Strength:

Sound quality from Dolby Digital decoder

Weakness:

Picture quality from svideo output could be crisper

Seems to me that the Nakamichi is something of an unsung hero, with little mention of it at Audio Review or the hi fi press in general. Having said this, check out this DVD player. Compared it to a JVC 701 thru svideo connection on a 32" 4:3 TV and the image quality was far superior even on this lowly setup. The Dolby Digital decoder is in another league. Superb. It was also better than the internal decoder on a Denon AVR2800. The setup options are limited, but enough, and the look is understated, having no superfluous controls. Downconversion from an anamorphic DVD is very clean, with a general softening of the image. No glitches as yet. Do yourselves a favour, try this DVD player for yourself, especially if you need a built-in decoder!

Strength:

excellent audio/video output for DTS, sounds better than my old toshiba dvd SD 4109X. WORKS WELL WITH MY NAK AV10

Weakness:

none whatsoever

this player is top notch, however I noticed that the remote looks alike like the pioneer hummmmm...., maybe it was made by the same manufacturer and the company tweeked it with their own special parts, or maybe the same company at all. Anyway, there was a big difference when I plugged this player in, replacing my toshiba. I loved my toshiba, but this player blew it away. Audio and picture wise it was better. So if you're looking for a player make sure to audition this one. Loading is a bit slow and so does my toshiba. And who cares about loading the quality is what matters right?

Strength:

Quality construction, Fantastic picture and sound

Weakness:

Slow loading, slow reading, poor remote

I bought this after my Panasonic A110 died (like everyone elses) I was excited because it matched my Nak AV-10 and had that same quality look and feel. The picture quality was clean and sharp and the audio was equally satisfying.
Unfortunately it would freeze up with certain titles. Audio CD's would sometimes not be recognized or stop playing mid track. I returned it and they gave me a Nak DVD10S. Same problem only not quite as often and more random. I have a lot of respect for Nak products and hesitate to give this player a low rating. Never the less I returned it and purchased another brand. At this point I just want a DVD player that works all the time so I don't have to listen to my wife calling for me while I am underneath my car because Dirty Dancing froze up again!

Strength:

Sound quality and cool style.

Weakness:

Slow disc reading.

Nak DVD-10 was already very nice product.
And Nak DVD-10s with added feature such as zoom and coaxial digit out.
This product is winner of this class and even the class of
twice the price. I got it for $650 from authorized deal from the web. With this DVD player you can ask everything you want from HT, and moreover you don't have to buy seperate CD player if you were looking for one.
Sound quality in CD playback is comparable with $1000-$1500 CD player out on market. It is very clean, detail, acurate, and deep powerful base. I couldn't believe that my system is making so much better sound after I just changed DVD player.
I recently had Pioneer 525 DVD player which I was very happy with. But after I heard this Nak, I had to return the Pioneer (plus I sold my favorite NAD CD player), and spend three times more money for this unit.
This Nak produces perfect and accurate surround on every movie I played, and specially on DTS music.
This is 5 star without any question.

Strength:

Looks good. Good OSD, picture.

Weakness:

Very unreliable. Should work perfect for 5 years for what it costs.

My personal experience :
Take I : The first one I got didn't read DVDs at all.
Take II : The second wasn't set to the my region.
Take III: The third broke after 8 months (machine went completely crazy). Still in repair after 2 weeks.

Besides that, it's a good machine, looks great with the
AV-8 reciever and has nice features + good picture.

I still want my money back !

Strength:

Amazing picture quality, good sound, AC-3 decoder.

Weakness:

Err... it doesn't play some discs, it hardly plays any at all if you chip it, it breaks!

Demoed this against all the top rated competition including the very expensive THX Denon machine, and it was comprehensively the best in terms of picture. Sound was average overall, but I use an external processor so this doesn't matter.

Problems started about 2 weeks later when the transport started to click constantly during use. Took the machine back and got it swapped for another, which got rid of this problem.

Still didn't play all discs (eg. Matrix), but then few players did so I could handle it. Then I got it chipped, and loads of discs wouldn't play properly due to digital blocking - some discs even stalled during play.

I have returned the played to the dealer, and it is being swapped for the new model, the DVD-10S, which is apparently far superior to the DVD-10, and actually works! Well, that's what they tell me - let's wait and see!

Overall, picture is great, even if the player is expensive, but on the basis that it breaks and doesn't play lots of discs, I have to recommend that you don't touch it. Hopefully the DVD-10S will be better, I'll post my findings when I know!

Strength:

Excellent Picture, Excellent Reliability, Ease of Use, Styling is Nice

Weakness:

Not the best on playing CDs, but come on - who buys these things for two-channel stereo with CDs anyway?

I have not had a single problem with this unit in the 9 months I have used it. It has played every DVD flawlessly. I have been thoroughly impressed by the picture quality, better than my previous units. Audio quality for movies is excellent, this product lives up to Nakamichi standards. It is important for others to know that this unit performs great, looks conservative, but stylish, plays CD-Rs well. The time it takes to read a DVD and play is not at all prolonged, similar to other units. It is easy to use.

I would not hesitate to purchase this unit again.

Associated equipment: Parasound AVC-2500u, Bryston 4B-ST, Parasound HCA-2205, PSB Stratus Gold-i's, Pinnacle Classic Gold Center, Mission 775 surrounds.

I have also used it with Nakamichi AV-10, Sonus Faber Concertos, Paradigm LCR-350, and REL Storm III

Strength:

Sharp picture, zoom funtion, solid build, built-in dolby digital decoders, pretty looking...

Weakness:

None

After I went through two NAD T550's with no positive experiences whatsoever, I wanted to find a higher-end player with built-in dolby digital decoders, which wasn't easy. The Nak seemed to be custom-tailored to my needs and hasn't let me down since I've been using it. Resolution is crisp, digital processing is accurate, the zoom function is fun as are all the other bells and whistles. It makes a nice second CD player too. Of course, considering the price I paid for a new one ($300 under MSRP), I like it even better.

Strength:

Sound quality & picture quality

Weakness:

No digital co-axial output.

I bought this unit because I was looking to put together a system for dual purpose use . { HT & music } Something to play dvd's & cd's really well . {Much better than any Yamaha product I've ever owned .} It does both & I really think I would have to spend a lot more to get a small improvement in both at this time .
The digital output choice is the only negative & that's only if you like choices . However , you won't get to spend more than $50- on a Toslink unless you really try .
It looks like Nakamichi has a winner on it's hands along with the AV-10 . A great start towards reestablishing
the legendary name in the U.S. market .
