Strength:

Build quality, reliability, infallibility (with any kind of media on any disc), variety of features, easy on screen menu

Weakness:

mp3 playback good, but not great - but adequarte for my needs, it can still function as a 10 hour jukebox!

(I own the 75GD, which is identical except that its Gold not Black - more like silver actually!) Excellent value for money, with a plethora of features that cover all your (disk-based media) needs. The MP3 playback could be better, in the sense you are limited in how you burn cds, and only 30 characters of track names are visible, ID3 is not supported (but does not make a difference to playback). Also, repeat, random etc are unavilable. But atleast (unlike the Toshiba DVD player I bought and returned within 1 week) this player reads every disc I throw at it - CDR, CDRW, with MP3, Video CD on CDRW, DVD, DVD RW - pretty impressive. Yes, mp3 and DVD Audio playback only woks with the analog outputs, so get over it - they still sound awesome! I''d recommend this to anyone.

Strength:

Easy to use. I do not understand all the complaints about the remote.

Weakness:

Would like an additional audio out to use my tv speakers for the center channel.

This is my first dvd player. Audio and video clarity are great. I''d buy it again without hesitation. My tv and receiver are JVC so everytihng is quite compatible.

Strength:

features. svcd playback.

Weakness:

remote looks a bit dated, especially considering the attempt at modern design of the player. A Pioneer Dv-444 gives you more for less.

First of all, I don''t have a Plasma or HDTV, so the full capabilities of a good dvd player are probably lost on me as far a picture is concerned. The most important issue of note is that this unit will play svcd''s although it is seldom listed as a feature. Other than that, everything else seems to be pretty solid. No reliability or Mp3 issues as some others have reported, but no one can predict the future.

Strength:

Very clear picture and sound.

Weakness:

There is a little bit of audio that is missed when using some of the "added features" on the dvd''s when the audio stream switches in and out of Dolby Digital. I don''t understand the dvd-audio issue mentioned above, particularly since standard cd''s output through the digital optical cable.

This is my first dvd player, so my experience is limited. I will say that the picture is fantastic and the sound transmitted through the digital optical output is unbelieveable. The player came with two dvd audio disks which won''t play through the digital output-this seems odd to me because regular cd''s will play through the optical output--does anyone know why?? The remote is ok, like most JVC''s but I don''t like the labeling on the menu buttons...granted I''m a novice, but it takes me several trys to get to the menu (disk menu, player menu, preferences, etc) I''m looking for. Once I get there, the setup is pretty self explanatory. All in all, I like the player. My entire system is JVC, so the remote compatibility is great.

Strength:

Does just about everything a DVD player can do for a great price. Slim design and great video performance.

Weakness:

Remote is big, bulky, and worthless. On-screen guide won''t win any ease of use awards.

This unit replaced my JVC XV-D723GD player which I purchased for $899.00 less than a year ago. It didn''t play CD-R/RW''s or MP3''s direct from a CD-R. This is the only unit that I could find that played every possible CD/DVD format except SACD. For $250.00 the picture, sound, and features cannot be faulted. The progressive scan video is as good as I''ve seen, and the D/A converters are as good or better than my Nakamichi CD player which was four times the price three years ago. The fact that you can play 10 hours of MP3''s with an on-screen playlist just adds to the "cool" factor.

Strength:

Auto scaling, Good picture, Good Sound, DVD Audio

Weakness:

No digital output for mp3's, no separate front stereo outputs

I bought this product from Crutchfield, since my 3yr old RCA dvd player cannot handle mp3's and CD-R. So far the player is rocking. My Sony STR-GA7ES receiver does not have DD/DTS decoders and i am using the built-in decoders for both DD/DTS and getting pretty good sound. I think DVD audio is a throwaway for this price. Here are some Tips :

1. When you burn mp3's, use ID3v1 tags and not ID3v2 tags,
since the player does not somehow like Id3v2 tags
2. Use an RCA audio splitter, to get your receivers DSP
processing for your audio CD's and Mp3's since there
are no additional front stereo outputs apart from 5.1
output.

I think for this price range, it is a very good player.
I heard that panasonic also makes a player in this price range with similar features.

Strength:

price/ progressive, dvd-A, optical and coaxial digital outs, plays cd, cd-r/rw, video cd, mp3, 7 disc changer (fa95gd)

Weakness:

mediocre performance. 7 disc changer can't shuffle between discs. but why else would you want a changer?

plus, my player is funky out of the box. video cuts out during interlaced playback through s-video output (direct to TV) on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (superbit)/ Farewell My Concubine. Both Chinese language films with English Subtitles. Have only watched 4 mivies so far. the other two english language fils were fine.

No video cut out from composite. (no component inputs to test with). No cutout using (different) dvd player on laptop through same s-video cable to same TV input so seems definately to be the jvc player.

Cutout usually happens at top of chapters and intense action or audio. It happens a lot, rendering the films unwatchable through s-video.

Any one else with a jvc dvd-a progressive player able to test interlaced playback of superbit version of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon over S-video. Hope its just my player.

Strength:

Very good picture, lot of setup & adjustments, dvd-a, build-in DD & DTS decoder, optical & coaxial out, door will close when push on/off button, included all cables for immediately hookup. (At least can test the player dead or work).

Weakness:

No random play button on remote, no phone jack out on front panel.

This player provided a very good and detail pictures, never freeze at changing layers at dvd movies, only half a second pulse. And the drive is quick & quiet. I used it as a cd player too, but not MP3, due to the compressed sound, why use MP3 (not quite good sound) at home when you have good gears, the copied cd-r, cd-rw already not as good as the original cd, then compress it again! I better not listen to. I need good sound, then I need original cd, even gold cd is better.

Only had problem with Blue Man Group DVD-A disc, it freezed at the beginning of dvd-analog side, not my old Sharp, but still playable when push other buttons and into memu before freezed up.

Over all very satisfied with this player.

This is an ammendment to my previous review about the MP3 problems I encountered.

It was brought to my attention that the ID3V2 tags in the
mp3 files caused the player problems.

Once they were removed the MP3 functions worked correctly.

I only wish JVC could have told me this when I spoke to them, at the least they could have posted this information on their website, oh well!

Now I am very happy with the DVD player, great picture and sound. I would recommend this player to anyone.
