Strength:

Price, easy to set up.

Weakness:

Made by LG Electronics (Goldstar).

Just purchased my new Go Video DVD/VCR combo today and it only took me less than five minutes to set up. The instruction book is easy to follow and so far no problem with skipping. I also found that the Go Video DVD/VCR combo is not made by Sensory Science. It is being manufactured by LG Electronics (Goldstar). No wonder many people have problems with skipping in dvd.

DVD player does not work properly. Returned first unit, second is not much better. Skips constantly, stops occasionally. Cleaning doesn't help. Don't even think about renting a dvd, it will ruin your evening.

Weakness:

Bugs and doesn''t work as advertised.

I guess I bought one of the returned and refurbished models. I wish I had seen this site before buying. My problem is that the VCR+ does work properly. It won''t let you remap the channels and just deflaults back to the original channels (won''t save). Also it has a very annoying trait that it won''t let you see the counter as you rewind/forward a tape at fast speeds.

Strength:

Compact space; all in one unit.

Weakness:

Price

It''s been approximately 5 months since I got the DVR5000 back from the SS (Radio Shack). So far NONE of the errors I experienced before (skipping, freezing, disk errors) are occurring. Post repair, this is a very good player. I just wish it had been this reliable without having to fork out an additional $100.

Strength:

What it''s supposed to do.

Weakness:

What it never does: Play tapes and DVD''s.

This is just a piece of crap. I''ve owned three since March of 2001. The first one ate a brand new video tape. I exchanged it for a new one. The second one''s DVD Player would freeze up half-way through the movie (infuriating!). The third one''s DVD Player just didn''t work at all. The only positive thing I can say is that the company, Sensory Science, never gave me any problems about returning the unit.

Strength:

Save space and works great. Simple setup with my satellite dish that allows me to record movies off satellite.

Weakness:

None. And I don''t work for GoVideo

I guess that I am the odd man out. I bought the DVR5000, brought it home and plugged it in and it has worked great for almost a year. It''s not there fault that my son jammed som plastic toy into the machine and I had to take it apart to get the plastic out. After that the DVD did not work which is why I am on the internet searching for either a low price on the DVR5000 or another model. I loved the thing and just wish my son hadn''t screwed it up.

Strength:

- I/O ports - Tactile, quality remote

Weakness:

- <7months total DVD operation - 125 channel max on VCR program record - Shambolic logic in certain remote control functions - "Known Defect" in DVD player - Unwillingness of Sensory Science to repair known fault

Quite shocked to see so many people on here, reporting same probs I have! If it''s a known defect, can''t something be done (yes, without the recommendation from SS of a $100+ Radio Shack bill!) Initially extremely pleased with the unit. Would have rated it 4.5/5. So why does it now deserve 1/5 overall? The unit, less than 7 months into light usage, developed the known disc skipping, Disk Error problem. Called SS who recommended Radio Shack repair ($100+). I consciously took a gamble at purchase time as I hadn''t heard of Go Video before. At $354 I expected a unit that would last longer than 7 months. Ideally SS should repair all these units - we all know the power of the spoken word on the internet nowadays and their reputation is totally shot in my book.

Strength:

Combination Unit, space saver

Weakness:

unintuitive remote

I purchased this unit even after reading about previously posted reviews here regarding DVD playback problems. I wasn't dissappointed; my unit experienced them as well. I took the unit in for repair ("Go Video" is now "Sensory Science")and the manufacturer acknowledged the known defect and repaired the unit FOC. The documented problem is with the optical pickup, which causes disc skipping at a fairly consistent place on the tracking bar (mine was between 1hr 06min and 1hr 20min). Since that time the unit has not experienced any additional problems. I also have not been able to play mp3 discs, but that is probably the feature I will use on this unit the least.

If you are looking for a way to consolidate VCR/DVD, and
possibly CD, this is a good unit. I imagine after a few years this will be perfect for the kids room as I upgrade my system again, for the space reasons alone. The DVD does have several nice options for playback, although the remote has an inconsistent feel between onscreen and button commands. The functions are there, you'll eventually find them.

Bottom Line: Above Average Product, convenience of multiple video players in one unit. Is current with all hookups: S Vid, 5.1, optical, etc. Good Value.
