Strength:
Picture, sound and built quality
Weakness:
No DTS This is a solid DVD player and the fact that it's Gold makes it even more so. I've had this player for a year and a half and it has perform consistently well in that time. Picture and sound were stunning. The tray mechanism is rock sturdy and is very smooth. |

Fantastic picture and easy to use. Not a lot of bells and whistles but everything you need to make you happy. Works great if you have an Onkyo reciever etc because of the remote capabilities. I've got it running to a 32" Sony and the picture is fantastic. I recommend it and have never had a problem over the past year. |

I wanted a high quality CD player only, but was enticed to try this DVD player as an alternative. I was considering the Arcam Alpha 7, and on listening to both I really prefered the sound and warmth of the Onkyo. Great product, go and get one! |

Bought a demo model for $400. Was not dissappointed at all. Has all the features you would expect.I dont think i could expect any better video quality. Might want to check out new 5-Disc DVD by sony and pioneer. A little cheaper and can hold 5 DVD's. |

Excellent player w/ all the features at an economy price. When my CD player went down, I used this as my audio source component also, and it filled in very well. To date I have had no troubles w/ disk incompatibilities. |

This is a very good DVD/CD Player. The picture is awsome and the remote control is very easy to use. I paid $299 at Sound Track about 10 months ago. This unit is an excellent buy. If you can find one, grab it! |

Strength:
Good build quality and aesthetics. Display can be turned off. Elapsed/remain time indication.
Weakness:
No DTS output. Does not output analogue signal and AC-3 bitstream simultaneously on DVD movies. OSD displays shoddy looking. A bit pricey even for that time. I've had this product for about a year and a half and it has given me excellent service. DVD was just making its appearance in my country when I bought it and so I felt like one of the privileged few out there. Sound and picture are superb as is to be expected of this format. It plays PAL and NTSC formats perfectly. |

Strength:
CD sound, component video jacks, dual lenses, on screen display, faultless video performance
Weakness:
Expensive when first introduced I wanted a DVD player that was a competent CD player as well for a separate HT system. I liked the fact that the Onkyo DV-S501 has dual laser pickups to optimize either DVD or CD media. Component video out was another feature that I wanted for the future. The on-screen menu makes setup an easy task. The video is great, I have nothing to even fault it for. The remote is nothing special but functional. No glithces, no tracking problems or lip-sync trouble. I use it with my HT system which is an Onkyo 828THX/ED901 DD decoder.
