Strength:

When it works good picture and sound

Weakness:

Does not play many DVD's. Locks up in middle of many DVD's. Very frustrating.

I have owned my DVP305U for almost a year. Like many others I figured it would be a quality product since it had the Hitachi name. BIG MISTAKE! Don't buy this one folks. Locks up for not reason, won't read many disks, and skips alot. This thing is Sh.....t! Smiles. I wasted my money. Next time I will read the reviews here. Wish I had found this site earlier. Oh well. Good day people....cheers.....Danny :)

I will be trying Sony or Panasonic.

Strength:

easy to use; brand; excellent picture/sound decoding, componant out, optical and rca digital out,

Weakness:

too many controls on remote only

This became my second DVD player and by far my favorite, the control is small and comfortable if you aren't using a unified remote, I haven't had any real decoding problems to speak of, occassionally I'll get a momentary hang-up of less than 1/2 a second if I'm careless and don't clean the disk before viewing...this is always remidied by wiping the disks before hand...for the price I was well satisfied...

Strength:

Easy to use & pretty setup menu, sound, zoom, pause between layer changes very brief.

Weakness:

Picture quality pixelated.

I had a hard time letting go of this player. It has great features and runs very well. The setup menu is a thing of beauty. Very well thought out and very pretty. The picture however I found to be pixalated, too clear. I could clearly see the lines on my TV. Even if I set the sharpness all the way down. I set it up with S-Video on my Sony TV. When I returned it, even the lady at the Customer Service desk said that it is not a very good machine. They have had it returned many times. I don't recommend it. Get the Pioneer 333.

Strength:

looks real good, good price, midnight mode is good, nice looking remote

Good machine for the price, I had no problem with my unit so far. I watch about 4-5 dvd per week and it skipped two times on rented dvd,but the fault was the disk. I recommend it for people like me who are starting to build a home cinema but don't have tons of money.

Strength:

picture and sound are okay, components output, Hitachi brand

Weakness:

remote, look(cheap), lot of problems...

It was my first DVD. As a lot of difficulties while passing into chapters (pictures jams), picture sometimes freeze in digital blocks, and the voice channel doesn't want to start often (have to restart). A good quality of picture yet, but too troubles to considering this unit as a reference. Try Panasonic, a real Japan product who, I wish, will last for ever!!!

processor

First bought an RCA 5215. Now that was a mistake. After serious operational problems with that unit, I took it back and went on the search for a new unit. Tried a Kenwood(303) and would have bought had they any available. As it was the time of a changerover in stock, I ended up with the Hitachi model. I guess that I have been very lucky as I have only had a problem with 2 dvd's. One was very badly scratched, and I don't know the reason for the other. Other problems I have experienced are slow processor switching between menus, remote not funtioning as well as it should and a pause when the unit switches layers, usually around the 53 min point on dvd. Over all, can't complain about the operation, but can't help feel as if the unit is extremely cheap, and I do wonder about how long to unit will last.

Last word: From what I've read, this unit, as well as the Samsung 611 (same model? Same features and similiar look, similiar problems) isn't the most stable dvd player out there. It is head and shoulders above the RCA model, but can't help feeling that I should have waited for the Kenwood model. At any rate, spend more, get more, and try not to gamble on this product, cuz even if it works, you'll always wonder for how long.
