Strength:

excellent cd sound; world-class dvd picture; flawless operation; magnificent tank-like build quality; component video

Weakness:

pedestrian, non-backlighted remote

I was originally going to buy a cheap dedicated dvd player and a separate cd player for my system, which is heavily 2-channel audiophile oriented. After reading a rave review in Stereophile Guide to Home Theater concerning this piece's excellent 2-channel cd sound, I decided to give it a try (frankly not expecting much). I have a world-class, 2-channel audiophile-grade system (with some perhaps surprising components listed below)...and I was shocked at how good this thing sounds as a cd player! Air, palpable imaging, bass, shimmering highs--this machine is an excellent cd player that is fully competitive with single play cd players at more than double the price. HDCD's sound even better (since this machine can decode them). The law of diminishing returns comes into play with this machine in a big way: You'd have to move up to $2,000+ to get significantly better cd sound. You decide if that makes sense in the era of the dac/upsamplers (I later added the Bel Canto DAC 1--a world-class product), and considering the possibility that the cd format may or may not be superceded by one of the new dueling formats.

Now add in the fact that this thing plays 5 cd's, has HDCD, flawless operation, tank-like build quality, and just so happens to be a world-class dvd video player (absolutely breath-taking using the component video ouptput into my world-class Toshiba TW40X81 projection tv) and this thing is a %$#@!& steal! Needless to say, this is a genuine 5-star product.

My system:
Adcom GFP-750 preamp
Bel Canto Design DAC 1 upsampler
Enlightened Audio Designs PowerMaster 1000
Denon 4800 (surround sound processing+rear channel amps)
Magnepan 1.6/MGCC/10.1 speakers
Rel Storm III sub

sound quality, number of outputs, build quality, flexible remote, hdcd filter

Weakness:

none so far

I wanted a DVD player that would replace my 10 year old yamaha CD player.Yes, you can get good DVD changers for less money, but the Denon's combination of 96/24 digital output, hdcd filter, and overall flexibility make it a real winner in my opinion. Picture quality is as good as any I've seen.If your interested in a unit that lets you watch movies with excellent picture quality(I'm using the composite output)and allows you to listen to your CD collection the way they should be heard; then give this unit an audition.

I am going to make my review short and not bore you death on what stereo rack I am using. I am not going to tell you what kind of headphones I am using either, because these have nothing to do with the performance of the DVD (maybe the headphones.... slightly). All I can say is I've had this DVD for about a month and it has performed flawlessly. The video output is gorgeous, and the audio is absolutely superb. I compared the audio quality with the Toshiba 5109 and difference is night and day. The Denon simply beat the Toshiba on audio performance hands down. On the video performance however, I like the Toshiba due to its progressive scan capability.

Excellent CD sound quality and processing, Plays HDCD, Video quality, Build quality

Weakness:

Poor remote for such a magnificent piece of equipment

I've been slowly building my Home Theater system one piece at a time which centers around my Denon receiver. I was looking for a DVD player to replace my Panasonic A-310 which I moved to the kids TV room. I was looking to buy a single disc DVD player and a five disc CD player. I purchased a Denon DVD-1000 and returned it after only two weeks due to a terrible lip-sync problem. After a lot of consideration and reading a lot of reviews, I purchased this Denon DVM-3700. It was the best money I have ever spent on a piece of electronic equipment. The two-channel CD sound is phenomenal. Even my wife could hear a significant difference immediately. The DVD picture and sound quality is excellent. The HDCD capability was a major selling point. We have watched several movies and played dozens of CD's without any problem at all. Every sound is played as it was meant to be heard.

Strength:

Great build & sound quality. Replacement for CD Changer.

Weakness:

Terrible remote.

This player WILL shuffle ALL CDS!!! Here is what you need to do:
1. Use the disk skip to recognize all the CD's you want to shuffle (Little red line under the disk #).
2. Get back to disk #1 (either disk skip or directly)
3. Press random then play.
Will randomize between ALL CDS!! Is a little bit of a hassle, but the player NEEDS to recognize that they are CD's before it will randomize them. I _think_ you also need to start from disk 1 to get them all to shuffle.
The video and audio from this player are fantastic! The HDCD and AL24 processing are great as well. For the price of this thing it needs a better remote though.
The only player that compared (features) was the Toshiba. I really wanted the higher quality DAC's (w/AL24) in the Denon though since I was replacing my CD player. A great buy in my opinion.

Strength:

Good performance, good features

Weakness:

Somewhat clumsy operation, nothing serious

Auditioned this product at home in the hopes of killing 2 birds with one stone -- getting into DVD and replacing my tired old CD player with carousel.

As a DVD player I have no complaints. The picture was excellent(didn't try it with downconversion though)and although the remote is kinda small it worked fine and the unit functioned very well. One quibble--when I would unload a CD and close the tray it would automatically start to play if there was another CD in the tray, so I would have to hit "stop" again after the tray was closed.

As a CD player I immediately noticed the sound was clearer and the bass was tighter and better defined. But upon further listening I found the sound to be a bit on the hard side and front-to-back soundstage depth was less pronounced. If I were to sum up, the sound was very clear and detailed, but somewhat cold, analytical, and lacking the warmth and realism that helps bring me all the way into the music. Not bad sound at all, just not that involving.

So, as a DVD player I give it high marks, but at this price I was expecting better performance on the CD side. Maybe most DVD players are just not as well suited to playing CDs(although I certainly could see how others with different tastes from mine might love this as a CD player), and my search continues. Now I'm thinking about a cheaper DVD player and an outboard DAC(maybe the MSB Link DAC). Any thoughts out there?
(p.s. this audition was done after about 48 hours of burn-in time, and if this player takes longer to break in, as may very well be the case, please take my comments above in that context)

Strength:

Do not know where to start. The system that we put together makes us feel like we are really at the movies. If we has known it could be "this good" we would have junked the old 2 channell years ago. Overall this unit is fantastic. Would highly recommend.

Weakness:

None Found

We recently began re-decorating the family room. After visiting a couple local stores we searched on-line and lo and behold we found www.acousticsounddesign.com They ship out of Las Vegas, so not only did we save money on the system-no shipping of the product was involved.

The System includes:

Denon AVR-5800
Denon DVM-3700
Klipsch KLF-20
Klipsch KLF-C7
Klipsch RS-3
Klipsch KSW 15
Monster Power Center HTS-2500
Energy Tempest for the back yard.

They included a 100 foot spool of Monster wire, a sub kit and a DVD install kit at no charge. I ran into a problem with the set up of the KSW 15 and they had an installer come the next day to get it right. Needless to say the system is unbelievable. The remote works everything. Watching DVDs with this speaker set up is really like "being at the movies". Even watching the television sounds better.

Strength:

CD audio playback quality, HDCD, video quality

Weakness:

light weight, no CD-R playback, crappy remote

This is the first and only DVD player I have owned and I'm in no way an audio/video-phile type. So consider my comments in that light.

Bought this unit refurbished from uBid instead of the more expensive THX certified DVD-5000 because of the superior reviews for the 3700 over the 5000 on this site and because of the convenience of a carousel.

I haven't been disappointed. The video is clear, crisp and artifact free to my eyes. But its the audio that has amazed me. I can't believe how much more I hear from this player than from others I've listened to including any NAD. An A/B comparison with my Denon CDRW-1500 burner showed the 3700 to be superior in audio playback even though both had optical connection to my receiver. The only player I've enjoyed this much was a Rotel unit playing an HDCD disc.

Thankfully I have experienced no reliability problems so far. The reasons I give only 4 stars for value is that its pretty expensive given that it does not have progressive scan, doesn't play CD-Rs, pathetic remote and doesn't weigh very much (feels a little cheap). And I would like to have a second optical output to connect directly to my CD burner, so the coax will have to do.

But to my untrained eyes and ears this unit is great and I can't justify getting a more expensive DVD or CD player when I probably wouldn't notice any improvement.

my system:

DVD player: Denon DVM-3700
receiver: Denon AVR-4800
CD player: Denon CDRW-1500 HDCD burner (coax interconnect)
front speakers: Klipsch KSP-400
rear speakers: Klipsch Quintets
center speaker: Klipsch KSCC-1

I have used this dvd player for a while now and compaired it to many others, none come close for audio and unless you look at progresive models. I sometimes think the transport is slow to change or load disks but how picky can one get, I am not in that big of a hury. All I can say is this, when I listen to music I'm always impressed and when I watch movies I am always impressed so what more can I ask for ?
OK progressive scan!I have had no problems, freeze up', skips ect, the build quility is top notch and recommend this player highly!

Strength:

True random play, build quality, sound and video experience

Weakness:

Remote has tiny buttons and seems to point wrong way. Costs too much.

When I was looking to replace my first generation DVD player and Onkyo 6 disk change with one unit, the important things to me were:

1) Great Quality
2) Great Picture and Sound
3) Carosel with true random play

It was pretty easy to get good picture. Sound is always debatable. A carosel with true random for CD playback ... very hard to find. This unit does it.

The picture quality is top notch, and the sound was a big improvement over my previous CD player, even though I am using the digital out to my Yamaha DSP-A1. The bass is tight and deep and controled with beautiful mids and highs. I would recommend this player to anyone interested in owning the best. I bought on-line for $800 at Sound Distributors.
