I bought this at wal-mart in 2000, because of it's cheap price. i wish i would have shelled out 50 more bucks or so and got something better. loading times are really slow. almost every movie i've watched has a couple instances where a frame will freeze for a half second or the screen will become pixelated. tolerable i guess but annoying nonethleless. also my remote control goes through batteries ridiculously fast. buy something else. |

Strength:
Value priced
Weakness:
Doesn't work most of the time. Not a very good DVD player. This is my first one I have bought and do not recommend this player to anyone. I have had numerous movies lock up half way through the movie or not even play at all. The skipping happens with most movies somewhere during the movie. I initially thought the problems were with the discs, but when I took them to a friends house and played it on their DVD player (another brand) the disc played fine. Bad player! Don't buy it. |

Price (upfront), universal remote
Weakness:
degenerates quickly, simply will not play some DVD's, absolutely evil customer service. The reason I say price upfront, is it's a good price, but not worth the aggrivation. Especially of you send it back and pay whay they want you to! It worked fine on a few films, then just refused to play a very basic, bare-bones (not VCD) DVD. It just stuck. I tested out the DVD on other machines and it worked fine. After 5 days of calling customer sevice, I finally got through. I held for quite a while, and finally got through to a rep. THey told me I had to pay to send it back and have them work on it. I asked if that was true, since it was their problem, and they said there was no problem. I actually had to inform the rep of the announcement I heard on their line specifically addressing the problem with the unit and a software authoring mistake. After that experience, and the problems the player was having, I simply returned it and, in order to completly avoid Thompson Consumer Electronics, went Japanese and am very happy. doesn't play scary movie and was basically a piece of junk from the very first day.skips and lags through movies There is not another GE product that i will buy ever!!!!This is the biggest joke as far as DVD players and there are tons out there that are better.Pay the little bit of extra money and get a Sony of Samsung and it will be worth it instead of putting up with GE customer service. They are rude and unknowledgeable and good luck with getting something out of them under warranty. They do not seem to know what the problem is until you have to pay for it.Don't make this mistake buy another brand.!!!! It will not work from the very first day and if it does then you are lucky but it will not last long. |

Makes a good paperweight
Weakness:
Everything Piece of junk with total lack of support from some group of people who think they are customer service. The player worked well for a short time and began to skip and then stopped altogether. When I called Thomson Consumer Electronics, the only thing the so-called customer service rep offered was that I now owned a paperweight. She was rude, completely unhelpful and was not interested in providing any service. This thing wasted my son's money who purchased it as a gift for me. Like may others, I will not buy another GE product! This is the most miserable piece of junk ever!!!!!!!!!!!! Too bad the rating doesne't allow us to show minus stars! This worthless thing only takes up space...... |

Strength:
A decent value mabye? Serves purpose okay if you just want a dvd player and you do not need all the fancy stuff. Played every movie I tried to watch.
Weakness:
Looked kind of tacky, I felt bad for owning one because everybody bashes these. I cannot really complain about this DVD player too much...It was reliable enough...it played every movie I ever tried to watch, which was a big plus...only movie it ever had a problem with was during the closing credits of Romy and Micheles Highschool Reunion, Mine played The Matrix with no noticable problems...One strange thing it would do is occasionally when I would put in a dvd, everything on the screen would be green...kicking it out and putting it back in fixed it every time...I ended up getting rid of it and buying the Panasonic because I became quite a fan of DVDs and wanted a "decent" player. does the job, has some decent options.
Weakness:
Takes a while to learn the remote in a dark room! I was taking this off the shelf when another customer informed me that they had some serial numbers that had problems playing some dvd's, mostly the sound. He told me GE gave him a list of serial numbers, and told him the fix was in later models. So he was replacing it with 1 when I was there. So I took it home and checked the model number, it was in the "fixed" list serial numbers. To date, I have this hooked up on a 36" tv with a very good sound system and have had no problems with it at all. They now sell for around 130140 at Walmart, but mine came with 5 movies and 13 rental coupons...so it came down to really only paying about 20 bucks for it if you take that into account. I have no problems with skipping/jumping or sound at all, and I watch ALOT of movies! It doesn't have some of the features I have seen on other makes of players, but then again, for what I paid, it's been a very stable and hardy machine. The remote and menu functions leave alot to be desired though, especially in the dark...they could have made it a bit more friendly. And in that price range, i have seen alot worse from friends who have other models. No major complaints! Similar Products Used: none |
