Strength:

Solid construction and great audio as expected from Denon.

Weakness:

Very obvious color distortion through many movies. Many blurred pixels throughout Dogma, Saving Private Ryan, as mentioned prior, my daughters Stewart Little would not play on the DVD-1500. Very slow loading.

I tried to ignore all the opinions and negative feedback that the DVD1500 was getting. I asked my local dealer about these issues with the lip-sync problems and he said he has only had positive feedback so I took it home. The very first DVD I put on has already scared me. I put on Flawless with Deniro. The video and audio were obviously not on the same page, major lip-sync issue. I then thought to myself the guys with positive feedback are probably first time DVD owners. I've seen low end machines out perform this unit. I am a huge believer in Denon, I have the AVR2800 and nothing in the $ range can touch what it is capable of. I think I have a good ear, I just hope Denon attacks this issue and takes this model out of production and starts from scratch. So, where do I go from here? I'm looking at the Yamaha DVD-S795 as well as the DVD-C900 DVD 5 disc changer. I have even considered the new Sony DVP560D. So, guys give me your input, where do we go from here? Please email me with your input on what you would buy at this point in the game at budman250@hotmail.com

Strength:

uhhhh audio and build quality

Weakness:

lip sync problems...DVDs skip tracks...incompatibilty issues

you can all send me hate mail for reccomending this product...this turned into a real disaster the more I watched movies again and again the more i noticed the lip sync thing popping up...the pause un-pause thing would work sometimes...but then the audio would get out of sync again later in THE SAME MOVIE. Usually the only way to remedy this would be to turn the player off and back on again. UGH irritating to say the least. Also a new little fiend creeped up. Occasionally it would just decide to skip chapters on DVD certain DVD titles (not scratched one new ones out of the box) while this may have been due to a bad unit...I returned it anyway and purchased a Toshiba instead and have had no problems. I'm very dissapointed in this unit, Denon has always made top notch products...this is really a bad thing for them since their brand name is sunonomous with so many good pieces of equipment. I hope Denon does somthing to correct this glarring problem. The only highlight to this player was the audio quality on Cds which was quite good....and the S-video out was very nice too. ITs too damn bad they can both work together on DVDs.
Again sorry about before I think my opinion before was clouded by buyers remouse.

Strength:

SVIDEO, Supports CD-R,

Weakness:

Very long disc load time (5-10sec for CD, 10-45sec for DVD), bad error correction, can't play Johny Mnemonic

I wanted a DD/DTS receiver to enhance the sound experiance of my PC based DVD solution. At the same time I wanted a matching DVD player to take away some of the overhead of playing DVD's on a PC (boot time, no remote control, noise). I decided for Denon AVR-2800 and DVD-15000 based on perceived quality and features. Set costed EUR 1380,-.

Till now I am happy with the Denon AVR-2800 DD/DTS receiver. The DVD-1500 however is a pain.

Its seems that you need to store your DVD in a 'clean-room'. Any piece of dust or fingerprint will prevent the DVD-1500 from loading the disk. It takes exactly 50sec for the player to give up and show 00:00 in the display. Read errors during play are even worse. It just freezes the picture, not possible to skip backwards/forwards. Not funny if you are enjoying a movie.

Of the 25 DVD's, 8 did not load before cleaning. Same disks played ok on PC. Some disks took 40 seconds for 'loading' compared to about 65 seconds play on PC (cold start after hibernate). Even audio CD's take 6-7 seconds for the unit to start playing.

On top of this it won't play Johny Mnemonic (code 2). It simply loops in the title menu. Assume this is a software bug.

Based on the picture quality of the DVD's I was able to watch I give it a 3 star value rating. Overall the pain is high but disk cleaning might take away some of it so 2 stars. Still considering to return it and invest the refund in my PC (remote control, silent power supply, etc).

Strength:

picture quality, build quality, and most of all, sound quality

Weakness:

lip-synch, remote has very small buttons

I have not had the extensive lip-synch problems other owners have reported. I have, however, experienced the issue on about one out of every ten or so DVD's, which prevents me from giving this unit the highest possible rating.

What this player offers (assuming you get a unit which does not have overwhelming lip synch issues) is a solidly built player with very good video quality (just a few artifacts on diagonal lines, and occasional pixelation on older DVD's) and outstanding sound quality. The Denon is not a match for a more expensive stand-alone DAC (my choice is a Meridian 566), but is surprisingly close and *much* better than any other DVD player I've listened to in its price range. I've spent some time listening to CD's on it through my system and continue to use it regularly for 24/96 DVD's as well as for CD's when driving a pair of good headphones. The sound is well-balanced and fairly detailed from the bass up through the midrange, if a bit laid back and lacking in sparkle in the highs. This is much easier to live with than the tilted-up and grainy presentation of the competitors I've had a chance to listen to. In fact, it's better than a Pioneer DV-05 in the sound quality department. It also makes a great transport, and has replaced my CAL Delta.

My recommendation would be to give the product a shot if you are interested in buying a DVD player that can also double as a very good CD player. However, given what I've read here and my own experience with lip-synch issues, you'd want to try it before you buy it.

I've always thought highly of Denon, but my DVD-1500 is a piece of junk. I'm returning it this afternoon!

The worst problem I encountered was the skipping. Sometimes the player would skip near the end of a chapter. At first I thought it was the disc. But I've had it happen consistantly with 3 brand new DVDs. The problem seems to occur at the end of one chapter and during the transition to the next chapter. The player sometimes misses the chapter change and skips back to the beginning of the previous chapter. This is completely unacceptable - especially from a manufacturer with Denon's reputation!

Last night while watching a fresh-out-of-the-box copy of Independence Day I found one section that just wouldn't play. The player skipped the first 7 seconds of the chapter. I could rewind past that spot and the player would skip right over it during play.

Like many others in this forum, I noticed the lip synching problem too. At first I thought it was the wine, but I watched carefully and something is definately amiss.

Have you tried to talk to an actual human at Denon? Good luck! I had zero sucess getting customer service.

My recommendation: Don't even think of purchasing a DVD-1500!

Weakness:

Audio Sync problem

I love Denon products. However, the DVD-1500 is forcing me to rethink my position. Out of 6 DVDs tried in this player, 6 showed varying levels of the audio sync problem. Didn't anyone at Denon QA this model before shipping it to the public?

VCD & CD-R (audio and vcd) Playback without problems, still havent tried CD-RW. CD-Audio Discs play with very good sound

Weakness:

Some problems with lipsync, pulsating colours, some titles not working

Sofar my experience of this model has been more good than bad.
Me and a friend is hard testing this drive, we both own one.
And the retailer for sweden supports our testings and are notified on all ups and downs, and other thougts.
A software update for the Drive has been promised to us in less than a month.
In any case we're pretty covered, by law wew have earranty for 2 years, first year without obligation to prove that the error was there from the purchase, the second with that demand, and well, the retailer already knows that we had the problems from the start, and we have extra warranty from that retailer, 5 years.
So if nothings improved by later this fall, theres alot of other models to select from. Like Nad and Metz.

PC DVD drive inside player, no hardware DVD decoding

It is a low-budget drive in a box pretending higher level of quality. I am a sevice techinican. After opening the box I was very dissapointed what I've seen inside. Far below the 'D' standard. It takes exceptionally long for this machine to read a DVD / CD. This player should carry the name of Apex / Shinco but not Denon. Misunderstanding. Don't buy it.

Sync, slow remote and very loud spinning noise

This player did not play some of my DVD:s and it did not want CD-R:s. Audio-Video sync is poor. Denon says that a software update is on the way but that will not fix the loud spinning noise and the slow remote. Bad player! Do not buy! The Marantz DV-4100 is quiet, has better picture, better remote and is bug free! (And for you people from SWEDEN, it is 100$ cheaper)
