Strength:

Picture quality. Excellent sound. Aren't they the reasons why we buy this stuff?

Weakness:

Manual is very poor. Trouble with little blue light, on only when paused or using any feaure in the remote control but never when is supposed to be on.

Very impressed with picture quality. I thought that progressive scan was a marketting tool but it does make a difference. The sound is also very good. As an extra it plays MP3s. They should add a feature to be able to see JPEG pictures.

Strength:

12-bit/54MHz 4:4:4 progressive video; DD/DTS bitstream; menu screens are fairly intuitive; gold-plated RCA connectors; detachable power cord; reasonably quiet when playing.

Weakness:

blue light comes on when performing any remote function; noisy disc seek; takes a while to load and recognize media; no bass management for DVD-Audio.

The first thing I've notice was the picture quality, no chroma upsampling bugs, no artifacts, and the colors were pure. The picture was shifted over slightly to the left. There are posts on the web that will tell you how to correct this video problem. For movies, I use the user mode setting U1, and increase gamma to +2.

CD audio was a bit on the warm side but pleasant none the less. Later, I've decided to throw on Metallica's "The Black Album" DVD-Audio. Immediately I've notice that the sound was quite ambient with a distinct live feel to it. No, I'm not a heavy metal head, and I do listen to pop and jazz music as well. Too bad there's no bass management but I guess I can always pick up an Outlaw ICBM.

Do I recommend this player for music? No, not as good as some dedicated CD players. However, the shining video performance does gives this player a recommended thumbs up!
