Strength:

Sound, picture

Weakness:

Remote

The reason for the earlier complaints about the picture quality is because there was a programming problem with the first models, which has been resolved. If you have one of the first one's to hit the market, take it back to get reprogrammed. It was not dumping the information fast enough.

Strength:

Audio capability

Weakness:

unrealibility to read and play DVD's - software problem

Having purchased a NAD T760 it was fairly natural (audio first HT second priority)to purchase the NAD T550. Picture quality was great and audio exceptional. Once I got the thing home the wheels fell off. The very first DVD movie I hired would not play. 4 more movies later and having rebooted and reset the machine a number of times I 'wised' up and returned it to NAD agent. They provided an exchange unit which I tested at the store. The first 2 DVD's I tried were fine, the 3rd (Anaconda)it hung up on and could not read it. Maybe it was the disc so we tested the disc in other machines which all had no problem playing it *even the cheap units). Back to NAD it went , who reloaded the latest software. Still no luck! NAD tried other new units which all failed. Anyway what a disappointment , but at least NAD in SA are trying to resolve it and have now approached the techies at NAD in the UK.
Has anyone else had this problem or can possibly shed light on it?

Strength:

Sound and picture.

Weakness:

Lack of CD-R playback and you have to aim the remote-control carefully.

I got the 3rd version of the NAD. You can choose whitch sone (1-6) and there is no problems with playback. Picture is as good as it gets. Something which is a problem is when I tries to record a CD to MD. The Nad play the songs "all-in-one" so there is only one track at the MD. I use the built in decoder, and it is nerly as good as the one in the AV Reciver Denon AVR 2700.

This is my first DVD player. I have owned a NAD tape deck for 10 years and was very pleased with the quality. I needed to replace my 10 year old CD player so decided to purchase a CD/DVD combo. I am using the T550 with the NAD T760 receiver. All I can say is WOW! The sound quality with both DVDs and CDs is incredible. I think the visual quality is great but this is the first DVD player I have owned. I have had no difficulty playing any DVDs (i.e. The Matrix, The Patiort, etc.) or CDs. The unit can be loud with some DVDs. The only downfall is the remote which does not have any backlighting and is difficult to read. I bought a Marantz universal remote to consolidate all of my remotes. However, I discovered that it is difficult to program the new NAD remotes given the way it spreads out the beam and the standby system used by the remote. My dealer (State Street Discount) has shown me some tricks but I still have difficulty. Overall I am extremely pleased especially since I got a great price.

Strength:

quality of sound , very sharp and clear sound

Weakness:

little bit to much base(some people like it)

I was looking for a DVD and a nice CD player. After tried toshiba, sony and yamaha units that I bring at home of same or little bit lower price than the Nad, The sound especially in hi notes, EX Sarah Brigthman was too metallic, almost distortion. I finally bring the Nad that gives me a more musical sound like old vinyls that are far away from any of the other DVD tried before. In store now, december 2000, they sell third generation of Nad t-550 so there is absolutely no problem playing any cd or dvd. Top gun sound just very well. For the price, if you can't afford the new Arcam DVD (2500$), the Nad is by far away the best rapport sound and price quality I've found after 2 months of DVD listening.
I use Simms Audio Integrated amplifier with the incredible Totem Rock speakers as front and the wonderfull paradigm ADP-170 for surrounds. Try it, you will never go back.
