Strength:

Picture Quality,Build and Audio.

Weakness:

None-Yet

In comparison with the other DVD players in the 500 dollar range, this player has the edge, the only other player I would consider is the Marantz vc5000 only because of the 3yr warranty, but the price tag is 699$. After testing every other player and reading countless reviews on them, I went with the Onkyo because 1.Solid and heavy construction, construction on the others is very lightwight, in fact, I bought the Pioneer d302 first, but the front plate tray fell apart after opening the box.2.Zoom feature which is awesome if you have a 27 inch TV.3.Picture quality. 4.5.1 audio playback is better than any of the others, just rent the Matrix and hear for yourself.4. Smooth changer mechanism, the others are noisy and sound cheap.5. 6 disc option is great for playing cds. 6.Price, the best on the market for 379$ before tax at Circuit City, used to be 499$. Overall, I would recommend this player to anyone that is looking for a DVD player to replace there old cd changer and DVD player.
My current system:
Marantz sr7000
Energy C-2s
JBL center and rears(replacing with energy center and rears)
Onkyo cr600
Sony 27inch(replacing with Sony Vega 32inch)
I am also using the D/A converters from the Marantz which is a awesome musical receiver and great home theater receiver too.

Strength:

Image/Audio quality, price, and appearance.

Weakness:

Slow disc shuffle.

Awesome... I love this Multi-disc DVD player!!
The Image/Audio quality is spectacular, and to have a unit that replaces three of my other components, and also eceeds their capabilities is great.

There have been some concerns about the shuffle ability, but it is very minor as far as I'm concerned. It performs very well for my needs, and I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone...

Strength:

Felt solid. Looked good. Holds 6 disks. Special function plays only CDs automatically when both DVDs and CDs are loaded.

Weakness:

Boring, plain, non-backlit remote. Hard to program CD tracks.

I purchased the C600 hoping to replace my old Sony CDP-C725 CD changer and gain a DVD player in the process. I used it for one weekend and returned it for Onkyo's DV-S525 single player. It was just to difficult to use as a CD changer. I loved the exchange feature, but not the on-screen programming of CD tracks. CD sound was a little brighter than my Sony, and it couldn't handle scratches as well either.

As a DVD player, it functioned well. Disks seemed to load fairly quickly. FF/FR and slow motion pictures were somewhat jerky, but clear. My S525's picture looks just like the C600's to me.

One of the primary reasons I chose Onkyo over the Sony S530 was the zoom feature. My wife and kids would rather see a full screen on our Toshiba 27" TV than letterbox format on letterbox only discs. The other reason was that I could get it through a friend at a no-haggle cost+10% delivered personally to my door. (Same for the S525).

I'll qualify this is an above-average player with some good features and versatility as a DVD player, but not as a CD changer. It is also a little more expensive than I think it should be. It does look really good though.

Strength:

Great picture quality Unbelievable audio! Solid preformance.

Weakness:

Zoom logo stays on the screen. Won't play cd's in random

This choice was a no brainer it was hands down the best DVD Circut City carried and I already had an Onkyo A/V reciever. With the fiber optic cable and S-video input it put to shame the picture quality of the other sets. Having run it into my 36" Sony Wega the picture was equal to most HD ready tv's they had set up at the store. This player was also going to double as my CD player and I was equally impressed there as the sound quality was crystal. I'm running a pair of Infinity Composition Overture 3's on the "A" and Overture 2's on the B's. The sound seems larger and more exact than with any othe r source I've had. The only drawbacks I can name are the fact that it wouldn't randomally play cd's or songs except for one disc at a time. Also you can only preprogram 24 songs this isn't much when yoou consider this machine plays 6 cd's. I've never had any loading or other p0roblems with it and it runs hard, mostof the time all night long with the music on in the bedroom. Great Machine with all the bells and whistles. The only other bad thing is my sony dosen't have 16:9 aspect ratio and I use the zoom which won't go off the screen unless I pause the screen untill the screen saver comes on and then resume without the letters, minor but still alittle irritating

Strength:

picture quality - even in zoom mode - is awesome, as is sound quality. in my opinion, onkyo is totally worth the extra money if you've got it.

Weakness:

"Zoom 1" etc. stays on screen while in zoom-mode, player automatically starts to search for and load/play a disc even if you just hit "close" button...very annoying but harmless overall

i have had this player for a year and so far it has been great. the quality of picture and sound is OUTSTANDING based on comparison with performance of other entry to mid-range dvd players owned by family and friends. (and we just have it hooked up with regular cables, not s-monster or fiber-optic).

have NEVER had any disc-skip or freeze-frame problems on movies that were bought new. a few problems with rentals but that was due to mishandling of the disc by others.

overall, very quiet operation, though for a couple days several months ago it made this loud whirring noise for first 1-5 minutes of play then would go away. i was getting ready to have it serviced and then the problem just went away and it hasn't ever happened again. note: this may have been my fault as i accidentally left it on "pause" all night shortly before the problem occured. at any rate, we are buying the extended warranty just in case.

received as a gift so of course it was a great value for me, but if i were spending my own money (i don't have any) i would sacrifice the 5-disc capacity. it's convenient but not necessary unless this will double as your cd player.

Strength:

When the unit works it sounds decent.

Weakness:

Inability to shuffle!!! Slow loading and playing.

This unit has been problematic since I purchased it. Last December the unit started intermittently not loading a cd or DVD. It has always been very slow both changing and loading Cd's or DVD's. Eventually the unit would fail all the time making it nearly impossible to play anything, I would literally turn the unit off about ten times before it would finally load and play. Sometimes even if it would load it would skip and sound like a scratched record? I finally worked with Onkyo and found a mail order repair option in my state that would work on it. They pretty much held the unit hostage for over tow months saying the part was unavailable since it was a new unit. Once I complained to Onkyo they claimed the part had been shipping and they would get this store the proper parts, namely a new laser and ribbon cable -- I believe. I finally received the unit back and it failed immediately not allowing me to load but every five to ten attempts. Upon calling Onkyo, they urged me send the unit to them where they worked on it and then sent it back to me weeks later. Once I received the unit it now showed a new error, namely MECHA ERROR and I could not even open the slot at all. I called them and they said to send it back to them of which when they checked it out they said everything worked and it must have been something loose or the shipping that corrected it. Upon speaking to the manager I insisted that I wanted a replacement unit that had been dangled before this time yet never delivered. I have had the new unit for maybe two to three months now and I am having the same exact problems again. The UPS call tag is on its way. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS UNIT! IT is a piece of crap that I have regretfully wasted my money.

Strength:

Build quality, tray quality, AMAZING sound!, and nice video

Weakness:

ZOOM 1 (or whatever zoom mode you use) stays on the screen while watching. Not a big deal just annoying.

I got this DVD player after around 4 months of research. I decided that it was gonna come down to where I could find the best deal on either a Pioneer of a Onkyo. I hopped on Ubid one day and low and behold there was the DVD player I needed. I love this player the video and sound are amazing! The only thing I wish it did is play CD-R's. To me this is important, may not be for you, but now I have to buy a seperate CD player. Anyway, the quality is just great to see. I always look forward to turning it on.

Strength:

Excellent picture in normal mode. Offers excellent sound depending on receiver and outputs used.

Weakness:

Picture in dark mode looked gushy

excellent picture in normal mode with vg to exc color saturation. Tried analog audio outputs on my jvc DPL receiver. Good sound particulaly from cd. This unit is my friends and was hooked up to a Sherwood 8090 receiver. I tried both the analog and both digital outputs of the player into that receiver. I used a recoton coax that cost
$4 at Best Buys and a GE optical that has given me good results on other systems. The coax won out on clarity and detail into the 8090R playing both dvd and Cds with fine sound quality. Nice unit.

Strength:

Excellent audio

Weakness:

Some discs are a little noisy while playing. I have it housed in my entertainment center now, so I don't notice it.

My first review was just below this. Turns out that the problems I was having are due to my TV, I think. I bought a Toshiba 2200 model, and had the same "white bar" problem. Unless the Toshiba, which Onkyo borrows the video internals from, has some kind of funky problem with all players. I doubt it -- tis probably my TV.

I ended up keeping the Onkyo and sending back the Toshiba, which I THOUGHT would be identical in sound and video. Video was, but the Toshiba sound (with HDCD, mind you) was NOT as good as the Onkyo! No matter what outputs you use or how you compare, the Onkyo sounds warmer, more vibrant and alive. It reaches out a touches you.

After a few days, I fell in love with the audio of this player. It is so outstanding. The remote still stinks, but I'm gonna program my reciever's remote to do it all anyway, so I don't care anymore.

I have not had any major glaring problems. Minor ones were that the opening scene of The Matrix gave me some "digital boxes", but that just after I started PLAY after being on PAUSE. Otherwise, everything is awesome. Oh, and I did have a "Disc Error" while switching CD's once, but that was probably my fault for overloading it by making it do this then that quickly -- couldn't make up my mind what disc to listen to at the time, and I think I confused it. It just paused after 10 seconds, said "Disc Error", then fixed itself. No harm done.

I am very happy with the excellent deal I got on this unit. I'd give it 5 and 4 stars, but I'm giving it 5 all-around here to balance out my previous post as best as possible.

By the way, at just under and around $300, the Onkyo single-disc player is an absolute steal -- consider it!
