Strength:

Excellent price, picture & sound quality. Cool 90 day warranty from Wal-Mart.

Weakness:

None

I got it at Wal-Mart for $148. It was a closeout model but it included the Software update. I had bought a Zenith model & returned it when I saw the price on the GE. It works excellent so far and I have absoluteky no complaints for the price.

Strength:

NONE

Weakness:

The entire product is defective. It freezes on most DVDs. It won't play many DVDs. It won't play many of the special features on DVDs. All in all, a very defective non-working product.

I was very unhappy with this product. It simply did not work. I called GE's toll free number to either get an exchange or have them fix the DVD player. The first time I called I talked to a lady that was very nice and willing to help me. She said I needed to go through a couple steps first: (reset the machine and clean it). I did this and it didn't work. So I called the number again. The man I talked to was very ignorant. He knew nothing and was not willing to honor the 90 day warranty. He told me the DVDs I bought were probably defective. If 60% of all DVDs bought were defective, I don't think many people would buy them. Then he told me to take it back to the store I bought it. He knew nothing about this model and the fact that it is defective and many people have had problems with it. My solution was to go back to the store I bought it and I exchanged it for a new one, more expensive, but a SONY. My Sony works wonderful and none of DVDs were defective, just the GE machine I was unlucky enough to buy first. When I was looking at other DVD players, the salesman told me to stay away from GE and RCA, even though the RCA was more expensive and his commission would have been more, he said NO NO NO, don't buy those brands, stay away from them. He lead me the more reliable Sony. My advice: stay away from GE and RCA (same company). Poor products and Very Poor Customer Service.

Strength:

*****actually GE1015P*********extremely low price. found at best buys for only $169 plus other credit discounts.

Weakness:

Had to take the first unit back. There was considerable lip sync and the unit skipped easily. Haven't encountered these problems as of yet on the dvd player I have now.
Few features. Relatively long time before movie starts to play.

Good starter for the price. Easy to hook up and use.
Had to take the first one back. Doesn't say too much for initial quality.

Strength:

Inexpensive

Weakness:

No DTS

Actually I have not received my GE player yet, I a getting one as a prize in a contest at work. In the process of researching this player, I noticed that there are not many reviews of this player, actually it is almost impossible to prove of its exsistence. I did eventually find info at 800.com. There are some owner reviews and product information. They also sell it really cheap.

Strength:

There are no strengths to this junk pile.

Weakness:

Skips, locks up, won't play, anything that could go wrong.

This is concerning the GE5803P, which is supposedly the top of the line three disc DVD which also is supposed to support MP3 disks. This unit has all of the above mentioned problems, won't play anything in normal "Pan and Scan" mode (even those DVDs that are specifically recorded in that format), and has ruined several of my DVDs. I can not believe that GE would contract out to Thomson Consumer Electronics for such a manufacturing/design nightmare. I will never again buy anything that is produced by TCE. I also have a Pro-Scan TV which went on the fritz within the first month that I had it. I had to take it back 3 times, but could not exchange for another. I finally had to implement a work around myself (this is another TCE product). Stay away from anything GE/RCA/Pro-Scan. I even tried looking for anything on the internet that could be referenced about this DVD player - no luck. I wouldn't support a nightmare like this either. I would suggest sticking with Kenwood/Sony/Phillips; I have had several of those products and all have never given me any problems.

Strength:

Price. Remote layout is clear and easy to understand.

Weakness:

Skips on most DVD's. Has no extra features.

I returned a Panasonic because I couldn't stand the remote. I bought this for $159 at Best Buy! -You get what you pay for. The first 2 or 3 DVD's I watched were o.k. Then it started skipping. I returned it and bought an Onkyo 6 disk DVD/CD changer. Paid $439. Well worth the extra money. The picture is superior, the sound is superior, the features are awesome (like zoom, rich black, programable replay, etc.) Do not waste your time or money on this product. If you want a good DVD player, take a good long look at the Onkyo line.

Strength:

$. Remote. Did I mention $?

Weakness:

Not sure yet.

I read a lot of DVD reveiws on this site and I went out on a limb. Today I purchased the GE1105P (I requested the category added here) at Walmart for $173. It seems to have all the features I need and great picture quality for entry level hardware. I am not able to use the S-video out yet, but the RCA's work great so far.

I have played 2 RENTED movies today back to back. Austin powers (if you care) and the The Matrix. Both were flawless. No lipsync, no skip, no freeze, nothing. Did I mention they are rentals? A few scratches on both but no errors.

Machine is not too loud or too hot after 5 hours. Also plays audio CD's well (I don't have any CD-R's). Wally World will take it back for 90 days so I figure it was worth the try and if I need to I can trade up to another model. I am definately sold on the DVD experience. R.I.P. VCR !

By the way, mine does have the sticker that says this is the software upgraded version. For this DVD, 5 movies, and 13 rentals I don't think I can go wrong considering the return policy.

I will post if I have any problems.

Strength:

price, userfriendly remote

Weakness:

1st dvd I tried to play was Entrapment, would not recognize the cd, then The Matrix, eventually worked but with lipsync problems and momentary pauses in the dvd.

I bought this unit at Walmart for 172.00, great price. Too bad the unit is garbage. Do your homework and do not rush to buy the best priced unit.

Strength:

Low Price. Easy to use. High quality video. S-Video compatible.

Weakness:

No zoom. Occasional (about once in 2.5 hours) pixillation, not really noticeable. Copy protection restrics ability to use VCR's RCA jacks...had to buy a 30.00 RF converter from Radio Shack.

This is a GE1105S.
So far I have been extremely happy with it. I have had no problems with it. I like the Dolby Surround Sound and 5.1CH sound it offers. The price is right at 172.88 from Wal-Mart #0596.
