Strength:

Good Audio quality and Video

Weakness:

Slow, lots of errors, poor quality construction, does not play cdr's as most marantz dvd players do, no hdcd, over priced for the options.

I bouhght this dvd 3months ago and now I am going to get it back to my dealer, I think I were expecting too much from a Marantz's dvd player since the 7000 model its a good model.
It was normal for it to freezes and skip, some times the only way to play a movie again was turning the power off and on again. It does not play cdr's/cdrw, and its very slow changing between dvds. I replaced it for a Pioneer 626D and it works great, the problems has gone.
Play only new dvd discs as possible (no scratches).
Audio quality is slighly better than the 626, but pioneer gives me a lot of choices the vc5000 does not.

none so far

great buy for what you get. i highly recommend the player. it is well build and has given me hundred of hours of great entertainment. marantz has done it again. so what if the company was bought by phillips. it still produces some of the best audio and video equipment out there.

Strength:

great warm sound and detail the video quality is amazing

Weakness:

have to switch to dts and dolby digital every time you watch a dd dvd or dts dvd

great player if you are looking for a dvd changer. for a third the cost of the sony dvp-9000es it is an unbelievable value. it is not a progressive scan dvd player like the sony, but the video quality is still excellent. the sound from cds is rich and warm and very detailed. get one if you are looking for a dvd changer. it is by far one of the best out there.

Weakness:

can't play cd-r's/cd-rw's
slow switching discs
no random play between 5 audio discs!
poor quality

If I could give this unit 0 stars or less I would.

The main functional weakness of this unit is that there is no way to randomly play audio tracks between discs. it is possible to put in a mode where it will shuffle all the tracks on a single disc and play all of them before moving on the next disc and shuffling them. There just doesn't seem to be much point in having a 5 disc changer if you can't random play between all the discs.

The other big problem is that the unit breaks down constantly. It worked fine for a little while, then it started giving me "disc errors" when I tried to play audio cd's. For a while I could move the same disc between the 5 positions until it played in one of them. Then that stopped working unless I powered down the unit completely (no "standby" mode). Even that eventually stopped working. Finally, the player stopped accepting cd's or dvd's. It was sent back to Marantz, worked fine for a week upon return, and is now exhibiting the same behavior.

I'll probably scrap this unit, get a 5 disc cd changer and single disc dvd player.

Strength:

great video quality, great sound quality, dvd audio capability

Weakness:

no optical output and you have to switch between dts and dolby digital depending what digital info you dvd is encoded with

still running great after using it several hours and days to break it in. no problems like the other reviewers. the picture quality is amazing due to the 27 MHz filtering. i've watched several dts encoded movies on it and the sound quality is amazing. i've not had the chance to listen to dvd audio on this player yet and there aren't that many titles out there either unless you are a classical music fan. go get one now and you will not be dissapointed.

update from my last review. i complained abaut having to switch between dts and ac3 depending on movies, but this is not true just leave the digital audio selection on dts and it will automatically switch to DD and dts depending on movie. i've had this unit for a while now and haven't had a single problem like some of the other reviewer.

Strength:

Great DTS unit for DVD. Much better than my Pioneer.Audio is great

Weakness:

switching discs is slow,no optical output

Easly to hookup with my Kenwood using digital coaxial and S-video connection. Improved picture.

Sluggish changing from one disc to the other. Directs for using are limited. M
Menu on screen for cd and dvd large and easy to read.
More expensive models do have optical connection but coaxial is okay.

CD sound wonderful compared to Kenwood 200 cd changer.

Strength:

Good video and sound when working.

Weakness:

Slow, doesn't work most of the time.

This DVD player has given me costant problems. I often get "Disc Error" with both DVDs and CDs, new or old. When it does start to play a movie I can rarely get alll the way through it it without problems. It often will stop playing and kind of lock up during a movie. I have had it do the same with CDs. To fix this I have to do anything from turning it completely off to moving the disc from 1 through five and hope that it will eventualy work. I will probably get rid of soon and and get a seperate CD player and DVD player. If I have to deal with it much longer it may end up going out the window.

Strength:

picture & sound & no noise while playing dvd

Weakness:

slow disc changing, loud when switching dvd

just watched all lethal weapon dvds back to back and all four are dts dvds. i was sick and was prescribed bedrest. what a great dvd player easily one of the best changers on the market. it is a little slow reading discs when you switch from one disc to another. it is worth the wait for the picture and sound quality. like marantz's motto states, "music matters" and on this dvd changer it's amazing. if you own lots of dts movies or want to use your dvd player as a cd player too, this is it.
it is far better than you imagined and a giant killer for the price.

the vc-5000 is the perfect bedroom unit. just bought the sr-14 receiver to match the marantz dvd player and i'm using this with nht speakers in the bedroom. they are not really audiophile components, but perfect for home theater and i mean perfect. marantz has gotten alot of crap lately (being a phillips subsidiary) but both vc5000 and sr-14 are ultimate home theater components worth every cent. i always had great luck with top of the line sony es line, but for the money the marantz is quite worthwhile. music on the sony es series components and b&w speakers in my music room is better but does not justify the extra several thousands of dollars difference. if you want a super nice and high performing home theater setup; buy the marantz now and you will not regret it.
