Strength:

nice picture and sound

Weakness:

wont play and format besides dvd

this dvd player is just bad. it is WAY too expensive for what it offers. personally, i have not had any problems with skipping or freezing, so i guess that is a plus. but it will not read dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+r, dvd+rw, cd-r, cd-rw,or photo cd. It is labeled as a dvd/video cd player but it just says No Disc when i try to play one of my own VCDs burned to cd-r. the picture and sound quality is acceptable, but almost all of the other JVC dvd players read cd-r, including the ones that cost only 70 bucks! there is no reason to buy this dvd player.

Player did not work when first received and had to send it in to be repaired. Had a parental control problem, and audio problem, and just plain wouldn't play. When it was returned from jVC for repairs it had a rattle in it, but did play and played well. Put a dvd in last night and now is failing again. I don't think I will purchase another jvc product. When I called JVC about the problem they were VERY quick to offer me 50.00 off a new one. HMMMMM, could it be that they are aware of the problem???????????

Strength:

Audio and visuals are great. Excellent saturation of colours and true blacks. Solid. Good remote.

Weakness:

A bit big.

i bought this player at a big, blow-out sale where everything was half-price. Being that this retails for $450, I thought that it was too good to pass up at CDN$250. I didn't really research DVD players before buying but went on JVC's good reputation for equipment (I had a stereo by them). I am happy to say that I've had it for 2 years now and it works great. I'm really surprised by the number of people here with severe problems. Maybe I was lucky? I guess JVC has some work to do to get it all right.

Strength:

When it''s working there are no Problems

Weakness:

Will not play certain DVD''s Needs Product Addemdum to show the Consumer how to reset the EEPROM

I purchased this product because I already had the Editing Deck JVC offers for 399.00 Circuit City Electronic. It was the HS-4500U It worked for a few month then I had to ship it off for repairs. When I bought a DVD Player it worked for afew months and then refused to play all DVD''s except Austin Powers first movie. I got in contact with JVC in Atlanta, GA and they told me that the EEprom needed to be reset. So I listen to what they said and it work. Dvd''d are computers and they sometimes reset them selve''s at least the JVC''s Call your JVC Rep for the Instructions at the Service department in GA

Strength:

nice screen saver feature, good menu system, good sound and picture for the $$$.

Weakness:

poor customer support, system locks up frequently requiring e-prom reset.

I would call this a nice entry level DVD player,HOWEVER, there are glitches with this machine and with JVC's customer support system that make owning this DVD player a frustrating experience.

On my player, when using the pause function, about half of the time a frame screen would show. In addition, I had trouble with several movies, including "White Squall", which would require an e-prom reset or this and other movies would not play. I will use this machine in my bed room ONLY because I'm reluctant to sell it to anyone I know. I printed the e-prom re-set instructions from the JVC website because they are needed a lot.

A lot of people feel this machine is a good value based on the number of features and low price. Value, to me, is based on if the machine performs as promised, and if I receive good service from the retailer and the manufacturer. With this player, neither of these things occured.

I called JVC's published customer service line twice. Both times, after being on hold for several minutes, I recieved a message that the system was too busy and it disconnected the call. I wasn't able to talk with a human either time. I e-mailed them with a description of the problems I had with the machine, and I did not recieve a response to my e-mail. I e-mailed them again, a week later, with an update to the problems I was having, and again did not recieve a response.

Unless JVC corrects the operational problems with this machine and learns that customer service involves COMMUNICATING with their customers, this is a player I would not recommend.

Strength:

Great picture, Composite video out, Nice and simple remote, compatible with rest of JVC equipment, price

Weakness:

None I can yet think of.

I bought the 511 from Circuit City @ $300 last November. I don't have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver yet, so I can't really judge on the sound quality. The picture looks awesome (viewed on a JVC 32" TV). I like the remote. It is small and simple to use, as any remote should be. I noticed it is hard (very slow) to browse through the Matrix menu, as mentioned by other reviewers, but I believe this is not due to the reader itself, but to the DVD (the complexity of the graphics/sounds in the background of the menu probably takes any reader longer to react).
To summarize, if any 511 plays like mine, you cannot go wrong with this model. Furthermore, I do not believe in spending too much money on a CD or DVD player (they all send the same numeric signal to the receiver!). Save your bucks for good speakers or receivers: these are the ones that can make a big difference in the hifi chain.

Strength:

Great value. Composite and optical outputs. Zoom. Simulated surround surround sound. One touch remote for most features.

Weakness:

Remote controls TV and DVD only. Front panel is distracting. Player itself is very big.

This player has everything you could need. DD and DTS. RCA, S-Video, component and optical outputs. The front-panel display went out on my RCA so I upgraded it to the JVC and overall I'm very pleased. It has alot of bells and whistles but most importantly the picture and sound are great. Also, if you haven't gone with a surround sound system yet, the simulated surround sound effect is very good.

On the down side, there is no way to turn off the front panel display which has a rotating DVD icon flashing while the movie is playing (although you can dim it). The remote itself is very good for watching DVD's (one touch operations), but it's not universal. Finally, the player itself is bigger than any other player I've seen, but it is not unattractive.

I would highly recommend this unit because of the flexibility it gives you with all the best video outputs and the fact that it sounds good even in stereo.

Strength:

Do not need a remote to use all features of player as it has buttons mounted on the front.

Weakness:

It was more expensive than most. The dealer had 5 of them in his markdown section on return, this is the only model he has ever had to take back, and he had to take back all 5!! The stupid thing hangs during movies and you have to unplug it to reset it. The dealer said all of his on the floor do the same thing...regularly.

Hind sight is 20/20. You've heard the phrase "I could of had a V8"...I could had the Toshiba or the Panasonic (like my friends and salesperson told me to) but I didn;t....
I quickly grew tired of having to unplug and re-plug my machine into the wall to reset it after locking up in the middle of a movie. How annoying is that? I brought it back to the dealer (LEON'S) and showed them what it was doing. They even gave me a new one...which did the same thing!!!!. I finally switched to the Toshiba 2109.
Now I am satisfied. No glitches or errors..and I saved $30.00cdn!!

Strength:

Easy, quiet, reliable...

Weakness:

None yet.

This unit has proved most reliable and most satisfactory both musically and videologically (there's a word!) By the way, simply unplugging the unit DOES NOT reset the computer. There is a specific set of instructions on the JVC web site on how to do this, though I've not had to attempt this.
I've played most of what I can rent, plus a few titles I've bought, and frpm Private Ryan to The Matrix I've had no worries... For music, this piece is quite indeed -- transport wise and electronics wise.
