Strength:

Good video and audio quality Has worked for a long time Good construction and features.

Weakness:

Slightly big and clunky Grainy picture

This DVD player was my first, and is currently being used on by home theater set-up. This set-up is far inferior to my stereo system. The picture quality is very good, but sometimes is slightly grainy even though it is going through the component output. The DVD audio feature is basically wasted on me, but the six channel analogue output is used. It seems to be very accurate and provides good sound quality Vs. digital out. When I bought the player it was a good value for the features. It also has a ton of buttons and features that missing on today's cheapo DVD players. It is also very solidly built and looks like a high end peice. Lastly it has passed the test of time for lasting all of these years. On a side note, a friend of mine has been through four different DVD players with one breaking after another.

Strength:

great player and concept if it keeps working

Weakness:

breaks after warranty expires

I got the famous h02 error on the player loved it till then will never buy another panasonic product and I suggest you dont buy one. Its funny that the mention of this error in other various Panasonic models always happens right after the warranty expires.

Strength:

5 very smooth Slow Motion Speeds. Great Price !

Weakness:

Slow Disk Ejection. No Gamma Control.

I have to review this unit by the amount of performance for the cost. At a price of $120 (Before tax & Postage) there is no DVD player for that price which comes close. The 4X oversampling Video Technology really does improve the picture. It shows better contrast, Sharper and more accurate picture. Not everyone has a Progressive Scan cabaple Televison. But everyone want the benefits the progressive scan DVD players have to offer. This is the Only DVD player able to offer the benefits of progressive scan video without the need for a Progressive capable Televison. Whats also great about this player is all the audio outputs. Many DVD players now have only one set of RCA type Audio Output jacks. The rest are Coaxial and Digital. This player also has those outputs. The Video Controls offer adjustment of Brightness, Contrast, & Color. The Audio Controls offer sperate Virtual surround controls for Small speakers and headphones. The Remote is a nice size and works well. Unlike the JVC Player remotes which are bulky and have too many usless buttons. Chapter Search works instantly. There are 5 Smooth Fast Scan Speeds, and 5 very smooth Slow Motion Speeds. Add all that , plus this player also plays DVD AUDIO disks , includes a Headphone Jack with Volume contols. For $120 its the best ,and I would compare it equally to many more expensive Progressive Players!

Strength:

Sharper, brighter, more detailed picture. DVD Audio & DVD Menu Chapter Direct Track access on front panel.

Weakness:

No Gamma or Video Noise Reduction control. No REMAINING TIME counter for DVD movies.

I dont have a Progressive Scan player. But I do have a 35 " RCA TV. This is the only availablr DVD player that allows the user to enjoy the benefits of Progressive Scan DVD players. Without the use of a Progressive Scan capable TV. The picture improvement is immediately evident in a comparison between this and the Panasonic RV 31 Player. You will see a Sharper, brighter picture. The fact that this is also a DVD -AUDIO player is a big bonus! I was able to purchase this at a closeout price of $120 Which is less than I paid for the RV-31 !

Strength:

Very good to exceptional DVD-A sound, DTS/DD5.1 sound.

Weakness:

Unreliable. Poor picture quality when it did work.

Well....what can I say? After going through the thorougly frustrating A310 debaucle, I went ahead and purchased this unit about 7 months ago. The picture was nowhere near the quality of the A320 I replaced the A310 with. Faded, slightly 'fuzzy', without brilliance and detail. Sound quality was outstanding in both DTS/DD5.1 and DVD-A modes. Regrettably, after 7 months of service, once again a Panasonic DVD player that I paid good money for went on the fritz. It would appear that this unit suffers from what I can only assess as 'poor reliability'. At first, I noticed considerable 'flicker'. When I went to change discs to determine fault, the unit ceased to function. Would not spin up. Removing the lid and manually starting it resulted in intermittant operation, with the disc usually lasting about 5 minutes before the motor stopped again. I do not relish the prospect of dealing with Panasonic's CS again, the last episode is still unresolved. Quite honestly, I shouldn't have to. The player should work. 2 out of 3 players I purchased of this brand do not, that speaks to unreliability. I can honestly say that I will NEVER, EVER buy another Panasonic product again. Not even an alkaline battery.

Strength:

Dvd-Audio

Weakness:

Slow reading discs. Long wait between choosing Dvd-A Songs.

I did not purchase this player to watch movies with. I'm rather particular when it comes to sound and I wanted to demo Dvd-Audio as soon as it was possible. This unit makes a spectacular subject for review as it is very low-end. That means that the most economical parts and assembly were used in it's construction. Normally, that is a very bad thing. In this case, we were able to compare the audio quality of this unit against a good-quality compact disc setup to find out if Dvd-Audio is worthwhile. This meant that we didn't hook it up in my sound-room. My vintage all-tube amplification equipment can make the worst-produced recordings sound like magic. Naw, I needed a less-refined setting for my experiment. I took the thing straight from the store to my friend's house. He owns a decent Sony receiver and since the digital to analog converter is in the receiver, the digital output from the RA-60 would be guarnteed to pass through the same DA converter. After a brief selection of a title to compare(There aren't too many at Best Buy yet), we settled on Stone Temple Pilots landmark album, "Core". First we listened to it in Dvd-A. This is no production masterpiece mind you, but all the better. This way we wouldn't be swooned by a superb recording's charms. When we put in a regular Cd of "Core", we were astonished at how similar the Cd sounded. It sort of made it seem that high-definition audio was useless. That was, however; until we put the Dvd-A version back in. And there it was. Detail and clarity were much improved. Definition and an "airness" was evident. It was a slight, yet decent improvement that made my mid-fi friend say, "It's like it gots tubes". Yes, that seemed to hit the nail on the head. The improvement was much like playing a regular Cd on my discrete Dual Mono tube system. A warm, detailed sound with impressive, soft vocals. Now with this Dvd-A, we were hearing a lot of that warmth and detail in an entire mid-fi setup that is worth one-tenth of my equipment. Between Dvd-A and a regular Cd, the sonic difference is worth paying for. It's subtle, but huge in terms of price. If a low-cost Dvd-A player can almost bridge the gap between mid-fi solid state and hi-fi tube, could you imagine what a hi-fi Dvd-A player must sound like? Vinyl????? My only worry now is that this this or any high-definition digital audio format wil

Strength:

Very, very good DVD and Audio performance

Weakness:

NONE.

I've had this unit for about a week and I'm very satisfied user. I think it has very good DVD playback (viewing on my 32 inch Sony WEGA). The fact that you could adjust the video settings on the player itself makes it even more of a great unit. Besides the stregnth of it's video performance they throw in the "audio only" button that cuts out the video circuits for a more pure sound. And on top of that it's also capable of DVD-A !!.. I know I've had it for a short time so I could not speak of any reliability issues, but so far it's a winner...

Great picture after tweak. Built in decoders with MultiChannel Bass MAnagement.

Weakness:

Visiblle scan lines, user interface stinks.

Finally copped this yesterday to replace crappy PS2. At first I was disappointed because I saw the scan lines everyone talks about, but I figured out a fix but only if you own a Sony WEGA tv. Heres the trick; set the dvd player to 16:9, then set the tv to 16:9 enhanced. Voila!, no scan lines, excellent picture. It is very smooth and sharp, with great color. I havent used the dvd-a yet.

Strength:

Solid performance

Weakness:

I don''t see the benefit of the 54Mhz DAC vs my 4 year old Panny a 115. I think it is a marketing gimmick.

Good player but I''m still puzzled where the performance comes in??? 54 MHZ processor produces same picture quality as my older panny a 115 dvd player. I thought I was going to be blown away by the performance, but that was not the case, as there was no difference between this player and my older one in terms of pic quality. Besides, logic tells me if 54MHZ was such a great piece of technology, wouldn''t you think every other dvd player manufacture would be on the bandwaggon. I repeat , the 54MHZ is a selling gimmick. Don''t get me wrong the picture is very good as are all panny dvd players as they are free of the chroma bug and they are built in Japan. Player shows some line artifacts via in player letterboxing, and the unit has a really nice picture with true vibrant well saturated colors. Best player I have seen for folks that have a square set is the toshiba 2705. Detail resolution is amazing but the player has been plagued with a poor power supply and non reliable laser. Too bad. In my opinion, the panny is a solid player with DVD audio as a bonus, but if you are simply looking for better picture quality , your better going with the RV 31 series. If you have hi-def ready set, then you are talking a whole diferent ball game and you should be checking out the toshiba 5700. Good Luck
