Strength:

Superb interlaced picture - exceptional dvd audio sound - smooth operation - looks great - price

Weakness:

very poor remote ergonomics

This JVC is a superb performer! If you have a decent monitor, as well as rec/amp,cables,and speakers including pwr.sub you will not be disapointed in the sound quality of this player. If you are using poor quality equiptment, including all cables you might as well forget this and any other dvd audio player, as the end result will be poor sound.I have played 5 dvd audio disc. Each disc without doubt is amazing.Sound is crystal clear, hugh sound stage, and you know that this is not a cd or a 6 channel audio dvd. Point is its the best sound to date and you can tell without looking at the disc that this is dvd audio.with good equiptment and proper set up in all areas you've got the best. This JVC does the job and the other players coming out will probably do the job too.But as for here and now this player, for around $450, is the one to beat.In regular audio reproduction thru coax or analog its par with other similar priced players.

As for video performance in the interlaced mode, it is about as good as it gets. This is my 6th dvd player as well as my other player (panasonic dvd-rv30).I have had Panasonic,Pioneer,Toshiba and Sony. All were very good in video presentation with the Sony 550d at the top along with this JVC.The Panasonic was real close with the other two, too close to call.Component connections were always used.I have played on this JVC, approx.15 dvd's of the "problem" type as well as dd,dts, ltx,p&s,vcd,cd using various functions, test etc.with no apparent glitches, dropouts, freezes etc.I cannot comment on the progressive output as i am using an analog monitor. As with ANY player there is always something to complain about; In this case the remote. But,i watch the picture and listen to the sound so i try not to focus on the poor layout etc,.etc., of the remote. You'll get used to it. Overall the best player i have ever had!

Strength:

Progressive scan, video quality, DVD Audio capability, value

Weakness:

slight pause in audio after FF or REW

1st let me say that this unit is best for someone who has an HDTV ready set (as progressive scan is not accepted by standard TVs), or who is looking specifically for DVD Audio capability. In any other case, there is most definitaly a product of equal quality at a lower price . I purchased this unit because video quality was my main concern. I was looking to get the most of my HDTV.

The video quality of this machine using progressive output is excellent. It is equal to that of the Sony 9000ES and exceeds the Toshiba and Pioneer progressive players. The audio is good, but surpassed in datail and richness by the Sony.

As far as SACD vs DVD Audio, yes SACD is of better quality, but Sony is sure to strangle their format as they always do. Sony has too often left consumers with an obsolete format because of their bullish tactics. Most will agree that although not as good, DVD Audio is more likely to be accepted on any large scale (this is important because of available titles in either format). Currently there are more titles avail. in SACD, only because DVD Audio has just been released. Your best bet might be to wait (if possible) for players that accept both formats.

After 1 week of heavy use, I have identified only 1 slight problem. To be fair, I am a demanding consumer. Many times after using FF or REW, a few seconds after the picture and sound are resumed, the audio will skip. This happens for a fraction of a second, but can be quite irritating if you are jumping around a DVD. If you play the same DVD continuously, all is well. I hope I can get this resolved.

This player replaced an older Panasonic 220. Obviously the JVC is of better quality, both Video and Audio, but the Panasonic has functioned flawlessly for years on all material. Now that DVD is no longer a new format, we should expect all players to function without the hic-ups that seem to be the norm for dvd players.

Strength:

This product is a very nice all-in-one unit. I have a 56" hdtv and the progressive scan makes the picture look incredible!!! I really liked what the sound did for me as I auditioned it against other dvd-audio players in terms of presence and staging. My suggestion in buying home theater equipment is to go with a product based on your senses. I have the $ to buy the best and from all the auditions, this was the best out there.

Weakness:

NONE

Exactly what it says it does and more. Really is a great unit no matter what you are looking for. The sound is breathtaking and I will always sing it's praises, although most of the difference is how much better dvd-audio is!!!!

Update from last post....

Those of you experiencing a blacking out problem with bright light on this player might try this fix: remove the S-video cable when using your component video cables. I only had mine hooked up both ways because the s-video cable was there from my last player and I didnt have anywhere else for it to go. Anyway, I unplugged the s-video cable and the problem went away. It took me 3 players to figure this out. One other puzzling thing about these players, all of the boxes seem to come from JVC that have been opened and re-taped. I received 2 of them from Vanns.com, and one from Best Buy this way. Maybe they have some inter-factory fix before they ship?

Oh well, everything works great now...back to 5 stars

Strength:

Progressive Scan, DVD-audio

Weakness:

Remote, occaisional lock ups

This is a follow up to an earlier review. I have lived with this player for several months now. I am still impressed with the overall capabilites of the machine, especailly considering the price. The progressive scan is comparable to many of the better players out there. This is to say it is a major step up from interlaced playback- if you have a digital monitor. If you don't then the picture quality is comparable to mid-line player like my SONY DVP-P330. The JVC lacks the adjustments that are available on the Pioneer DV-37 and picture quality, though very good, is a definite step below the SONY 9000ES.
The audio is also very good. I have found a few DVD-audio discs. I had the opportunity to do an extended A-B comparison with the Technics A-10. The sound quality is not quite as refined as the Technics (which lacks progressive scan). The JVC is a bit darker and thicker in the mids. Also the JVC presents a bit of a haze. The hi-rez sound is a step up from CD. It is not harsh or brittle to my ears. Still, the JVC is not up to the standards of the Technics or the SONY SACD players. I also encountered a problem with my particular player and the Silverline DVD-A "Devotion" by Aaron Neville. The disc would not output from my player. I went to a local dealer, Electronic Express, and the same title wouldn't output on one of their JVC XV-D723GDs either. It did play on another they had in stock. JVC has been helpful and asked me to send my machine back for repairs.
Two other complaints, I echo some previous comments about the remote. It sucks. The keys are small and confusing. I'm transferring all the important codes to my Marantz remote once the repairs are successfully made to the player. The complaint is that the player occaisionally locks up at the end of a disc. I have to turn the unit off and back on to get it to eject a disc or do anything else.
I still recommend this player for anyone anxious to take the progressive scan and/or DVD-audio plunge. However, given the recent flurry of activity at the CES it might pay to wait until the end of the summer and newer (cheaper) products come on the market

Strength:

Excellent picture quality
Incredible sound

Weakness:

Terrible interface, clutterd - unlit remote

After reading the reviews on the JVC on this site.
I decided to get one.
I was fortunate to have saved a great deal of money by purchasing an open box buy (dont worry, I got the service plan).
So far this product has been exceptional.
I have a Toshiba 40X80 HDTV, and using Progressive scan mode, the picture quality is astounding!
The only problem that I have had is with the remote control and the user interface.
The remote is cluttered and unlit. If your room is dimmed for viewing movies, forget about trying to find the right buttons to push. Just get up and turn on a light. You'll need it! But I have another universal remote that is lit, and does the job just fine. So really, it's no big deal for me.
Another thing that I personally find somewhat irritating is the user interface. It is rather toilsome to navigate, but I imagine I just havent used it enough and that it is something I will have to get used to.
I havent tried the dvd audio yeat but am looking forward to it.
I have not experienced any of the problems that people have mentioned on this web site- the blacout problem, the screen saver problem, white flicker on the menu. Honestly, I hope it stays that way!
But I really dont see how I could have gone wrong for $260!
Awesome.
BTW- Best buy will make a deal with you! Talk them Down!

I like that you can adjust all video controls while watching so you can fine tune picture.lots of on screen menues takes a little time to get use to.Very hard to use remote in the dark as it is not lighted and buttons are very small. overall good proscan and features for the bucks. would give it a five if it would play the other formats cd-r cd-rw and photo cd
