Convenience,Build quality,Sound Quality

Weakness:

Remote not illuminated/ Doesn't appear to read burned CD's *see summary/A little slow on reading CD's at start up

I have used this unit for about 1-week now and am very impressed with the CD audio playback. I have hooked the toslink up to my Adcom new model GTP-750 in order to use the Adcom's Dac's. I also have hooked the Denon's Analog outputs up to the Adcom's CD inputs in order to use the Denon's Dac's. I now can do A-B comparisons of the different Dac's. I find the Denon has about 3-db more low end output as measured on a RTA than the Adcom's. The denon is a little less bright on the top end. The Adcom appears to be clearer but this could be due to the brighter top end.I really am not sure which I like best as I keep going back and forth. The Video playback is fine and I have not had any lip synch problems as mentioned with some other players. I tried some burned Cd's which my old Sony ES changer would read and I get an error message. I plan on trying another blank Cd manufacturer to see if that may be the case. Either way I am completely satisfied with this unit as it has saved space in my rack by only needing one player for both jobs plus offers the convenience of a changer. The slow thing on start up also appears to be the Denon deciding what type of Disc is in. Not really a big deal for me. My only hesitation in giving 5 stars is the reliability for this unit as it is a new product and time will tell. For now 4.5!!!!

Strength:

HDCD Audio, 24/96 DVD Audio, and DVD AV Quality

I have been most impressed with the analog audio (you cannot use the digital audio outputs and expect to benefit from the Denon's DAC's for 24/96 and HDCD playback) output for HDCD and 24/96 playback. It took awhile to figure out the somewhat confusing instructions in the manual regarding playback of the above source material, but once I figured out how to set it up, it has been well worth the effort. I have listened to CD playback on regular CD player (Sony player) and the Denon on the same HDCD encoded discs and the difference is incredible (this can also be taken as a strong endorsement for record companies to utilize HDCD technology). Bass response and greatly increased dynamic range are the most obvious benefits of HDCD. 24/96 DVD playback (both HDCD and 24/96 playback require that you defeat all DSP effects on your receiver - I am using a Yamaha 995)benefits from a greater bass and high end response, cleaner sound and enhanced dynamic range (based on listening to regular CD and 24/96 versions of Coltrane's "Blue Train" and Adderley's "Somethin' Else").

The video output on DVD's outperforms the Sony 330 (well it should given the difference in price). The Denon offers much better user flexibility and selectivity for both setting up and playing back source material.

This unit has great flexibility and outstanding output. The quality of the DAC's on this unit alone are worth the price.

Strength:

Excellent video and audio performance.

Weakness:

Remote has too many small buttons, not backlit.

I purchased this unit from Spidergear (refurbished by Denon)
for $599.00. I have a 90 day warranty and am using it daily for both video and cd playback to "burn" it in and make sure it has no defects. It replaces my ancient Onkyo 6 disc changer (circa 1986) and my Panasonic A110. First thing I noticed was the difference in audio (on both dvd and cd). It is outstanding. Much tighter bass and I seem to hear everything clearer from all 5 channels. The video is much better than my Panasonic and the black is "blacker". Overall a great unit. Note, the remote came w/Panasonic batteries and I am betting that the chassis or some components were built by Panasonic and the bulk of the electronics were built by Denon. I can only give it 4 stars overall because the remote is terrible. However, I programmed all of the functions to my Marantz RC MK 2000 and the original remote now sits in my cd cabinet (w/5 others).

Strength:

This is a great sounding and visual piece for video. I strongly suggest this piece.

Weakness:

Remote lacks but unit compensates for that. I use an aftermarket remote. I don't use cdr's so I don't care if people say it doesn't read them.

This unit has pure fun all over it. It has some amazing sound quality and is a great video piece. My system is a Sony SAT-A3 and a SAT-A4 for DSS, one AC-3 and on regular for PIP. Next up I have a SLV-R1000 Sony S-VHS VCR. Next I have a DMD-1000 Denon Mini-Disk which is an amazing piece. I highly suggest it. Then I also just purchased the DVM-3700 Denon DVD/CD player to replace my Adcom GCD-700 CD player and my Panasonic DVD. I also purchased a MP-HTS2500 Monster Power center which was needed. Speakers are Polk RM6500's in white on RB1 stands from Furniture works and the center channel rest on an Omnimount 25RST in white. I upgraded all my audio and video cables to Monster Z series and optical cables to Monster Lightspeed 200 and coax to IDL-100. I have it connected to a Toshiba Cinema Series TV on a Bell'oggetti B-715 stand while I await my AR-716 towers for my audio to arrive. I use a RMAV-2000 Sony remote to control everything. Add my Denon AH-D950 headphones to keep the wife quiet at night. AH-D650's are kept for travelling. I feel I have reached an excellent system that makes me comfortable. If I can now keep the wife and kids away from it......

Strength:

Picture, Audio CD quality, component video output,
build quality and features.

Weakness:

None at this price. But, if you must, the remote is its only, drawback, however, they put the money into the other
more important qualities.

I was looking for a DVD and CD player combo, but did not want to sacrafice 2-ch CD quality, as I still listen to about 75% 2-ch CD. The picture thru the DENON is first rate.
I do suggest to use the component connection to the TV.
I'm using the 32" Panasonic Super-flat TV (excellent TV)
The difference in the component connection compared to the
S-video was well noticed. The colors were more true, and no
bleeding of the colors was present with the component connection. The overall Image was sharper and cleaner with
component. As far as 2-ch audio, the Denon was great. At this time, I'm using the Denon as a transport for 2-CH Cd.
I'm using a $3000.00 Classe processor/pre, and using the
Denon as a transport. But, when I switch to bypass, and listen to the Denon as a CD player, It rivals the Classe.
Not quite as good as the Classe's DAC's, but, for a $1000
CD/DVD player, it put on one heck of a show.
Overall, I highly recommend the Denon as a great CD/DVD
player, and if you have an audiophile quality processor
the denon makes one heck of a CD transport. via-digital coax or toslink output. I personally recommend the
Illuminations D-60 digital coax cable by Kimber.

Still a wonderful performer, but now better...

Weakness:

Still none

Right at the start, please don't send back nasty notes for being my second review; but, just had a day off to re- valuate, and simply had to send a new note. Being a VCR owner before, I was quite accustomed to the usual plug in a few banana plugs and wathch movies concept. Well, I finally sat down and read the manual for the 3700.

Well, now that I have connected an optical cable, and gold plugs- YAHOO!! This unit, coupled with the Denon 3300 Receiver is knocking my socks off!! Just watched Matrix, and was overwhelmed. So, my last review was somewhat mild -but this one is an ABSOLUTE MUST buy!

Strength:

Superb video and audio performance, features, build quality.

Weakness:

Slow starting a disk, typical tiny-buttoned Denon remote

I purchased one of these on the strength of the reviews on this site. I'm glad to say I was not disappointed. I got the chance to use both a Sony S330 and an S550 while I was waiting for my Denon to arrive. To be fair, I must say that these two units are quite nice for their price and I would recomend them to anyone who does not have a grand to spend on a DVD player. However, if you want to take a step up...

This player is now the mainstay of my home entertainment system. I can't remember the last time I watched a VHS tape or listened to a cassette tape. This product is simply a joy to use. The picture quality is excellent, and when paired with my Sony Wega XBR TV, the detail and contrast is almost too revealing. I have begun to notice the shortcomings of MPEG2 video compression. As for playing CDs, my collection has never sounded better. Once again, to be fair, I must say that I did upgrade my entire system, and so do not have an apples-to-apples comparison to my old Yamaha CDC-755 CD player, but there is nothing about this one that would strike me as "bad sounding". When coupled with my Denon AVR-4800 and run through Jamo 128s the result is a warm, mellow, yet detailed and precicely imaged sound that is the best I have ever heard.

The other attractive thing for me was the presence of all of the high-end features (component video outputs, Alpha processing, HDCD decoding, etc...) without the inclusion of exteraneous features such as Dolby digital and DTS decoders. Most anyone purchasing a unit such as this is going to have at least a receiver with AC-3 and DTS capabilities and therefore the extra equipment is wasted. I appreciate the fact that Denon focused on builting a higher-quality transport and pickup rather than saddle me with things I'm not going to use.

In my humble opinion, if you are looking for a solid upper-mid-fi component and like the prospect of having all of your digital source needs in one box, you will not be disappointed by this unit. I won't presume to tell anyone that it is vastly better then their player, just that I own one and I love it.

5-disc carousel, excellent CD player as well, stunning video through component, digital outs.

Weakness:

Expensive

This is my first DVD player and since I went with a Denon AVR receiver, I purchased this player at the same time. The reviews of this unit didn't hurt either.

I have it hooked straight up to my Hi-Res 36" monitor via the components and a coax digital out to the AVR-3300. The picture and sound is incredible. I have had no problems with any of the DVDs I've played.

Alot of people mention the remote as a weakness. I usually read all of my manuals up front just because I like to, so I learn the remotes functions quickly. They may not always be laid out well and efficient but if you take the time to learn you can use the remote and do what you need to do quickly.

Music CDs sound excellent as well. I like the 5-disc carousel. It is an expensive piece of equipment but it has some really nice audio enhancing features and it really dishes out the audio and visual goods. I highly recommend it.

Strength:

Almost everything. CD's sound great, DVD's look and sound great.

Weakness:

Can't play burned CD's. Very occasionally skips to the next disc in the middle of a disc.

My ancient CD player finally died, and I'm not an audiophile, so I figured I could find a combination CD/DVD player that I'd be happy with (my usage is about 85% CDs/15% DVDs). After using this site and other sources for about 2 months (but never actually going to listen to anything, I should note), I chose the DVM-3700. I got it for $675 refurbished on UBid, and after noting the occasional problems some had reported on this site I sprang for the (overpriced) warranty just in case. I couldn't be happier. I'm using a new Denon AVR-2801, a Paradigm CC-70 center channel, Paradigm Mini Monitors as the mains, and Boston Acoustics HD5s as the surrounds (no sub). The TV, soon to be upgraded, is an ancient 21" Panasonic. The whole combo is a little much for my relatively small apartment, but it sounds great now and will only sound better, I'm sure, once it's in a larger space.

My CD collection, which ranges all over the place - jazz, soft & hard rock, new age, classical, showtunes - has never sounded better. A really rich, full sound. I don't need all of the bells and whistles some of the other CD/DVD players seemed to offer - all you need for CDs is the 5-channel stereo option, which even my far-from-audio-enthusiast better half says is great.

As this is my first DVD player and I don't have a high-quality TV, I don't really have much to compare it to, but thus far it's been excellent. I've played one or two average movies on it (Galaxy Quest, Cabaret), which looked and sounded fine, and then after reading comments in the Home Theater Forum on this site I checked out Saving Private Ryan and for the first time realized what DVD was all about. The aural effect, even without a sub, which I don't plan to get, is absolutely stunning.

As has been noted many times on this site, the manual, though fine, could be a little better, and the sliders on the remotes certainly aren't the most user-friendly design, but you get used to them. My only two real nitpicks are noted above: I was surprised to find that the player won't read burned audio CDs, and about 1 out of every 100-150 times the player will in the middle of a CD skip to the next one. A little annoying, but hardly a huge problem or worth dismantling it and sending it back for.

Those little things are the reason why it only gets 4 overall stars (I wish I could give 4 1/2), but for what I paid for it the performance and quality is outstanding, which is why it gets 5 in value.

I would most highly recommend the DVM-3700 to anyone, from someone getting their first DVD player to an experienced audiophile, whether you're planning to use it mostly for CDs, or DVDs, or a mix of the two. Much thanks to everyone on the site for the helpful reviews on various products.

Great picture, audio and build.

Weakness:

Remote is pathetic. Some reading quirks.

I got this player about 2 months ago and it is fantastic. It is easy to use and has superb picture and sound. I have had a few problems with it, not sure if it is the player or the discs. On some discs there is a slight pause between frames during a movie. It happens on the same spots on the discs so it may be the disc. Also a few times the player has stopped a movie midway to skip to the next disc. It has only done this maybe 3 times out the hundreds of times I have used it. But still weird. Overall, this is still a great piece and the price I got it for is rather remarkable. I just wish it would play CD-Rs.
