Strength:

Great price on Refurb Unit

Weakness:

Sloooooooow tray

I purchased this unit from Ubid to run as a high end CD player. I looked at Rotel, NAD, and Adcom. For the price of 159 this unit simply can not be beat. The depth of the music is amazing. May lack a bit on the low end but with my system it still sounds great (Adcom Amp, Forte Class A Pre Amp, Paradigm reference 20). But with confidence under $200

Strength:

Video Quality

Weakness:

Didn't read most of the DVD's I got!!

I bought this unit instead of the Pioneer 525 initially, because it had possibility to change regions without a hardware change. The sales rep also told me that the video quality of this system is much better.

I then got two DVD's which worked no problem (Cats and Les Miserables in concert) and I rented some (Antz, Bugs Life, analyze this) At that stage the Player worked fine.

Renting Casablanca then somehow changed the whole thing. It couldn't read the disc at all and taking into account that the disc had a minor crack on the outside (shouldn't matter for reading the start of the disc!!) I assumed that this DVD was defective.

I then bought two more DVDs and wanted to read them to, but they wouldn't read in either. The Sales reps first didn't want to believe this, but after their discs didn't work either they exchanged it for me for the Pioneer 626D with one region only. I went for that because of the built in Dolby Digital and dts decoders and I am quite happy to have done that. Would have got the marantz again if they would have had the modell in stock, but they stopped selling it.

Strength:

Very good video and sound reproduction
Multi-region (1 and 4)

Weakness:

Slow response

The reason I bought this DVD was the Marantz name and the capacity of playing discs of regions 1 and 4

One of the Blockbuster stores in my area takes very little care on storing the discs and they are often full of scratches, but the player has always been able to play them, even if at moments there is either a brief freeze or skip.

CD's are also reproduced very well, although I don't use it for this purpose since a carrousel CD player from H/K was already there before, it works also fine and I will keep it because of the convenience of the carrousel.

I particularly like one dts disc that I own from Roy Orbison. The sound reproduced from this player is absolutely fantastic.

I never use the surround modes available from the player since I prefer the few but effective modes available in my H/K AVR 500 receiver.

Strength:

easy user menu system, good picture, good sound reproduction, quiet drive mechanism.

Weakness:

slow at reading discs on loading and opening/closing tray.

This machine is my first venture into DVD, the selling points i was looking for was brand name and good picture quality. The other point was the ability to be decoded for multi region without delving inside the machine. I have purchased region 1 and 2 discs and both play exceptionaly well. The price paid was £370 which i didn't think was bad for the quality of picture and brand name.
