Strength:

Quiet, Plays CD-R/RW's and MP3's!, Smooth scan forward, Great resume dvd/cd where you left off feature, Ability to Calibrate the DVD image from the DVD itself which leaves you the option of having a setting for your TV and one specially calibrated for DVD/VCD playback.

Weakness:

No random MP3 playback, Unintuitive On-screen menu and interface, Will downconvert a 96khz 24bit signal when the software is write protected.

In regards to features and functionality, DVD player's have gone a long way. However, in regards to audio/video quality there's nothing to write home about. Quality in that regard has been the same ever since 3rd/4th generation DVD's came out. Don't expect to be blown away by a pleasant change in video/quality from DVD's two to three years ago and the ones that are just coming out.

That said, I bought this DVD Player because my almost 4 year old Pioneer's drive mechanism finally gave up and it costs less to buy a new one than to repair it. I specifically went for this Panasonic because it is one of the better interlaced DVD players at downconverting a video image without adding unnecesary motion artifacts or noise. This also plays MP3's which sold me over the new Sony DVD Player which can also play CD-R/RW's.

The weaknesses I state are really minor issues I really cannot complain about. Once you get used to the on-screen menu it's not really that unintuitive. In regards to the downconverting a 96/24 signal when the software being played is write-protected, it really is a bummer but just something minor since there really isn't as much 96/24 as there should be.

On the plus side, this DVD absolutely blew me away when playing MP3's. Paired up with my Denon AVR-3300 and NHT SuperOne's, MP3's sound fantastic! Regarding what the previous reviewer stated about no bass, he is right to some extent. There is a lot less bass than there used to be with my Pioneer, but then again, new hardware requires new calibration of your equipment, both audio and video wise.

In conclusion, this is a fantastic DVD Player and the fact that you can play MP3's and calibrate it to a desired image so you can have two different viewing settings (one on the TV for watching VHS or Digital Cable, etc.. and the other for watching DVD's) is great.

Had the panasonic rv30 and exchanged it for the new model rv31 which added a few new features such as being able to play cd-r & mp3 and bass booster for subwoofers, rotary dial for search was also added to this unit, new menu configuration (looks like a windows menu) I had no problems with the rv30 which I purchased in Febuary 2001,but after seeing the new features that were added to this unit I decided to return it to Sears and exchange it for the RV31 which I can now play my cd-r's on which I have a lot of.Its the same as the RV30 except a few bells & whisles

Strength:

Everything!!

Weakness:

No Coax out.

I haven't much experience with DVD players other than my Samsung on my computer and my in-laws DVD player. Compared to the $500.00 unit my in-laws bought, this unit definitely competes. It does everything their high dollar unit does and the picture quality is no different.

I have the Optical output routed through my Sony STR-DE845 and the sound is great. DTS comes out clear, a noticeable difference on SOME movie titles, not all. But that's no fault of the unit.

It's a popular model, and duely so. It is a good solid unit, excellent picture, many adjustable settings, and DTS compatible. ( you need a reciever with the DTS decoder )

You won't be disappointed at all.

Strength:

Quite opeeration, very fast seek times, good picture quality for the price, Plays CD-R,CD-RW, MP3

Weakness:

Audio quality is weak... Where's the BASS?!, no on screen menus for MP3, No coaxial digital out.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE 31 MODEL..NOT THE 30

Really a nice little unit for the price but the sound quality was unacceptable and I returned the unit. However picture quality is very good rivaling that of my JVC unit (that I finally decided upon) that was $100 more.

I was really interested in this unit for its MP3 support, and its ability to play CD-R(RW). However, I was very disappointed in the lack of an on-screen menus, which is a must have for MP3's where you can have up to 150 songs on a single disc.

The sound produced by the unit lacks that 'rich' sound produced from my other audio components, and is really lacking in the low frequency effects. ....Where's the Bass?.. My subwoofer hardly gets warmed up from this unit. Is it even on? Even my cheap APEX produces much better audio through a coaxial digital out. (Your forced to feed the audio through an optical out in the 31 if you want digital quality. This may be a problem for some who have older receivers...lucky for me it was not)

The picture quality is very good for an intrerlaced player in this price range. I did not notice any digital noise or colour artifacts in the Matrix or Gladiator (movies in which some players I have tested looked terrible).

Well for the price is not a bad unit, but if your looking for something in this price range, with these feature I would opt for the Hitachi DV415 (which I also tested), It preformed better than the Panasonic in the audio department, produced about the same picture quality on my 52" HDTV, lower price, and has enhanced MP3 support.

Cheers.

Strength:

Audio/Video quality,MP3 Playback,CDR/CDR-W/VCD

Weakness:

No random in MP3 playback

Waited a few years for MP3 and CDR playback to be available
for a DVD player. I was going to purchase the SAMSUNG 711
but it has been out of stock in Canada because it's an American product with only a US warranty.
The styling is gorgeous with practically no heat being
generated from playback even after a few hours.CD audio and
MP3 audio quality was just incredible especially being pumped through my Marantz SR7000 which I also purchased after reading the reviews in this posting.
The only gripe with this unit is no random playback available for MP3.5 stars all the way.

Strength:

Great Picture. Easy to use. Has never failed to play any disk.

Weakness:

NONE!!

I was lucky and got this DVD player free with my new 51" TV purchase. I was suppose to get the Toshiba but I have not been impressed with the quality of their units. I requested the Panasonic because of review I have read.
It has never missed a beat. Every DVD I have put in it, it has played flawlessly. When Gladiator first came out on DVD we went to rent it and the local video store said that it had been brought back by the previous customer because it would not play. I live close to the store so I convinced them to let me rent it anyways. Got home and popped it in and it played without a single skip or pause. Next day I went and bought the Movie. :)
I wanted a simple, functional DVD played with component and digital out without any decoder, to hook up to my Denon AVR-3801. This unit fit the price and description I was looking for. If there is anything about this unit I would change if I could, it would be the Startup screen. It just has a "DVD video" screen without a screen saver. I would like to see a screen saver added to prevent burnin if accidentaly left on.

Strength:

Quiet, Fast, Clear, and Inexpensive

Weakness:

May not handle scratched disks well (i.e., Rented disks)

A month or so ago I was looking for a new DVD player to upgrade my entertainment center. My main concern was that the unit have CD-R capabilities, as I frequent Napster, burn my own CD's, and planned to use the DVD player as a CD player as well. I found rave reviews on the Aiwa, tested it, found it to be too slow for my taste, and returned it in hopes that the "new" Panasonic would not only be faster, but would also play MP3 in "random".
Of the 2 Panasonic RV31 units that I tested both were very quiet, loaded quickly and easily, and almost convinced me that this was the unit for me. The RV31 will not play back MP3 randomly and it does not have an onscreen breakdown of your MP3 files like the Aiwa, but the picture and sound are good. My favorite strength for this unit is its ability to fastforward or reverse then stop on a dime when you hit play. Neither of the two Toshibas I tested will do this.
The drawback, and the reason I took both units back, was found on watching a rented disk with a small scratch. I rented Red Planet and at 48 minutes pixelization/distorted sound occurred for approx. 15 seconds. I tried the same disk in my 2109 - no problem. I bought the second Panasonic to test it - same thing.
As I rent most of my DVDs, I need a player that will handle scratches with ease. This one could not cut it. Maybe this movie was a fluke, maybe not. I could not risk it and subsequently bought the new Toshiba SD2700.
The Toshiba is not quite as slick (fast) nor as user friendly, but (so far) it has cut it.
I recommend this unit to anyone on a budget who plans to use clean disks (not scratched) or doesn't mind occasional jittering.

Weakness:

Does not play CD-R

Actual price paid was $297 cdn taxes included, Sears clearance sale. Have been comparing various models for months now with the idea that I would purchase this year's model which would play everything, but when I happened on this one (having previously read the reviews on it)I could not justify spending more money.

Was easy to set up, and after reading the manual and experimenting with the on screen menus was easily able to make changes to my satisfaction. Like being able to adjust the black, like the cinema mode, and the dialogue enhancer. The remote is not pretty, but functional and easy to locate what is wanted.

Picture is great and sound is great. Have only watched one DVD (Gladiator) but this is enough for me to know I prefer DTS over Dolby Digital.

A couple of perhaps small items I really liked - for one, the illuminated display can be dimmed, and secondly if the DVD being viewed is stopped, and not resumed for a short period of time ( I do not know for how long but it was left stopped for at least half an hour before I got back to it) the unit will appear to have shut itself off, and by that I mean the illuminated display has gone black. Press play, and the DVD picks up exactly where it was stopped. Just great.

For reference, I have a Pioneer 509 receiver with 4 Polk bookshelf speakers plus centre speaker and Quest sub.

It will not play CDR, but who cares, I have a CD player to do that.

All in all I am very pleased for having used it so little; I do not expect to be a frequent rentor or buyer of DVD, but will use it enough to appreciate what it does.

MP3 Multi Burn Session CD's

I have been holding out to buy a DVD player for the last year or so because I was waiting for the industry to get off their butt's and make a DVD that could play all of my CD's.
This includes all of my CDR's with all my MP3's on em.

So along comes the Panisonic DVD-RV31... MP3 compatiable...right?

Sort of. Just beware all of you MP3 head's... this machine will not play multi session burned CDR's. It will play what ever you burned on the first session, but if your like me and add to your CDR's all the time... be prepared.

Sure I'll use it for DVD movies and all the usual.. great picture, great sound stuff. The big selling point for me though was the ability to play my MP3's of a whole dics rather than having to hook my Nomad II up through my stereo and keep swapping Flash Cards.

Other than that the unit is great.
