Strength:
This player had great features when it worked of course.
Weakness:
Very Unreliable I bought the DVD player around October 2000. Around June 2001 the player started to skip and pixelate. I thought of course it must be that the DVD discs are scratched or something but I treid every disc I had and they all did it. Then the menus started freezing up on me so I thought it must be the player. I called Panasonic and they told me that the labor warranty was only 90 days and the parts warranty was good for a year. A lot of help that does me now. They said the average cost of repair for my player was around $125. Might as well buy another player for that cost. Then for sure I know it won't screw up again. Especially if I don't buy a Panasonic brand this time. DON'T WASTE YOU'RE TIME AND MONEY ON ANY PANASONIC BRAND ITEMS. BIG RIP-OFF!!! |

Strength:
It works sometimes...
Weakness:
It works some times... I received this model in May(?) 1998. It worked fine for a while but latly it has been developing the pixiliation problems and has been freezing up for no apparent reason. The little boxes appear on screen at various times and the picture freezes or skips. Various features on certian disk (Alien) will not function. broken About six months after I bought this unit it started to skip, freeze, and pixilate. I was amazed to read the reviews here and find that many other users are having the same problem. I would strongly advise against buying any Panasonic equipment. Obviously, they are producing defective units by the thousands and not taking responsibility for it. Thank gosh they don't make tires. |

Manufacturing defects...laser pickup unit. I needed to have the the laser pickup replaced (just like anybody else who owns one of these). It was outside the 90 day warrantee (by only a month) and Panasonic would not cover it although this problem was inherent to this model. |

nothing spectacular
Weakness:
After 4 months of use, pic begins to break up, unit freezes, and finaly will not read DVDs at all. Service center is the poorest I've ever seen I purchaced this unit with hopes that it would last at least 3 years with proper care and maint. In the begining, this unit was great. After arriving home after a 2 month absence, I found that it was intermittent. This unit had only been used for about 2 months, and was kept in a cool, dustfree place for 2 months. The first signs were an occasional blip. after 2 more days, it would not recogize the DVD at all. Customer service would not replace or repair it. Feeling like I was being taken for a ride, I purchaced another one and placed the old unit in the box and returned it 3 hours later for a full refund. The new unit worked fine for about 6 months. It now has the same problem. Since Panasonic will not even recognize that it has sold thousands of these faulty units with inherent problems let alone repair them, I think its only fair to warn everyone to stay completely away from any and all units this company makes. If Panasonic goes out of buisiness as a result, we would all be better off. I am an electronic engineer and I build things that work and last for a long time. What's Panasonics excuse? Strength:
price
Weakness:
quality is horrible Bought the unit end of Sept. 98, it was dead January of 99. Calls to Panasonic, shipping to their PA repair center, having it returned untouched, more calls, e-mails, another shipment to the repair center and a ton more e-mails have made me realize that while the price was great, you get what you pay for... I have never had any problems with Panasonic products in the past, and this has been a huge disappoinment - what should've been fixed under warranty has not become a "$207 for laser pick-up assembly replacement" problem. Panasonic customer service basically boils down to one line "That is our policy". Stay away from this product, and for that matter from the brand. 90 day warranty on labor is horrible - most other manufacturers offer a year at least. I'd give it 0 stars, but it's not available |

Strength:
Easy to use remote, reliable, great picture quality, inexpensive
Weakness:
no DTS output The Panasonic DVD-A105U has worked reliably for me from the time I bought it, July 1998. I have experienced no problems with it whatsoever. All the DVDs I played in it plays perfectly. I can even play Robocop:Critetion Edition without a problem, contrary to what a fellow reviewer wrote. The price was right. I have also used the Sharp DVD-600U. The Panasonic is superior in almost all ways. The DVD-A105U could also play all the Video CDs that I have whereas the Sharp player could handle only 2 out of the 30 Video CDs I have. The only problem with the DVD-A105U is that it lacks a DTS output. Other than that, it is a great player. |

Strength:
Nice picture, good sound
Weakness:
It simply doesn't work half the time. Skips, freezes and pixilates even after Panasonic "repaired" it. As mentioned in my prior comments I had problems with this unit freezing and pixilating on discs after only four months of use (purchased 12/98). After many weeks and annoying phone calls back and forth to Panasonic, they agreed to repair it. It worked from about 7/99 until this spring, when problems have reappeared. On a disc like "The Insider" it may play fine one time and then the next start gagging and freezing through most of the film. Something was not right with this player and Panasonic apparently never cared to recall and replace them properly, in my opinion. The one star for value is due to the fact that it seems to be a defective model in general, since everyone seems to have had these issues. If not for this, it would be a fine product. Picture and sound quality
Weakness:
pixelation on some dvd's, product reliablity Loved this player when I received it as a Christmas Gift in December of 1998 from my mother. I found the player to be extremely user friendly and that it delivered a picture on my Mitsubishi big screen T.V. that rivaled by laser disc player. I also found that it was a capable Cd player as well. Then less than one year later, after minimal use, I put a DVD in and "NO DISC" appeared ! Same with a CD. Unplugged the unit then replugged, "NO DISC". My guess is that the laser pickup has died a premature death. Have not attempted to have this player repaired due to the horror stories I have read on these pages. I feel that it is time to look at a player not made by Panasonic. I may look at a Phillip Magnavox as I have had extremely good luck with electronics I have used ( my LD and a CD player over 11 years old and still going strong without any repairs).
