Strength:

Picture Quality (if you can see it all) Sound

Weakness:

Can''t play DVD Audio through digital output Can''t see all teh picture (could be tv)

Actually I didn''t pay anything for this - it was a replacement for a Denon that was a total lemon. I had to take the JVC back after 2 months because it suddenly refused to recognise any disc. It took a month to fix but is now playing everything again. However, I now have a problem that I didn''t notice before (maybe it was there but I didn''t look for it) - the picture is too big for the screen! I''m outputting the picture on the Component Outputs to a Mitsubishi 46" Widescreen TV and the top & sides of all the movies are cut off. This is both with 16:9 format and anything wider. Zooming out makes the picture too small but DOES show how much of the picture is missing. I don''t know if it''s the TV or the DVD player, but neither seem to have an adjustment to fix it. Is this normal? Anyone else seen it? The other gripe is that DVD audio is not output on the fibre-optic digital audio output (nor the coax). Do I have to get more cables to be able to listen to DVD audio discs in Dolby 5.1? Crazy!

Strength:

Great picture when it is not in the shop.

Weakness:

Unit freezes....

I would like to let everyone know that I posted a review for the JVC XV-SA75GD at the beginning of January. And had given it a "Five Star" rating. I still like the unit but it has a MAJOR problem. The unit freezes, in my case it would freeze playing DVD-A with a DTS format. Any other DVD-A formate it would just say "NO Disc". I called JVC and they told me that there were no recalls for the unit and I should just bring it back to the store. JVC really needs to look into this, I have recieved over 5 e-mails from people who have had this same problem and now people are posting reviews reflecting this. A DVD payer that "freezes up" is not acceptable. Take it back and get it fixed so that JVC can fix the problem for good in the long run. As you read my last review this is my second unit, the first did not work out of the box! I have owned it for 60 days and it has been in the shop now for the past two weeks. All I am hopeful that Best Buy fixs it the first time.

Strength:

Good video and analog audio quality. DVD-Audio. Progressive scan. Loads of features.

Weakness:

Locks up or fails to play on several DVDs. Flimsy tray.

I've had this player for two weeks. Bought it to replace my old Panasonic mainly for its DVD-audio feature. But I'm disappointed at its performance on DVD video. It jumped around on Phantom Menace and required a hard reboot. Then it failed to play T2 (UE) and Tomorrow Never Dies. The LCD just says "READING" for ever. My 4-year-old Panasonic never had trouble playing any DVDs. The disc transport on this JVC is already starting to make some strange noises. I don't think this unit will last long. I'm taking it back.

On discs that it did play, the picture quality is excellent. Using the Cinema mode, I play through an S-video connection to a Sony rear projection TV. Vivid colors and good contrast. I like the zooming feature, the easy to use menu and picture adjustment capability. Good remote control also. The two-channel analog output on regular CDs gives a warm sound but vague imaging, compared to my old Marantz CD changer.

Strength:

Progressive Scan and DVD Audio together in the same unit.

Weakness:

Had to go back to Best Buy because the first one out of the box would just say "loading".

The first DVD player was not working out of the box. We called JVC and went though a reset. Work good for 20 min and then went back to "loading" mode. And the funny thing was at the time there were only three units in the entire St. Louis area. And after this it was down to two! Got the new one home and everything worked fine. We are using the component jacks with Monster Cable into the Sony 32XBR450, digital out co-axial, and six channel into the Sony STR-DE1075.

One of the things that I am not happy with is that DVD Audio CD's are not the same. I have a Sting CD that is DTS that uses the co-ax and then I have a Fleetwood Mac CD that uses multi-channel. I know that is not JVC's fault but it would have been nice if did not need to run back out to Best Buy after bring home Fleetwood Mac and drop another $150.00 on Moster Cable to listen to a $22 CD. But after all that the DVD Audio ROCKS!!!!!!!!! There nothing like being in a room that is full of music! I really liked Sony's SACD but they do not make a DVD/Progressive Scan/SACD in this price range.

Over all we are very happy with the DVD player, it has meet our expectations. Great picture quality and very nice multi-chan audio.

Strength:

Great Looks, many different options for the money, excellent picture quality

Weakness:

the sound of the mp3 playback isn't the best using only your tv.

A very stylish, sharp looking DVD player. Great value! Have been using for over three months now and have had zero problems with it. Seems to be built solid for the long haul. Easy to use on-screen menu. very user friendly. Recommended over many of sony's DVD players when comparing price and functions.

I just wanted to let everyone that is looking at the 70BK or the 75GD and has questions about the PM subtitle problem, I may have the answer for you. I also am looking at purchasing this product for the use with idvd on a mac. Anyway I called JVC and asked them about the PM subtitle problem and the person that I talked to said that there is a fix for this. I live in MN and he said I would have to ship it to IL to get it serviced. It would be covered under warranty, but I would have to pay shipping. I don't plan on getting it fixed because it isn't that big of a deal for me anyway. But I thought for those that need this option more than I do, you would like to know that there is a fix.

I hope I helped someone out there.

Strength:

Great picture, loads of useful features, easy setup

Weakness:

freezes up, stops for a second in the middle of dvds

Wow this dvd player got great reviews and thats what influenced me to purchase this unit over the sony-ns700p, and several other units. When it decides it wants to work this is an excellent dvd player, great picture especially in progressive mode, lots of functions like zoom for example which is really cool and extremely easy setup. Now after reading all the reviews it just sounds like I must have picked the f#!@#*&% lemon because my player stops or pauses in the middle of dvds and continues but on one dvd it stops all togther and freezes? No one else has written about any problem like this so I guess I just must have gotten a bad unit. If anyone has had this problem with there unit PLEASE e-mail me with some insight as to what the heck might be wrong. Im going to exchange it for another tomorrow and i'll write a follow up review.

Strength:

Excellent Progressive picture, good featureset

Weakness:

Sub-title bug that appears with Phantom Menace, Akira, and others

I'm posting this review here as a reference to the one I posted for the 70BK. The only substantial difference between the 70 and 75 is the color. Anyone investigating either model should look over the reviews for the other.

Also, be aware that while this player has a lot going for it, it will not play the Phantom Menace or other DVDs with specialty sub-titles correctly.

Strength:

Picture, Sound, Menu Access, Remote

Weakness:

No digi output for mp3, no separate stereo only jacks, limited CD resume play

My original review is listed under the 70BK LISTING. I know many here feel compelled to post their reviews of similar equipment under as many listings as are applicable. While there is nothing technically wrong with this so long as the equipment is the same but with different model #'s, I do not like to engage in this practice myself. However, the previous poster (who owns a 90BK) has not posted the same ratings for the 75GD as he listed for the 70BK. I am sure this was a harmless error but the net effect on the rating is quite measurable at these low #'s.

Soooooooo, I'm reposting my ratings for the 70BK here in an effort to square things. And you know, in the interim since, I've grown to like the darn thing even more.

Cheers.
