Will not load dvd,s to memory properly. Must try to load 4 or 5 times to get the player to work properly. Do not buy at any price. Don't let my mistake be yours.

Strength:

At the time it was cheaper than the other models.

Weakness:

Piece of Junk. It skips on many DVD movies, drives me mad. It does not read "black VCD", and copied VCDs.

I bought this at Bleeker Stereo, not a good place either, salesman was a liar, did not honour his words. Quit going to that place after that.

Strength:

What strengths, it only had them for 7 months.

Weakness:

Everything about it is weak, in my book if the damn thing doesn't work for atleast a year, it is total junk, thrash it...

I got this for christmas this past year, and 3 months ago it stopped working. One day it will work, most days it will not. Some DVDs will not play at all. Full warranty runs out after 3 months, will only pay for parts upto a year. I checked into getting it repaired and was told that the minium cost for labor was $100, I can buy another DVD player for that much almost. This is a piece of junk, don't buy thi at all.

none yet, but you can count on me buying a different DVD player of a different brand.

Strength:

Phenomenal Picture and great sound

Weakness:

Can be overly noisy if you skip loads of chapters quickly :-)

I have found this to be an excellent player, I have had no problems with it (even with rental disks) at all.

I recently upgraded the firmware to ersion 4.03 and I'm not sure, but I think layer cahnging time has actually reduced! Great!

I would reccomend this to anyone, especially if they have an external surround sound processor, the picture is amazing for the price.

Loads up pretty fast, Simple remote, user-friendly menu

Weakness:

My first unit...was DOA (Dead on Arrival) so, I went back to Sams Mart and got a new one! no problems what so ever!

I, too read the Consumer Reports article about this particular DVD player. I almost burned my magazine after the first unit wouldn't work. but, the next day I got another one and I've had it for a year now. no problems what so ever!!...sure! it skips when I have a Blockbuster rented DVD in it...(doesn't anyone ever take care of their DVD's?) I tested the capabilities of this DVD with The Phantom Menace I ...excellent, excellent testing DVD. and The Eagles, When Hell Freezes Over DVD. Good player I like it.

Weakness:

It doesn't read the disk most of the time. Blocks in the middle.

We bought this product a year ago. After 1 or 2 months, it starts to have reading problem. Since it's still under warrenty, we had it repaired. They send us a new unit instead of repairing it. Then, after 3 months, same problems occured. We don't want to waste money to repair it. Don't buy this product, it's garbage.

Strength:

Unit makes a solid "whump" noise when sharply struck on top. Zoom.

Weakness:

Other than the general existance of the machine: Skips, hangs, shows pixelly images and totally locks up more times than not.

This machine has been nothing but trouble from day one. It is noisy and I have come to find that the lack of controls on the front panel is somewhat annoying.

Other than the nice negative comments, I have some rather large issues with this machine. It hangs, skips, screws up images and (most annoying) totally locks up about 60% of the way through most movies. I'm not talking about rented, scratched, warped disks here, I am talking about brand-new out of the shrink-wrap new DVDs. The machine can't properly play a new disk, so you can imagine my frustration in trying to get new disks to play.

The machine would not even offer to read an audio CD.

At my wits end, I called Hitachi technical support. They were somewhat helpful and customer service was fairly helpful. However, the customer service center that they sent me to locally has been a joke. They have had my unit for over two months now and they can't seem to get the right part, they're too busy, they're out on a service call, yada, yada, yada.

Do yourself a favor, buy a Sony or Panasonic. Even if Hitachi has improved things in a later model, it is not worth the risk.

Strength:

Good Video, Good Audio

Weakness:

LOUD (you can hear the dvd spinning even w/the volume turned up)

I bought this unit while still in college becuase at the time it was the most affordable DVD player recieving a favorable review in consumer reports. I found the video quality (s-video hookup to Zenith 27'' TV) and audio quality (digital coax to Onkyo TSDX-484) to be quite good. The problem is that the damn DVD spins so loudly that it ruins the experience. I had it in a small room at school and have since moved it to a larger room where it is less irritating. I have replaced it with a sony, which I love so far. The remote is also a bit weak, but luckily I have a learning universal.

Playing anything

Firt dvd player... started skipping right away so I didn't know it wasn't normal. Should have returned it, but gave it another shot, well, then it quit working all together, wouldn't read anything. Circuit City said I could only return items in the first 30 days, to contact Hitachi. Called Hitachi, got the number for a local repair company they want more to fix it than what I paid for it!

Long story short- went out and bought a Sony.

None so far??

Haven't had any problems with this player as of yet. Has skipped a few times on some scratched rented DVD's, but all brand new discs and the majority of rented discs have played without flaw. Not sure why others are having so many problems.
