The Spongebob Squarepants DVD Player: Model SB329 manufactured by Emerson is really a nice little entertainment system. I have no real reason why I bought this DVD player other than it's price ($5.00) and that it is just darn cute.
I watched a couple of movies in it when I first got it and it played liked normal DVD player. I then put it away to keep as a spare DVD player or if someone I know wanted one for their kids. Well to get to the point of this review, I collect CDs with HDCD encoding. It is always nice when I find a CD not labeled that it is HDCD encoded.
One day I was checking out some of my DVD players and video game console's cd player screens and I hooked up this Spongebob player and put in a CD. I just happened to be using one of my HDCD disc and when it started up the letters HDCD popped up on the screen. WOW! what did I find here, after trying out a few of my HDCD CDs it was evident that Spongebob was fitted with an HDCD encoder.
After doing some research online and through the manual I could not find any info supporting what I had discovered. This player plays DVD, CD, CD R/RW, MP3, and JPEG photo discs. Is this thing fitted with high-end ( so reported) electronics like the first Sony Playstation model?
I really think that this player sounds good. It has the standard RCA type audio/video hookups, coaxial digital out, but no s-video or component jacks. There are many sound options in the easy to use setup menu. The remote is comfortable to use and the buttons are laid out well.
