find out that video is not very clear when the background of the movie is dark. Like in Army of Dakness I can see horizontal and vertical lines on the screen. Thought it was TV so I hook it up with different TV and same thing happen. Still not convince so I played the movie with Pan. Dvd-310 (get poor rating on this site) and the video is much more clearer. Now, I am convinced that Denon dvd has a problem. Too bad I can't return or exchange because 30 days already past. (any movie with dark background I can see the lines, even in Analys THis when Deniro and his guards walk out of hospital and wearing black suits, I can see the lines on the suit too, that's bad, and any scenes in Matrix with black background)

With 400 US I expect more from this player....I would not recommend this product to anyone. First, it has problem with video and lipsynce (as other review already stated). Second, the new technology will coming out soon (dvd-a), as soon as this summer, especially universal player. So if anyone wants to buy dvd player now, don't spend too much money on it because new tech. will on the market soon.

2 stars for value: no build in decoder (I use receiver decoder anyway) and has problem. For 400 I don't wanr any problems.

3 stars overall because of the problem, hopefully Denon reputation still with this player.
Note: this player's audio is excellent

Strength:

Audio section, looks great!

Weakness:

Lip sync problem, PCFriendly problem

I just returned a DVD-1500 after one week. Stuart Little, which contains PC Friendly technology in both widescreen and full screen retail versions, would not play. I took the dvd's to the Denon dealer and it played in every other brand/model they had. I spoke with Denon customer service-no solutions available from them.
I was thinking I could live with this until I saw the list of PC Friendly dvd's. I also saw a glaring lip sync problem halfway through two other dvd's.
I have since purchased a Sony DVP-550D (making certain the serial number and firmware were within the acceptable ranges listed in other reviews on this site) and have not seen any of the problems with this unit.
It's a shame that the Denon product did not perform well-it is a very attractive piece of equipment.

Strength:

Speed, flexability, features, CD-R support.

Weakness:

Initial release quality/concerns

OK, After seeing all the flux I have to respond here....
I have been a Denon user for more than 18 years(all purchased throught the same great local store) and I am thoroughly pleased with the 1500. No lip sync isues, chapter selection is absolutely the fastest I have seen so far and the features are a great bargain for the price. Load and "power-up" time are slower than most units I've looked at however.

After many discussions with my dealer and others on this I think that Denon may have had a transport issue in some of the initial shipments(many units were replaced I've learned) and this has been associated to the root cause for slow performance and lip sync according to most of the periodicals/magazine/web documents I've found which, BTW, usually list the Sony's as the worst(no experence from me on this).

And, as we all know, Denon spends more on circuitry than they do on their remotes so yes they are poor in this respect. I have a Pronto that I use for all my components so remotes are not issues for me. I find the manuals more humorous than informative since they are pretty much direct translations from their Japanese versions.

Overall the 1500 is the best buy for the money I've found. Having the ability to play my "mixed" CD-R's again on my primary HT setup is even better than the price. For the record I own(have owned by Denon): 3 PMA int. amps, 1 tuner, 1 AVR receiver, 2 AVR HT receivers, 2 CD players, and 2 DVD players and I have NEVER experienced a problem with any of these components.

I rate the 1500 as a 4.5 for both value and overall(because very rarely do I think something is a "true 5") but will skew upwards here because of the excellent Denon quality I have experienced to date - including the 1500.

Primary HT Main Components:
Denon AVR-3300
Denon DVD-1500
Panasonic 32" SuperFlat w/ 3D and PIP
RCA DolbyD Satellite Rec
Sony ES tape
Hitatchi SVHS HiFi VCR
B&W CDM7-SE front L&R
Boston Acoustics Center, VRS surround

Strength:

easy to use, plays 96k/24bit music

Weakness:

power doesn't come on as quickly as I think it should

This is my first DVD player to own and so far I'm impressed with it. The size of the buttons on the remote don't seem to bug me near as much as some people although they could have been larger, no doubt. One thing that does bug me slightly is that when you press the power button it seems to take longer for the power to come on than it should. I think I've actually turned it off/on a couple of times because I didn't think I had turned it on yet! Overall, I'm very happy with it.
