Strength:

Sharp image. Multifunctional. Good jvc build and component quality. Optical cable and dts ready.

Weakness:

none

I received this dvd player as a gift. I already had an rca dvd player but wanted to upgrade. All I can say is that this dvd player is truly amazing. It's up to par with most dvd players in it's class including toshiba and them some! The image is crystal clear and the audio is definitely high end. I have this unit hooked up to a newcastle r925 dolby digital reciever and it perfoms above the norm. The true optical cable readout is amazing. For movies i believe it's better sounding than the movie theaters. I don't know why it got such a poor rating on audireview.com. I haven't found one thing wrong with this unit. It plays all cds and dvds very, very well. Maybe to all those people that didn't like the sound and image of this dvd player you should check out the equipment you're using. In order to get great results you have to have better than adequate to good equipment. Overall an excellent dvd/cd player. Until new technology comes out in the not so distant future i'll be sticking with my jvc 511 dvd/cd player!

I recently bought this player to replace a defective Pioneer 525 (replacement for the 414). The features are great, and despite only having a toslink digital connection, DTS and DD were both available. However, compared to the picture quality of the Pioneer, it can't compare.I played Blade, Bad Boys, The Mummy, Austin Powers and a couple others, and of them all, Blade for some reason looked the sharpest. However, just as a test, I unpacked the Pioneer (again), and even though the faulty product 'warped' the picture about every 10 seconds, the picture looked even better.
This is the only reason why I am returning the JVC. For the price ($329 at Crutchfield), and the features, it wins hands down for a budget player. If I had never seen the Pioneer picture, The JVC would have been the s@!t!

Strength:

Styling, build quality, sound and video -- excellent!

Weakness:

None.

Plays everything I've thrown at it... Private Ryan, etc smooth, no problems. Very quiet transport, which I need for some of my classical audio tracks. Whisper quiet. Great picture and the effects I've used, I've liked.

Strength:

Worked ok for first year, all discs played fine.

Weakness:

Big, clunky, discs don't play!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems that all newer dvd's are not playing in this player, I don't know if they've done something different in the manufacture of new dvds but they won't work.

We have a big collection of dvds and all work fine from a year or more ago, any new ones crap out. What gives???

Strength:

S-Video, Component-Video, JVC CompuLink, Digital Out

Weakness:

Sound does not start right away.

Have had the JVC 511 for 2 years and it continues to go strongly. The only problems I've had are with short sound bites when a title or track starts - I miss the first 0.3 seconds of sound. The Matrix DVD also has a slowdown on the menu sequence. All other DVDs have worked wonderfully.
Very Happy.
Good as a startup DVD player. Not for those looking for a high-end product.

Piece of crap that falls apart after 12 months!

Stopped working after 12 months. Only used occasionally for playing DVDs. After research it is apparent that JVC consistently makes DVD players that fall apart after a few months. Furhtermore, JVC will do absolutely nothing to make their customers satisfied.

Strength:

Component Video is better, optical digital sound out is better.

Weakness:

Minor freezing during movie play, if a small adjustment helps I'm willing to tinker.

The 511 was better than the 501 "out of box" model the store had. The 501 froze, broke up and refused to work at all, it was an early model and the more recent one is different. My 511 will usually hesitate in the middle of a movie or an 1hr or so in but in video only and for less than a second or two. I have it hooked up via Component Video to a 27" D-series JVC and the picture is great. Audio goes optical into a RX-6000V reciever and is very noticable over conventional RCA connections in definition.

None, I've found JVC quality to be good over all.

Strength:

Side view capabilities, low level outputs, 5.1 Dolby didgital Surround sound.

Weakness:

DVD would play some discs for a while and then the screen would digitally break up and the movies would freeze. Some discs will come up no disc in the display and others would continuous read. Does not read CDR's or MPEG-1 files.

After reading sveral e-opinions I came to long term conclusion that there has to be a trim/bias pot on the laser eye for some sort of calibration.

Well after getting the run around like fellow customers have I deciced to take a chance at findind the pot. Let me tell you it paid off. After careful inspection of the laser I noticed the pot was under neith the feed tray. Knowing that turning a variable to the right increses the function of the component I wook a well educated guess and turned the pot 1/2 turn clockwise.

My guess and paitance paid off. All the movies and cd roms that started to fail during play, as well as the movies that couldn't even be read are running up with no errors.
Some movies are still having problems, but these are the movies that are being recalled for technical dificulties.

I hope my input helps you with figuring out what to do with your JVC XV511 DVD player.

Strength:

Sound is crystal clear. Picture is great!

Weakness:

Remote is a bit tricky, but you learn to deal with it.

I would buy another one of these machines. I have no problems reading DVDs with it. I did alot of research before buying it and was very pleased once I started using it. We have watched many movies... no skipping, no problems loading or freezing up, etc.

Someone said they had to STOP it to goto the bathroom and then "restart the movie"... I use PAUSE for these short trips instead of restarting the movie.

The remote is a bit cluttered... and may be even considered non-user-friendly to some extent, but not annoying enough that I would give up the console because of it.

Overall, I'm very happy... if you can get one of these things for $200 or so, do it!
