So far, so good: the player does everything it's supposed to, and pretty well at that, with no problems. For one of the cheapest units to be had, I'm completely satisfied.

After returning my Sony 500D due to lack of DTS output, I checked out the Panasonic A-110. It had DTS output and it looked pretty cool too. After about 3 months of use I noticed some serious problems, it wouldn't
play certain movies or it would seriously screw with picture and sound
and then it would turn off. Strange. After being screwed by Sears who
took a little over 6 weeks to notify me of the problem I knew it had,
and another 3 to get the parts. Well after about 2 weeks without my player
I took my business elsewhere. I got my money back from Sears and bought a
Panasonic A-120 because the 120 added component out and the glitches were
supposedly fixed. The performance of the Panasonic shocked me. It's picture
was better than the Sony (although I loved my Sony, but no DTS and the 530D didn't come out for another month, so ...) for less. I couldn't be happier with the player, although the controller sucks and the unit is a bit cheap looking and ugly, it's still a great player. It will do fine until I get the Sony 7700 in September.

I have owned this unit for 2 months now. I compared the Toshiba 3109, Sony 530 (330 wasn't out yet) and the A120. Toshiba didn't have all the features I wanted so it came down to sony vs. Pan. Frankly I wanted to like the Sony the best. I've generally had good luck with their stuff and knew I'd be considering the 835 when I bought a new DD receiver (which I did - see Sony 835 review) and wanted to continue using S-link, etc. I liked the automatic detection circuit in the 530 for the "best" audio available but its the only meaningful feature missing from the Panasonic. In the store (Best Buy) there was no diff in the pictures. At home was another story. The Pan just had more saturated colors and looked crisper w/o that "digital grain" that some seem to have. I was viewing on a decent 32" monitor.
That made my decision.
In the past months use it has only had a pixelization problem 1 time with Aliens about halfway through.... it pixelized, muted the audio, tried to come back (pic and aud), did the same again....and then continued on like nothing had happened. I have watched this disc twice more and it DIDN'T repeat the problem so I'm not going to downrate it.
Now that I DO own a Sony 835 it would be nice to have the "Sony integration" but performance was my only real criteria so I still believe I made the right choice.
I had reviewed this unit before but it was a duplicate site that has since been deleted...

I read a good review of the 120 in Home Theater Magazine and was in the market so I went to my regular retailer "Wacky Websters"(don't ask).I loved the unit and headed out to buy my first DTS disk.On the "Eagles Hell Freezes Over" disk i could not get the one track to play(New York minute).I returned the disk as defective and got "The Jackal".When I played this one lo and behold it started freezing up around the same area.I took the player back to wackys and showed them.
They did not have a 120 in stock so I got the A JVC xv-501.After reading the reviews here I listened for dropouts that had been noted on DTS disks.Thsy dropouts were indeed there.

I returned the JVC and my new 120 arrived today. After a week with each player before I must say despite the cool features of the JVC.The spartan Panasonic has better Audio and video and a better feel(you audiophiles know what I mean by that).Panasonic was aware of the problem with the brakups and there is a fix available from a Panasonic service center.

I purchased the A-120U for a little over a week now. It works really well. Plays DVD faster than you can turn the TV on, so make sure all your components are ready to go before popping in the disc. So far, I have not seen any flaw that others have mentioned with this unit. Picture quality is superb and sound is great. I love the clarity on DVD. I guess once you tried it, you just can't go back. Anyone knows what promotions does Panasonic has for the A120U? I only see 15 free rental from Netflix and I thought I saw 5 free DVD from somewhere but I can't find it. If anyone knows, please drop me a line. Thanks!! Overall, this unit works great, so I'm gonna give it a 5!

I recently purchased the DVD A120 as a second DVD Player since I already own the DVD A110. Got it from UBID.COM for $260 shipped. I played The Concert for Amnesty International and got serious pixelization problems around Tracy CHapmans set and also experienced serious problems at the end of You've Got Mail. Tried to get a RMA from UBID, but they suggested that I take advantage of my Panasonic warranty and after discovering that there was a service center nearby I took it to get fixed. I haven't had any problems since getting it back. Although the DVD120 has more features, I feel as though the A110 is an overall better machine and I'm sure alot of people would agree with me on that. I hear about people having alot more trouble with this model than its predecessor. But for $260, I couldn't go wrong.

Everything

Weakness:

Nothing

I bought this unit about 2 months ago from Circuit City for $300. I have to say that I couldn't have spent my money any better. The video is awesome, even on a low-end TV with just the composite video hook-ups. I have the audio hooked up to a Denon AVR2700 and Infinity front, center, & surrounds. The audio seems to be perfect, although I've noticed that some DVDs play softer or louder than others, but this is probably just differences between the DVDs' peak recording level.
The remote is rather awkward to use, but I simply taught the Denon remote the Pan's basic functions and tossed the Pan remote in the drawer to collect dust.
Some rather nice features I like are the component video out (which my next TV will have inputs for), a very easy-to-use GUI, and of course, a very good price. It does lack a little when it comes to looks and the on-unit controls, but who really cares much about these things when you're watching a movie anyway??
I've been happy with this unit for 2 months, and I'm pretty sure I will be for much longer.

Strength:

Fantastic picture, easy to use menu system, great remote

Weakness:

none that i can think of

I purchased this at ValueAmerica for 200 bucks using their value dollars. This DVD player is outstanding.

It has component video output for those with compatible TVs. I use S-Video as I don't have component video jacks on my TV.

For those who do not have 4-5 speaker setups, it has a Virtual Surround Sound feature which produces a rear speaker effect.

The picture is awesome and the menu system is extremely easy to use.

Strength:

Great picture, great price. I purchased it because of good things I had heard about it and I am not disappointed. Both types of digital inputs, something that was not always there on comparably priced models.

Weakness:

buttons on the remote are kinda small, but you get used to it. Profile is a little taller than the Toshiba 2109 (other one I was considering) but I prefer performance to looks.

As I stated above, I'm completely satisfied w/my Panasonic A120. I think it's a great player for the price (around $300). Has a great picture, great sound, etc. Only complaint is the remote buttons are a little small, and sometimes hard to find when you have the lites turned down.

Similar Products Used:

none.
