Strength:

Low price, at the time...

Weakness:

See above. Also, why does the red light go on when the unit is off and vice versa? This behaves opposite any equipment I have ever owned.

Never worked 100%. I occasionally need to unplug the unit and wait a few minutes, and then usually it starts working properly. Locks up during playback, won't turn off, can't get my disc out, displays "ERROR", etc

Strength:

Well written manual, unit is nice size, different connection possiblities.

Weakness:

Not very good cables included.

I bought this unit based on reading DVD player reviews, this is my first DVD player. I am not disappointed with this player. Picture and sound quality is good. It works well with my surround sound system. Tried a CD and it sounded good even with surround sound. The CD sounded so good I forgot to try the two channel setting. Played the CD better than my CD player on surround sound. I cannot wait to try all the features it offers. The only thing I do not care for is the red led being on when the unit is off.!!!!??? great value at only $119. !!!!

Strength:

Price. Features. Looks. Plus, it matches my TV perfectly.

Weakness:

None so far...

A lot of bang for the buck. If your looking for a good, cheap, non-progressive DVD player, add this to your list. I have this hooked up to my TV with component cables and the picture quality is very good. JVC might have a problem making flat-screen TV''''s (see my review on the AV32F702) but this DVD player seems up to snuff.

Strength:

Excellent picture quality. Audio output very flexible. Price could not be beat.

Weakness:

Progressive scan not on board. For the price, not a big deal.

I needed a replacement for my ProScan (still running but starting to complain). You read the price right; at Block Buster they offered $149.00 for the machine, and gave me back more than $50.00 in instant DVD rentals. For that price, I could not beat this machine.

The player behaves extemely well, and integrates well with my home theatre. I use a Radio Shack 15-1994 remote to control everything, and this model was easily adapted.

I have tested it with all the known challenging DVDs, and so far it has done great. For an economical machine that has all the basic features, and delivers good performance, I highly recommend this DVD Player.

Strength:

Digital & Optical Output
S-Video Out
Component Video Out
Excellent Sound & Picture

Weakness:

Clumsy Remote
No Descending Time (Time Remaining)

Excellent purchase from Blockbuster included 13 FREE DVD rentals (approx $50 value) bringing the cost to approx $99.00. Set-up is easy, all possible audio & video connections available in an entry level player.

Only complaint, besides the ones mentioned above, is that the player locked-up during playback 3 months after purchase. Had to power-down and re-start to remove disk. JVC tech support was excellent, e-mailed me key sequence to restore factory defaults. Took to local JVC repair facility where I was told they re-soldered a bad connection (no charge, under warrenty). Did not solve lock-up problem. Problem was temperature related (player would overheat in entertainment center when placed ABOVE digital cable receiver from Comcast). Changed position of player and have not had a problem since.

Strength:

Picture & sound quality. Ease of operation

Weakness:

NONE

My 2 1/2 yr old Panasonic A310 finally died. Contacted Panasonic who is repairing for free. However, I decided to purchase a new DVD player & use other with another tv. I first purchased a Sony something 300 model. I only need a good basic DVD player for my home stero - Yamaha receiver,Polk speaker. etc. I took the Sony back the same nite. My VHS player surpassed the picture quality of that unit !!! I then purchased a JVC 45. There is no disappointment in sound quality or picture quality - both are excellent. I am glad I made my purchase on posted reviews. If I needed another unit I would run to the store to purchase one !!!!! Thank you JVC for an EXCELLENT low end DVD player that surpasses MOST "HIGH END" players in picture & sound quality !!!!!!!!!! The most frequently used functions of a DVD player.

***This is review for XV-S40BK***

In my opinion, DVD portion of home theather isn't critical as reciever and speakers, so I wanted DVD that supports current formats like DTS and DD and gives me digital componet output.

The unit has nice slim and calm design that would fit your exiting setup easily. Operation is very quiet, no disturbing noise. I was really pleased with sound quality from the unit, which reads both CD and my CDR. Video performance is pretty much the same as you will find in any other DVD player on the market, I can see that it worse then on more expensive models. I have no problems with reading DVDs or skipping tracks on CD.

Units comes with some nice features like surround sound emulation, called 3D phonic, which can be usefull for those who don't own complete speaker set. 3D Phonic give few selections like drama, action and theater, although I do not recommend it for music. Ather add-ons include zoom function (picture close-up), parental lock, picture briteness adjustment (theather position) and resume play.

As shortfalls I would mention no build-in clock, limited CD playback options (no random or list), cheap cables. Glow or backlit remore wouldn't hurt too.

Overall, I'm recommending this DVD for those you are not keen on progressive scan and MP3 playbeack and want to pay reasonable price for good performance.

Strength:

Excellent Pic quality, easy to use.

Weakness:

Would not read all discs. angle logo would appear onscreen when no angle feature was offered on the dvd.

Purchased this dvd player April 2001. Worked perfect until last month started locking up during playback, would not read all discs, and during the movie playback the angle logo would appear in the top corner while no angle feature was featured on the dvd.

Strength:

Wide range of formats (VCD, CD-R, CD-RW), every input type (optical, component, S-video)

Weakness:

No clock display available, unusual button layout on remote

This is a great DVD player for under $200.00. It runs extremely quiet--no humming or buzzing that I understand some other DVD players have; the unit is handsome--very thin with a nice gold finish. This player comes with lots of useful features that are easy to adjust such as: resume or memory playback, angle, subtitle, theater position, parental lock, screen format, variable dimmer of digital display via remote, etc. I am thrilled with this unit and it makes a welcome addition to my entertainment center, which is made up of all JVC products. I only wish that it displayed a clock like my JVC VCR does since it sits on the highest shelf of my entertainment center. Otherwise, I highly recommend this unit for a reliable and versatile DVD player. In its price range, it has got to be at the top of its class.
