Strength:

Sturdy build, play one change five load feature. Simpicity of design

Weakness:

remote

I am a sales associate at circuit city...I send my customers here to review audio equippment and I just wanted to clear up some facts about this unit... First of all it is the best dvd changer I have seen under $500. Second there are very few dvd players on the market that will play cdr's or cdrw's. And third the dvc601 IS COMPATABLE with thx...in fact we use it for our thx demonstration in the sound room. Thx capability lies in your reciever. I have been overly pleased with the quality of this unit and I welcome consumers to try it out for themselves, especially if they are planning on using it as their cd player. The durability of this product is unmatched only succumbing to normal wear and tear, which it holds up to admirably. Might I add that it has gold plated component video outputs. I also challenge anyone to find a decent dvd remote in the under $500 price range. My sony 530d , which was a wonderful dvd player, had a remote of equvalent ease and functionality. The good news is that many reciever remotes are formatted to operate dvd players which I suspect to be the reason for poorly thought out dvd remotes. I love it an d you will too. P.S. my thoughts may or may not be those of my employer, I am solely speaking as a well-educated customer.

Strength:

Lots of features, sturdy build quality, 6 disc capacity

Weakness:

Remote is terrible, slow to load

This unit has lots of features and the 6 disc capacity is great! The build quality is typical of Onkyo, sturdy and huge. It's a bit slow to load discs but the sound and video quality is excellent. The remote is disappointing with no lit buttons as well as very small buttons which are crammed together.

Strength:

Great picture and sound when it works!!!

Weakness:

Unacceptably poor quality control!!!!

This is an ammendment to my earlier review. Although this unit puts out great picture and sound, the reliabilty of the 601 is a joke!!! It died after only five and a half months. It just won't recoginize andy DVDs or CDs. I've had it repaired three times, and still the piece of crap is dead!!!! Stay away from this unit, unless you want to use it as a doorstop.

Strength:

6 CD/DVD/VCD changer
Black Level Control
Excellent video and sound reproduction
Plays DVD Audio discs flawlessly

Weakness:

REMOTE Control (C'mon Onkyo, make something better for this unit)
No Random feature playing CD's

I saw this unit on Ebay, and I could not pass the price. After I already purchased it, I looked on this site for reviews on it. (Which was really dumb, and I should have looked first!) Upon reading them, I felt skeptical about the performance of it, and was worried. Once I got it out of the box, it is a mammoth player, and solidly built. I hooked it up to my receiver, and directly to my TV using a S-Video connection, which gives my DVD's a better picture. I am thoroughly impressed with my DVD video playback, as well as the fullness of the sound from my DVD audio collection. My regular CD's also sound superb, and there has been no defects to this player whatsoever. I highly recommend this DVD player, both for the novice and audio enthusiast. I feel you won't be dissappointed.

Strength:

This is a worthless piece of junk.

Weakness:

Reliability is zero.

This is an update to my review in June. I actually have not seen the thing since before June as it has been living at my authorized Onkyo repair facility, and at Onkyo. It is now living at Onkyo because the repair facility says that they do not have a clue how to fix it.
I have had to battle with Onkyo because they have decided that they do not want to honor warranties on items bought from Crazy Eddie (despite the fact that, I am told, they have to).
I have spent three months caught in the middle of Onkyo advising me to sue Crazy Eddie, and Crazy Eddie advising me to sue Onkyo.
To their credits, Onkyo finally relented and consented to fix it (one time repair - they don't want to see it again). That was a month ago. Have not seen it yet. Crazy Eddie has promised to give me my money back plus shipping, when (if?) I get it back.
This product is a poor design, and is rife with problems, or potential problems.
There is a very good chance that it will not work reliably, and a very good chance that it will never be able to be satisfactorily repaired when it goes belly up (assuming you win the argument with Onkyo and they try to repair it).
If you like riding around with your DVD player in your car delivering it here and there, and "get off" on arguing for hours on the phone to get people to do stuff that they have promised to do, buy this unit.
If you want to watch some movies, buy something else. Anything else.

Strength:

6-disc changer, beatiful sound & picture

I purchased this unit after returning a Sony DVP-C660 because of an irritating hissing/whiny noise coming from the unit and after reading reviews on this site about Onkyo. I am pleased with this unit as it does what I expect it to do: play all dvds with flawless picture and sound. I wanted a changer out of convenience.

I don't need the ability to play CD-Rs but I can't figure out why these dvd manufacturers don't make it a priority to provide this capability. Just about everyone who writes a review requires CD-R ability.

There were little "niceties" with the Sony unit such as the ergonomically designed remote (at least compared to the Onkyo) and the ability to provide an on-screen index of the loaded discs and to somewhat label dvds.

On that note, a shortcoming of all dvd players is the ability to provide an automatic index of disc titles. For single disc dvd players it is not a big deal but it should be standard on multi-disc players.

All and all the Onkyo is a very solid unit at a decent price.

Strength:

Great picture quality, tons of features, crystal clear sound, easy to use basic features, zoom

Weakness:

no random function for ALL discs, hard to program tracks

This is my first DVD player. It is GREAT! It has tons of features which I haven't even figured out yet. Even though the CD player sounds WONDERFUL,I did not purchase this player to replace my cd player so the lack of the random feature for all discs does not bother me. I have it hooked through the optical input on the ONKYO TX-DS777(B).

The sound from the Matrix was unexplainable. I watched Amistad and the realism was scary. My Infinity Sterling Series speakers and Yamaha YST-200 subwoofer came ALIVE!!!
I'm glad I live in a detached dwelling!!!(I'm sure my neighbors are glad too!) I replaced my Kenwood Dolby Surround receiver which I usually watched movies on my VCR. I enjoy how you can hear every detail of the movies. I don't know if it's my receiver or the DVD or both! I'm loving it though.

This unit is rather HUGE. It is hanging out the back of my audio rack. Make sure that your furniture will accomodate such a deep unit.

Strength:

Quality, picture and sound, layout, feels well-built

Weakness:

large.

After buying the 434, 503 and the SD5109 and returning them all...I decided to try the Onkyo. This unit is the best of the bunch! It feels REALLY well built, it is very quiet and quick when changing DVD's and the sound quality sounds crisp. I'm extremely happy with this choice. Compared to the Pioneers I tried it's in a totally different league. It looks really nice next to my Onkyo receiver too. The remote is easy to use but a big large too. The unit itself is relativly big but not overly so.

For $329 there is not a better multi-dvd unit on the market. If you don't believe me, buy a few other brands and try them out, return the ones you didn't like, the Onkyo will come out on top!

Strength:

When it plays it's nice

Weakness:

It doesn't worl!

I have had this unit for less then 3 months and it is dead.

I had small hitches with it early on but tonight I tried watching a movie and it just died. I will not recognize any discs. I tried several DVDs and Cd's as well. All originals no copies and no go.

Very disappointed in this product and would say buyer beware, you get what you pay for.
