This was the very first DVD unit I tried and I loved it. I returned it because I expected it to read my cdr disks(little did I know). If I had it to do all over again, I may have kept it. I ended up settling for a pana120u(which still doesn't read my cdr disks). Honestly, I didn't need built in decoder and a few of the features at a $500 price tag. However, I consider this a quality unit. I auditioned it for 17days and had no complaints. It seems like spending money on a DVD with decoder is obselete unless using seperates or 'digital ready' equipment. Do not feal bad for owning this unit. It is as good as anything in the price range and much better than some. I am giving it 5* because some of the reviews are not quite fair and this unit deserves some respect. It has great features and not some of the drawbacks of other units.

Strength:

Great picture. Great sound. Low price.

Weakness:

Cheap remote.

Set this up with my new Denon AVR-3300, Acoustic Research speakers (P315HO mains, CS25HO center, P310HO surrounds). Hooked it up with optical sound cable and color stream video cables. Wow! I tried my old Sony CD player and the JVC was much better at playing music CDs. This is probably a function of the CD player (old, mid-range) and interconnects - it doesn't take much to understand that a fiber optic connection is going to be quieter, but in addition to lowering noise levels the dynamic range seems improved, the old Sony sounded really flat in comparison.

DVD image is beautiful, really crisp and clear. The unit can be bought at UBid for pretty low prices, depending on the particular auction.

Strength:

great looks price picture qualitya

Weakness:

remote(no backlighting)

I have watched approx 12 movies so far only had about 1.5months but no problems so far. The Matrix had a spot which at exactly 59 mins. would lock up but cleaned disc and still did it so advanced 1 chapter and played perfect. 1 rental disc looked like a 2 yr. child had played outside with it and never once missed a spot on this disc it amazed me it was unreal how this disc looked with scratches. Any way do not use for music I have a very nice audio system for that hobby. I have an older Pioneer RPTV, Denon 2400 (use JVC701 decoder)Paradigm minimontiors, Paradigm 350 cc and Paradigm PS1000 sub. Looks and sounds fine to me. Started to consider the Sony 550d but after reading audioreview comments I changed my mind but I did buy extended ser. contract for piece of mind.

Strength:

Superb picture, Amazing audio, no glitches commonly found in players in this price range

Weakness:

Bad remote, poor looking menu screen

For the 400 dollars I payed for this player (not an auction, I was inpatient), this is an incredible player. I have tested a couple of DVD players at a local HiFi store, ranging from the A120 to the sony 7700, and this seems like the best price/performance ratio. Granted, I have only had the DVD player for a couple of days now so I can't testify to its reliability, but for all the movies I have watched only one problem came up (a half second delay in saving private ryan for the layer switch). The matrix played beautifully. The picture is artifact free, and the sound is similar to the ultra high end players. I would highly recommend this player to anyone seeking a mid range DVD player that is incredibly cheap (ubid). I'll post again if I have problems, but for now this player, especially considering the price/performance value, is one of the best on the market.

After looking around for a good DVD player, I selected the JVC 701 for both price and performance. After using it for several months now, I'm still very happy with my selection. In fact, I now also use it as my primary audio CD player!

Strength:

Great Picture (as long as the unit is working)

Weakness:

it doesn't work most of the time

I bought this unit back in June from 800.com for $449 ;$305(after a 10% discount and $100 in free movies I chose). In less than a month of having it, i started experiencing problems. some movies that played before stopped playing. The audio was off, also the picture would pause and was digitizing. The man at the JVC service center I later took it to, called it "Pixel-breakup"...well anyway after about 2 weeks they called me and told me to pick it up I hooked it back up and it has been working fine, until yesterday.
I put the movie "Instinct" in it and it will not play. I put another movie in and it played fine the 1st time but the second time i watched it more pixel-breakup and pausing..I'm getting sick of this sh*t.
so I am going to take it back to the service center 2morrow.
Has anyone else had this problem???

this gets a 3 because of one too many problems

Strength:

tons of features. easy to use. lots of information. control from deck or remote.

Weakness:

menu's look cheesy after a little bit. burshed metal looks like a warez bbs, the zoom function is useless

This is an underrated player. It plays fine for me. i havent had it very long (1 month) but it works so far on all the titles I have throw at it. It sounds good. It play's CDs and stuff with no problem. I think the joystick works WONDERFULLY. It does however access the disc slower than the high end ones. Complex menus can make it slow down a bit. Other than that.. everything seeems to be implemented well. Gold connectors , complete ooutput options

I wanted a zooom , so i got this oover the sony 7700. the zoom sucks really bad. useless. even for seeeing tiny details. its for making the letterbox big so u can do you own pan and scan. which is lame. They should have the zoom so you can zoom in on details. what a waste. I see why sony didnt boother with a zoom function. Other than that.. the picture and sound and functionality was comparable to the sony 7700.. for less money and a better remote.
Plus you can lose the remote and still use the unit! You can dim the unit froom the menus. I havent figured out how to do it from the remote during a movie.

701 BK! great machine.. very little about it on the net in terms of reviews..

for value.. 5 stars. jam packed with features for a regular price.. ($400 or less)

for overall 4 stars: internal setup menus are cheesy looking. I would perfer spartan if you cant get cool right.
(i guess you cant blame them , the JVC web site looks like crap!)

if you want a player that can play everything wiithout trouble and setup easy with everything working.. (surround sound , dts , whatever , component video outs , s-video , regular outs.. optical outs.. etc) this may be the player for you.

Strength:

Great picture, sound

Weakness:

Joystick remote not very sensitive sometimes. The [enter] button is the actually joystick. Therefore, not pressing straight down will move the selection.

Overall, a great DVD player. I have not hooked it up to a real home theater system yet. But I have played over 100 discs with no problems except for a bit of lip sync problems with Maverick. Anyone else with this problem?

Strength:

Nice look, Graphical User Interface

Weakness:

Unreliable

Got this player in March from Crutchfield. Picture quality is good. Sound quality is acceptable.

After three months of normal use (2 or 4 movies monthly) the player started to skip. The problem got worst until it was imposible to see a complete movie.

A friend bought the same player and is having the same problem.

I cannot recommend such an unreliable product. One star seems to be more than enoght for something that is not working at all.
