Strength:

decent quality for a reasonable price

Weakness:

software probs.

I have owned this DVD player for over a yaer now. I am only now beginning to experience problems. I recently purchased the movie "Scary Movie" and when I try to load, the screen gets stuck on the FBI copyright warning. This is the only movie in the 100 DVD collection that I have problems with. Matrix plays flawlessly with no freezing or pausing. Only the layer shift will cause a slight delay in performance on this player. The one problem that I have had is trying to find information on customer service for this player on the web. In the process of moving to a foriegn country, I have misplaced my owners manual and cannot find the customer service number or e-mail address for GE or Thomson Consumer Electronics. Can anyone help?

When we bought this machine about a year ago, we were actually looking for a second VHS for our home. We saw how inexpensive it was, bought it and opened up a whole new realm of home entertainment for ourselves. That's the key and one of the main objectives that motivate these manufacturers; hardware penetration into the market
(all VSDA members/Video Software Dealers Association). The home video software companies at all levels were dying on the vine until DVD's came along. So it doesn't matter so much that the machine lasts a life time as it does that you go out and start replacing all of your video tapes with discs (like I did). It makes me feel totally manipulated- I've bought about 50 discs this year!. After about 14 months this machine just stopped playing 90% of my CD's and is becoming increasingly less capable of playing DVD's. I did equate the low price with less "bells and whistles" but never thought that it meant the player wouldn't be worth a damn after a year so, no I don't feel like I just "got what I paid for!" I feel ripped off!! I can't beleive that a company as all-American as apple pie would have so little conscience towards it's American consumers! SHAME on you, GE!

Strength:

Lots of features, at least as promised. High perceived value

Weakness:

No DTS. Picture lock-up and loss of audio/video sync a frequent occurrence.

Well GE folks, three strikes and yer out! My first 1105P had immediate screen lock-up problems. Customer service tried to sell me the firmware upgrade and I said no way. After considerable discussion, they opted to just replace my unit.

Ah, the second unit arrives and guess what? That one has the same problem! Customer service now assures me that the replacement did, in fact, have the firmware upgrade and that my problem was due to dust in the tray. Hmmm...kinda interesting, the unit I received just days previously now had dust bunnies? Wow, the GE reps must have a list of the 10 most common excuses taped to their phones! So they send me a cleaning kit and that, of course, does nothing.

Round 3: After much complaining, they replace my unit a second time. At first, I was optimistic that this one would really work, only to find that I'm still experiencing the same problems as the first unit. Some DVDs work fine, others skip, and lose synchronization of audio/video. Geez...with this technology run amok, we can now see the latest releases with the same impressive quality as those beloved first-generation Godzilla movies!

Prices are dropping so spend a few extra $$ and steer clear of this Edsel of a DVD player.

Strength:

Very low price, great when it's not pausing all the time

Weakness:

Lots of freezing (for short periods of time, not total lock ups), flickering picture sometimes (small white lines, not really noticable when you're not looking for em)

I bought this DVD just about a month ago and it was great the first night I had it. Movies like The Matrix played perfectly. Aside from the layer change of course.

"We're ------" *next scene*

Now just last night I watch the matrix again and the movie seems to be pausing every few minutes just for a split second it's REALLY annoying when you're trying to enjoy a good movie. It didn't seem to have the same pausing problem on other movies though.. The flicking I mentioned in the weakness is also not a TV problem, I've seen it on 3 different sets. I don't know what else to say.. judging from other people's reviews this is just more of the same, but I want to make sure no one else buys this DVD players and gets the same problems.

Now I've got to go box up my GE1105P and take it back to Wal Mart from wence it came, and hope that they don't refurbish this abomination. Maybe I should take a hammer to it first eh? hehe :)

Strength:

gave me an appetite for DVD's

Weakness:

Skips often

The GE 1105 DVD player is an example of cheap electronics. This player skips at least 5 times a movie, and the frequency of skipping increases the longer the player is on. I find this very annoying, and believe it is a function of heat buildup and perhaps layer changing. GE does not make finding costumer service contacts easy, and based on the reviews below, the skipping is a design flaw of this particular unit. I have experienced every problem you can image. Received it as a give 12-26-00. Currently I am considering returning the unit. Recommend Philips DVD players. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS DVD PLAYER!

Strength:

Money, doesn't take much of it

Weakness:

NOT a quality feel, narrow working angle for the remote

I've had this unit for about a week. So far, only seen a couple of "frozen moments", nothing too objectionable. For $164.44 from WalMart, can't complain too much. Biggest bugaboo is that my a/v rack doesn't face directly toward the viewing position and the remote needs to be directly in front of unit to work. Overall, the unit does not project a quality "feel" but it does what it is intended to do: play movies. I had to return my $400 JVC 701 because of skips, freezing, other annoying habits. The JVC's audio seemed much better than the GE's - but I was using the built-in Dolby decoder in the JVC player instead of my receiver's. I'd recommend the GE unit for those who want to try DVD on a shoestring, but I'd prefer a Nakamichi or Pioneer Elite! hehe

Strength:

full-function universal remote

Weakness:

skipping, picture freeze, audio distortion

We got a 1999 model for Christmas, and immediately had problems with skipping. Within 2 months, the audio went away and was replaced with crackling static. Exchanged the unit for a 2000 model. The first DVD we tried played fine; the second starting freezing and skipping about 1.5 hours into the movie. Would not recommend this product.

Strength:

Price, quality of sound and picture, features.

Weakness:

Cheaper Dvd movies sometimes have pixel burps. Cannot play DVD roms or CDR/CDRW cd's.

For the sale price of $90 for a refurb, this cant beat DVD player is awesome.

It offers digital Dolby 5.1 surround sound, s-video, Video CD compatible.

A variety of features, excellent remote gives this DVD player a great value.

However, I would not pay >$199 for this. ~$90-$200 ok.

Strength:

Cheapest DVD player at the time
Black level adjustment
2x/4x/8x/32x forward/reverse
Multi-speed forward/reverse slow motion
Plays VCDs (but who cares, they look crappy)

Weakness:

Gets really hot - then the picture starts to do random pausing
Audio and video sometimes lose sync
Does not play CD-Rs
Only has optical 5.1 output

Really wanted to jump into DVD, so I bought this machine late in '99. Initially I was pleased, but since I don't watch DVDs too often, it's taken time for me to develop a disdain for this machine. Mine is the "upgraded" model (as referenced by stickers on the box) so it does play the Matrix, but you cannot get through the whole movie without the player doing this weird pausing behavior that makes the who experience unsatisfactory. Although, picture is generally good through both the S-Video and composite video ports...

Strength:

Low price, fast layer change, quiet transport.

Weakness:

Won't play CD-R audio discs, no component out.

I wasn't expecting much from this unit, but I was extremely poor at the time and it was what I could afford. After several months of extreme usage and my 155 DVD collection thrown at it multiple times, the only title that exhibits any problems is SPAWN (audio cuts out during credits). Even trouble-maker DVD's THE MATRIX and THE ABYSS both play flawlessly. Once my TV was properly calibrated with this unit, I found it to be very consistent for color and clarity. Layer changes aren't quite non-existant, but aren't long enough to be distracting. NOTE: This is the software updated version available at WalMart.
