Strength:

Sound and Picture seems pretty good. Has some nice on screen menus and things, but that's no big deal.

Weakness:

Remote control is like something you'd expect to find at the bottom of a (cheap) box of cereal.

In all fairness, I don't have much to compare this DVD player to since it is my first one.

That being said, I have had absolutely no problems of any kind since I've purchased it. All of my current DVDs are Dolby Digital, so I haven't tried a DTS one yet, but I plan on ordering Saving Private Ryan in DTS so I'll check it out then.

Since this is my first DVD player, all I can say is that compared to what I'm used to (VHS) the picture and sound are great. I have a Marantz SR7000 on the way along with the Polk Audio RM7500 speakers, so I should be able to annoy the neighbors somewhat (I live in a townhouse) when they arrive.

I bought this player because most of the reviews were decent and listed only minor problems (mainly the remote). The consistency of the freeze-ups seeemed like it was a problem that had been corrected, and so far I think that is the case. Also, there was a Power Buy on this at Mercata and I had the (then) $25 first time buyer rebate with free shipping...I think I paid just under $315 for it overall. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase.

Strength:

Neat design. Remote works well with other JVC stuff.

Weakness:

Cost (although mine was a gift).

DVD Player locks up after distortions and digital read failures on certain titles. Unreliable. When it plays a title, it looks great and sounds terrific. I have a number of JVC products in my home including VCR, TV, and Receiver. But my last two purchases of JVC equipment have convinced me not to buy JVC again.

Strength:

Excellent sound, and video, also sound excellent when playing audio cd's

Weakness:

None that i've found so far.

So far I've had no problems with this unit, I think it is superior to alot of the units out there in sound quality especially. It's pretty amazing to me when i read thru alot of the other reviews alot of these people who pick on the remote, I mean, WHO CARES !!!, i don't buy products because of the remote, as long as it operates the unit. But all in all, i've been extremely satisfied with this unit. Oh, and I have not experienced any of the video freeze, or lock-up either.

Strength:

Video Adjmt Features: VFP (Video Fine Picture) Allows selection of Sharp, Normal, Soft or Manual picture settings.
Digest: Twelve Video 1st-Scene/picture of each chapter can be selected (This feature I have not seen on other DVD-Players, you must go to the DVD's disc Scene selection, that is if the disc has one) The "EXPERT" 5.1 Audio setting
is nice (i.e....a Bass mngmt faeture) The color/sound quality is excellent given the price of the player.
A Screen-Saver saves the TV-tube from early "burn-out.
The GUI-screen allows viewing/adjustments of DVD. Oh, the A/V Compulink feature is "Smart" With a 3.5-pin wire-connection to my JVC-AV-D500 T.V. Place a DVD in the player, press "Play" and TV comes on, sets the TV to the assigned Video-2 setting (Also will Auto-set your JVC Receiver) and starts playing. When done, press Power-off of DVD and all other JVC devices turn-off, outstanding....

Weakness:

Since my March-99 purchase 4x my picture has frozen, and JVC list procedures how too correct this(turn off/on DVD this resets the DVD-player) OK, JVC why not repair the DVD before we the consumer has to experince this.
The Jog-stick sometimes must be pressed twice to function.

Overall a good buy/DVD-Player.
The DVD features described above,
picture(450+ horizontal lines)quality and
JVC's A/V-Compulink.

Strength:

Excellant Sound and Picture

Weakness:

Has frozen once or twice on some DVDs

I received this DVD player as a gift this past christmas and was thrilled with the picture and sound quality. I have not yet invested in a home theater system, but for the time being, the virtual surround sound works very well. I especially like the ability to adjust the sound and picture to my tastes. In regards to the remote, I have no real complaints. It would be nice if it was backlit, but I learned the button placement very quickly. It is true that sometimes the player responds slowly to the remote.

When I first tried to play Saving Private Ryan, the player would not read it. This was odd considering I have a DVD-ROM computer that had no trouble reading it. Eventually I found the JVC website and after following their instructions, I have had no problems with that disc since. I wish I could say my problems ended there, but I have had other minor problems as well. On occassion, I have been unable to access the menu. This happened when I rented Forces of Nature and once after watching all of the Matrix. Overall this is not a problem and has only happened a few times. Lastly, while watching the Thomas Crown Affair, the disc did freeze on the widescreen side.

Despite these problems, overall I am very happy with the machine. However, time will tell the true value because if the problems escalate then I woould not be able to recommend the player. I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt because I have played over twenty DVDs on it and generally had no problems.

Strength:

Easy hook-up, clear pic and sound great joystick remote, K2 interface to remove ripples and jitter(AWSOME!!)

Weakness:

only one loading tray

This is my first DVD player and I happy that I didn't choose anything else. The K2 interface really makes a difference from the Sony brands. The price was alittle bit more than I excepted but it was worth it! JVC #1

Strength:

digital decoder and dts decoder

Weakness:

poor instructions

I put in a review a month after we purchased this dvd player and I liked it then. It is now close to a year that we have own this player. Only one time did we have to reset the dvd
player by unpluging it,and I belive that was my fault. It has played every dvd we put in it over 100+,with no promlems at all. I still would give it 5 stars. It has played every dvd that some other below have had promlems with. I have owned other Dvd players they do not in the least compare with this one. For the price, I know we did not go wrong with this dvd player!

Lousy instructions how to set up 5.1 to reciver

Larry and I paid same price at same place. Was looking at Panasonic A320 or the JVC DVD Player. Our other dvd player was having promlems skiping on a few dvds Waiting to sent that one to replace chip. Did my resurch and decided on the JVC DVD Player. So far it plays all my DVDS with no promlem. The only thing that I did not like was the instructions on how to set up 5.1 to reciver. Did not have as bad a promlem with the samsung 907. I finally went out and purchased a optical Fiber cable that made it very easy to set up. Looking forward to see how dts plays on the dvd player. As of now will give it 5 stars. We will see how it plays in 12 months.

Strength:

Good picture

Weakness:

poor reliability

Only had it 5 days when it broke. When it was working, it was great, but that was for a very short period. It first displayed "no disk" when a disk was inserted, then after a while, the display would not appear at all, it just stayed in standby mode.

I was not using one of the disks that are known to lock up this player.
