Strength:

picture quality, features

Weakness:

frezzes to the point of unplugging. randomly frezzes on same movie, differant points of same movie, then will play same movie with only a minor glitch, here and there. Has a mind of it's own. FRUSTRATING. slow to read and go thru menus.

Great picture, great options.
Other than having a great picture, what use is it when you want to show a really good film as The Green Mile to my parents when you have to get up and unplug it every 12- 15 minutes and wait eons to wait for it to load again and search out where you left off. Does this thing have an old commador 64 prossesor in it (maybe a refurbished one)!
Sorry but most of the rave reviews for this thing are in the first 3 months.
Which I had no problems with......until the ole 90 days rolls around and POOF! all of a sudden it randomly picks different times and places on the disk to take a dump...
These are all brand new , clean disks that are handled very carefully and the once flawlessly played matrix, 5th element, green mile, ect., no longer behaved.
Lately I have expeirnced shodey behavior of other jvc products and wonder if they are on their way to becoming the next Yugo, (runs pretty good for 3 months and then dies)??
This is not hate mail in any way, I was turned on by the specs, marketing hype and performance. Which I got.....for 3 months, after that It's not worth the hassel. I gave it to a freind?? of mine and let him deal with it.
Back to a good ole generic phillips.
I don't work or have interests in any of these products (check out my review on the jvc 9600 svhs recorder, 4.5 out of 5)I'm just frustrated and glad to rid myself of this product.
By the way, have you looked at sites that sell refurbs, I see nothing but 523's....go figure.
If you happen to get a good one,I"M JEALOUS, becauce when this player played, it was great. Good sound in 5.1 as well as dts (although I have a Yamaha) the picture is great when you get it.
With all seriousness, I might have got a lemmon.
If you get a good one keep it, if you get a bad one , put it in the juicer and relieve yourself of the headaches...

Strength:

everything

Weakness:

for this price absolutely none

At this price you cannot get a better DVD player. I also have the sony DVD palyer that matchs the wega tv which cost 2 and a half times more and i cant find a difference between the two. All the people that said they have problems with it skipping, well its never happened to me, and ive used it every single day for about 5 months now. For those of you looking for a great DVD player wit a small price tag this is definitely the one for you.

Strength:

picture/sound quality
price
plays different types of discs

Weakness:

picture freezes/skips for 1 or 2 seconds (two occasions)
unlit remote
only 1 level of zoom which is too big and blurry

Apart from the rare freezing up of the picture, unlit remote and limited zoom feature, I am very pleased with the performance of the JVC 523. If the freezing up problem is not resolved I may return the unit to the store. Maybe I'm easy to please but I would recommend the 523 to anyone buying their first dvd player. If I paid $1000 or more I would want nothing less than perfection. At around $200, this is the best buy I could find. From reading your reviews, it is plain to see that occasionally a lemon DVD player will find its way off the assembly line and into the consumer's home. This should not be a reason to condemn the entire line. I recommend buying your DVD player, whatever the brand, from a store which has at least a 30 day refund/exchange policy. You could go through 2 or 3 players as I did before you find one you like.

Strength:

Reads CD-R and CD-RW. Good picture quality. Gold finish

Weakness:

Remote could be smaller. No Backlite

I purchased the XV-512BK a week prior to buying the 523GD. The remote on the 512BK frequently didn't work. Couldn't do anything with it. It drove me bonkers! I returned the player after watching a couple of movies. Otherwise, I was satified with everything else for the money I paid for the player. I figured it was probably a defective remote that I came across since a couple of my friends told me that they didn't have any problem with theirs.

I went and bought 523GD a week after and the machine works beautifully. The 523GD cost a little more than the 521BK but they look identical. I checked their specs and I couldn't find any differences. If anyone knows what the difference is between the 521BK and the 523GD other than their colour finish, drop me an email.

Strength:

Nice look.

Weakness:

If you can find one that works, the player only plays DVD ok and does not do a good job with other media.

I bought JVC DVD player, brought it home and placed the first DVD into the drive, hit play and the screen came up with the movie menu and locked up. I tried another DVD, nothing . . . the player said "no disc" so I tried another. After trying 5 DVD discs one worked but was very choppy and kept freezing up. I took the player back and exchanged for the same player, no problem at all on the replacement. Not a real good player, quite limited but I bought it because it looked nice with all my "real" audio components that are by Yamaha and also have the metalic face plates. I guess I just hate the common black color and this DVD player was all the store had in metalic and not the boring generic black color. I know you get what you pay for, and this was a very cheap deck so I should not complain, I will put out the $$ and get a hi-end player.

Strength:

Reliability. Has played all formats (DVD, CD and CD-R) and all features have worked perfectly. Appearance; gold color is cool.

Weakness:

None so far.

This is my first DVD player and so far I'm quite pleased. I selected this model after much research and overall good reviews in Audioreview.com and have not been disappointed. I have it hooked-up to a new 32" Sony and the picture and sound quality are excellent. Although I haven't invested in surround sound just yet this unit has all possible outputs that exist.

I mostly just play, pause, rewind, and forward but I have played around with most of the special effects and they worked just fine. I have played DVD, CD and CD-r formats and all have worked perfectly; no experience with skipping as others have mentioned. Remote can be more user friendly but as mentioned I don't use it alot and besides most remotes can be deisgned better/simpler.

I'd highly recommend this unit as it has all audio and video features and input/outputs that most people will need and use, and the picture and sound quality are excellent. For the price (less than $200) it's a great value. There are less expensive DVD players out there but they don't come close to matching the specs on this model. On the other hand, if you're willing to spend alot and/or are an audiophile this unit may not be what you're looking for.

remote, sound, takes long time to read the toc

although this product gave a better picture then both, it took a while to read the dvd, and the sound was noticeable not as good as both the panasonic and the pioneer.
but for the price it is a very good dvd player, and as far as the problems that are said it has ran very smooth
all and all it seems nice budget playerand stand out among other componets
