Strength:

5 disc changer for both DVD and CD. Great sound and picture quality.

Weakness:

None that I can spot.

Let me begin by saying I am not an audiophile, but my standards generally exceed the typical, casual audio/video user. I spent quite a bit of time researching DVD players; checking prices, capabiltiies and user reviews. This is the first DVD player I have owned and I am more than satisfied with the choice. This unit out of the box has performed flawlessly in playing both CD's and DVD's. I frankly can't find anything serious enough to complain about. Is this the best DVD player Is it the best CD player? Probably not on both counts - but then for the price I paid, $300 I wasn't expecting it to compete with a $1000 DVD player or a $500 audiophile standard CD player. I doubt though on my current video display a $1000 unit would show all that much better and I suspect the CD qulaity is not that indistinguishable either. Fact is that at its price, combining both playback fuctions with the apparent quality that it does makes this just maybe be the best bargain going right now in a 5 disc DVD/CD changer. No regrets so far. Highly satidified.

Strength:

5 Disc Tray

Weakness:

Doesn't Play CD-R Discs.

I bought this machine online at Mercata, thinking it would be a good buy. DVD plus 5 disc CD changer in one! But, after using it for a week, I found that it would randomly skip on some DVDs. Sometimes it would play straight through without any problems. However, other times it would just randomly skip like crazy. About 2 out of 3 DVD skipped!

Every DVD that skipped on this machine played fine on a Panasonic A120. Maybe it's just a defective machine, but this sucker was a pain in the butt.

I wasn't too crazy about the looks either. Frankly, it was U-G-L-Y. Plus, the LED indicators for the DISCs in the tray were pretty much useless. The fact that it didn't play CD-R discs was also a big letdown.

In the end, everything I tried didn't stop the skipping. Luckly I was able to return it to Mercata for a full refund. I bought a Philips DVD825 to replace it. Ever since then, I've been a happy camper!

I do own this unit....and I wish I did not. It may have a high-end transport system (whatever that is) and it looks and sounds okay to my eyes and ears, but the design is so hard to get used to! The display is so uninformitive, the disc lights are meaningless and the drawer only closes by pushing a button! (Not very well thought out on the design end!) This ruins the unit as far as I am concerned. It is cheap for a five disc player, I will say that for it. BILLY

Reliability

I have ownd this unit since 9/99. Its in repair for the third time now. Started acting up 12/99. Total time in repair now exceeds 2 months. Specific problems: unrecoverable pixellation on DVD layer transition, shuttle adjustment/alignment, no picture, no picture or sound, location problems after 1 or 2 hours.

I'm glad to see that others have had a little better luck. This unit will play CORRECTLY formatted CD-RW's for music and Video

Cheap, DTS, Dolby D

Weakness:

Remote

I bought this because I can load 5 disks in it. However, one of my babies (I have two) stuck a disk in the tray incorrectly and pushed close. Well, to make a long story short, I had to take it to Panasonic to fix/remove the disk. Their comment was, "Be real careful about putting the disks in because there are a lot of moving parts". Other than that, Dolby Digital is amazing. I just sunk about $1,600 into a receiver and speakers and it is a quantum leap beyond Pro Logic. In any case, this is a great unit if I can just get my babies to leave it alone!

Also, I was unable to watch American History X on this unit (I tried two different copies of the movie) and Panasonic cleaned something inside the unit when I brought it in. I haven't checked to see if it will play on it. Also, The Piano (at the end only) was skipping as well.

Strength:

Excellent Video performance.

It seams that there are a lot of young kids and collage punks making reviews by a whim. This product is not a one star product nor is it a five star, but it is a player with a good price/performance and decent features, carries an excellent video signal, and has a half decent DAC. If all of these 'one star voters' actually sat down and evaluated the players video and/or audio performance. Then Posted and HONEST review. The Norm would be about 4-5 stars.

Yes the disc lights can get a little annoying. But it's not that big of a deal, and they do work.

Come on guy ...gimmie a break.

This site is loosing credibility buy stupid un-thought-out reviews of product that aren't properly evaluated.

Strength:

Excellent video detail, above average DAC

Weakness:

A little weak in the ergonomics dept. But acceptable.

The C220 offered the best price/performance. The Panasonics have not had the quality control issues that the Sonys and Toshibas have had.
Panasonic DVD Players are not the top of the line when it comes to DVD, but you sure do get good quality and features for the price.

Control Functions. What's up with that?

I don't know what all the ranting and raving is about, viciously knocking this unit. I've had it for about one month. The picture quality is comparable to the Sony or Toshiba. The sound quality is noticeably better than my old 5 CD changer on the newer CD's. Yeah, I admit the control functions and the remote are set up poorly. I have no problems with disc skipping that others reported. The CD disk number indicator is too small, but the orange and green lights work fine. How is the unit supposed to know if you have put a CD or DVD in the drive if it doesn't scan the disk? You guys should lay off that one! Once it scans the disk, the lights work fine! However, when you open the drawer, the two disks that are exposed default to the green CD color. They should, in theory, go out, until the unit scans them. I admit some design issues with that, as well as the remote, but the value is exceptional. The on-screen display seems very informative. I bought mine for $397 at onecall.com.

The product isn't that hard to figure out. Most people don't like the lights on the front indicating (or supposed to be indicating) which trays have CDs or DVDs in them. How it works is that when you open the tray, the disc trays that were exposed now light up - assuming that you put a disc in them, whether or not you did. This is designed to help you know where you put the discs once you close the tray. You just have to disc skip through the five discs to get a correct reading (not the most fun but the Panasonics are extremely fast at rotating). Most people don't like the lights because they want perfection - what would you expect a player to do, know how much a disc weighs and turn the light on when you "feel" one in your tray - I don't think so.
Also, most people don't like the fact that you can't close the tray while pushing on it (you have to press the open/close button). But this is actually good because pressing on the tray causes strain over time on the closing mechanism.

This DVD player has the same processor that the A-120u has (and that has been rated extremely well by many Home Theater Magazines and on this website) it just has a changer to boot! The pictures are crips and the sound quality is just as good. The remote is average but you can get used to it.

Overall this is a very good product and just about any review that says otherwise has either never actually used it at home or is just speculating off of other rumors. The Panasonics have not had the quality control issues that the Sonys and Toshibas have had. Panasonic DVD Players are not the top of the line when it comes to DVD, but you sure do get good quality and features for the price.

Above average is my rating~

Strength:

Haven't had one problem yet. Haven't found any incompatable DVDs.

Weakness:

Won't play CD-R's. Bummer!

I have been very happy with this player. I got it for almost half price new back in 1999. That's the benefit of having friends in high places I guess. I did seem to misplace the manual. If anyone reading this knows where I can find one posted on the net, let me know. Sure wish these companies would provide manuals online these days.

Great DVD player!
