Denon's CS could certainly use some work! Everytime I have a question, I'm either put on hold forever, or simply can't reach anyone at all! CS doesn't match products!

When it works it has decent picture and OK audio fidelity, but certainly not superb.

It's mechanics are clunky and failure prone. Sounds like it has plastic gears, but I am not sure. It has broken twice.

This unit is mechanically clunky. A real piece of crap. DO NOT BUY IT, you'll be sorry!!!

I have owned this unit for about 6 months. I have been mostly satisfied with the performance it offers, and while a little on the expensive side, it is over all a decent machine. However two months ago the unit lost the ability to hold a picture when displaying a DVD. It looked like a TV wit no horizontal hold. I sent it back to Denon and it has been there ever since. Two weeks ago when I called they told me it would ship out in a few days. Last week when I called they told me they will have to wait several weeks for parts. I spoke to the same person each time. I had a similar experience with a Denon product last year. My AVR 4800 receiver died and I had to wait six months for the warranty repair to be made. At this point I have very negative feelings towards Denon and I will never again purchase one of their products.

price, "too smooth sound"?

Stange as it may seem I might be one of the only people to complain about sound quality with this machine. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I like brighter highs and a more solid image. I read another review that explained how the sound wasn't quite "involving" enough and I'll have to agree. I will say however that sound is smooth as silk. As far as the dvd player part is concerned, this thing kicks a**! The sound in any 5.1 format (Dolby or DTS) is excellent. The picture is also crisper than anything I've seen on my piece of crap Zenith 27 inch set (I want to upgrade, believe me, but I'm more into the sound for now). However, this all aside, as a stand alone CD player I find the DVM-4800 a bit, just a little, dissapointing. My previous DVD player was a bottom of the heap Panasonic and it seemed to be crisper and definately more transparent than the Denon in terms of music playback. But in no way was the Panasonic better for surround and the Denon's picture is FAR superior. I just wish that I could have the same crisp clean and transparent sound from CDs. Maybe I set something wrong or messed up my optical cable or something...who knows. Anyway, all in all I like this piece and I think I'll keep it.

Great overall player. My 4800 was made in July 2002 and has no problems at all. In fact, it can read DVDs or CDs in about 12-13 seconds. It appears that Denon has improved the transport speed from the earlier models. The sound is smooth and refined even with regular CD playback.

Unable to play DVD-Audio without using a TV. Clunky & noisy platter. Remote is typical Denon read: buttons to small and not user friendly.

I like Denon players. I have had CD players, Laser Disk players and DVD players. I was excited to listen to this player. I can only review the audio because I bought this for my listening room. It never made it into the HT. I broke the player in for about a week before I critically listened to it. So here are my findings: CD''s - better than most players. Good sound stage and imaging almost 3D! Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here. (1994 version) HDCD''s - Great. The player performs best with HDCDs. Everything like CD''s but better. Eric Clapton, Reptile & Paula Cole, This Fire. DVD-Audio - I limited the test to high resolution stereo. This was disappointing. I used the Fleetwood Mac Rumours and Eric Clapton Reptile. Both collapsed the sound stage. I have these disks as CD and HDCD. They sound better as CD and HDCD. The player is very slow to start playing. The platter is slow, noisy and clunky. You have to use a TV to choose the audio format. This should be selectible from the front panel. In brief, I was not impressed. A Toshiba 5700 sounded better in DVD-Audio. High audio and video quality.

Operation, ergonomics, price -- in this order

I auditioned a Denon DVM-4800 DVD player for several days, then took it back to Tweeter. I have been waiting for the ''end-all'' DVD player for some time now. I wanted a player that will replace both my CD player (Denon DCM-560, $650 list) and DVD player (Pioneer DV-333, $165 mail order). Therefore, multi disc capability was a major reuqirement. I wanted the latest technology (24bit/192KHz audio DACs, 12bit video DACs, absolutely no chroma upsampling bug) and ability to play as many as possible of the current formats. The DVM-4800 ($1200 list) seemed to fill the bill. It plays CD, CDV, CDR and CD-RW discs, DVD-A, HDCD and MP3 (but not SACD) in a 5 disc carousel. Specs are top notch. The good news is that performance was good. From analog output, CDs sounded the same (or a smidgen better, dpending on the CD and music) than my dedicated CD player (totally identical from digital output). DVDs looked visibly better than my low end Pioneer (the DVM-4800 puts out progressive scan, the Pioneer doesn''t) -- video was smooth, very film like and with very low noise. While I didn''t take the cover off, the sheer weight (about 20 lbs) and solidity of the player are reassuring. The plastic drawer is not quite as clunky as some others... The bad news is... everything else: Denon has seriously screwed up on operation, ergonomics and ease of use. Some of their design decisions are inexplicable. The remote is not back lighted -- no big deal, I was going to transfer it to my Marantz 5000i, anyway. Another small irritation is On/Off control. The player has three modes: Off (AC is completely off), standby (AC is supplied, but player is Off) and On. Denon has seen fit to provide Standby and On buttons on the remote and an On/Off switch on the front panel. When that switch is in the Off position, there is no way to turn the player On from the remote. If you leave that switch in the On position, but cut AC power from the main system switch (as I do), the player will come On whenever you switch the system On, even when you don''t want it to. A serious irritation is the long time this player takes to do its stuff. Press Play and it treats you to a long series of internal movements, but no output. You are sure something is wrong, until it finally starts to play. Play a CD and press FF. It will stop, and wait. And wait. And wai

Before I purchased this DVD Player I went here and found 4 or 5 reviews and they were fair. The unit had just been released so I was not sure if I should get it or not! I like Denon Products! So, I bought it! First of all I''ve been looking for a Player that could and would play everything [just about except SACD]. I had a CD Player [plays cd-r''s], DVD Audio Player w/progressive-scan [did not play cd-r''s,VCD''s] DVD player with HDC Decoder [played VCD''s not DVD audio] Confusing to many components, drove me nuts!!! This units has all of the above and "out performed" My JVC DVD audio Player single disc [progressive scan] and my CD {5 disc] player. My Toshiba DVD [single disc] Player w/HDCD and DTS playback, Panasonic DVD [single disc] Player for SVCD''s and VCD''s....COST w/cables $2000.00.. Remembering which does what....Forget it! Kudos to Denon for making my life simple and building a superb Unit! This has a High End build quality and a Elegant look. Reading is a bit slow but not anything I could complain about, especially when I used to have to get up and put DVD''s, CD''s and VCD''s in different components. Besides the Laser has to pick and choose which is CD''s, VCD''s DVD Audio ETC. The carousel is a bit noisey if you are listening for it. Believe me there is room for improvement but for the first player that does everything not a bad Unit! BY THE Way, I sold all me other units, Which ended up paying for this one and some spare change to pick up some more DVD''s

Incredible picture clarity, amazing sound quality

on screen displays can be clumsy, remote is kinda lame

From the moment I hooked up this DVD player I was in awe. Once I went through and set it up for my TV (Panasonic Tau 27" CT-27SX11 through Monster Video 2 Component cable) I nearly wet myself. Denon has definately figured out how to get the clearest picture possible and the sound was crystal clear. I heard things through my television speakers I had never heard through my old Kenwood VR-409 (recently upgraded to Denon AVR-4802 for obvious reasons) Probably the best thing about this player is the plethora of options for tweaking the picture and sound. If you like to have complete control over what you see this is the DVD player for you.
As for the DVD-Audio portion.... Again I was shocked at the clarity above that of other DVD-A players. I listened to Eric Clapton & B.B. King's "Riding with the King" and could actually hear guitar strings vibrating and hitting the frets. However, I did discover that the sound is much better through the coax connection than through the others.
Overall.... I would reccomend this to anyone who is looking for a DVD/DVD-A player in this price range. You won't be sorry.
