Strength:

7 disk changer, DVD audio capable, great zoom, and slow motion operation, component video, CD/CDR/MP#
Best bang for the buck you can find

Weakness:

footprint might be large for some

This is my first DVD player and my first purchase in the process of creating a quality home theater system for my moderate budget.

I shopped for this players about a month using Best Buy ($379), Crutchfield ($379) and an intown audiofile store (NA only Denon, Onkeyo, Yamaha available) to compare different models.

Right now I can only play it through a 10 year old Sony 27 inch through composite inputs, but the sound and picture is an amazing improvement from my old 4 head VCR.

I put it through its paces with a Smashing Pumpkins DVD, a Metalica Cunning Stunts DVD, a U2 Elevation DVD and the Matrix (can you tell what I got for Christmas)

Anyway I had no problems with skipping from track to track or any track on any disk to another disk. I could not perceive an audio or video change when it skipped from one chapter to the next or even when I was changing angles or sound tracks within a chapter. It was so seemless at times I didn't realize it had changed and kept switching myself back and for from one camera view to another.

I could not A and B it in a the high end store against similar "high end" models, but there is nothing I remember about the DVD operation in the "high end" store that seemed superior to this JVC model. Infact the remote of the JVC was superior IMHO and these higher models did not have all the options the JVC one did and still cost sometimes twice as much. That concerned me a bit since I am a real believer in you get what you pay for, but with it being a nearly $400 DVD player at Best Buy and Crutchfield, I wasn't worried quite as much.

I have read some reports this model had problems decoding the Phantom Menace subtitles particulary the alien language. Pleeeeassseee give me a break, if not being able to read alien subtitles from a subpar movie is going to bother you, I'd bet you already have a signed leatherbound script you can read fall back on.

This is a great DVD player, and I know I purchased the right one for myself.

Strength:

Progressive scan, multi-disc changer, DVD-Audio, the remote is easy to use.

Weakness:

It's a bit noisy changing discs, but I can live with it.

I have a Mitsubishi WT-55805 rear projection television with progressive scan component video inputs so I was in the market for a quality DVD player with progressive scan.
I first looked at the Toshiba SD-4700, but it kept being delayed so I looked for other models. The JVC XV-FA90BK was the one I chose. I have had a DVD player since they first came out and this JVC DVD player has the best video I have seen. The picture is rich and very detailed, with no artifacts or jagged lines. It's almost like looking at a photograph. I have the 5.1 channel outputs connected to my AV Receiver. I borrowed a DVD-Audio disc from a friend and was very impressed with the sound. The other features I like is the remote that was easy to use without having to refer to the manual all the time. I have had this player for about three months and have not experienced any problems with it. It has not froze the picture or skipped like my other players. I strongly recommend this player for anyone who is looking for a quality DVD player with DVD-Audio and progressive scan. Plus the price is very reasonable. Until HD-DVD appears, this the closest that you can get to a perfect picture.
