Strength:

Great surround sound. Silent tray. Picture quality is decent.

Weakness:

Picture quality is too bright. Depth of colors seems faded.

Just bought the DVD player. Picture quailty is decent & sound quality is excellent. While playing the Matrix certain scenes seems to fade in and out.

Strength:

Lightweight, minimal noise, fast play and smooth scanning. Excellent remote (although not backlit)

Weakness:

A bit of flipping during Tommorrow Never Dies on first playback. Stopped DVD, reinserted and it hasn't happened since.

I have been going stir crazy for a year trying to shop out the best deal on a player. I wasn't sure if I wanted (or needed) built-in decoders, progressive scan, etc... I finally asked a salesman about my concerns. I was educated in about 2 minutes. I found this unit at a boxing day sale for $298.99 Canadian. All they had was silver. It looks very nice in my a/v room.

Excellent player. Easy to hook up to my stereo system. I was concerned about the video quality on my 6 year old 27" Panasonic but my fears were put to rest the second I put in Tommorow Never Dies. I had the volume to 20 and still could have taken more. Tarzan looked very nice also. I picked up U-571 and intend to watch it soon.

Highly recommended player!

Strength:

Nice construction. Excellent picture - a bit soft perhaps but very little artifacting. Remote was better than expected - nice size and shape but with some buttons set in odd places.

Weakness:

No zoom. No 5 RCA jacks for DD sound - optical hookup only.

Got this player on primarily the recommendations from this site. Thanks all!

I recieved the Apex AD703 (or was it the 731 - I forget) - a three disc unit for Xmas. But, the artifacts on the picture made it DVD's unwatchable - the picture looked like a series of badly mastered jpegs, one after another. So, back that went to the store and got the Panasonic instead. The difference is like night and day - the Panasonic is MUCH better. Even scenes in films that are tough for the DVD format to reproduce without artifacts (like foggy/smokey scenes) came through cleanly.

My main complaint is that the picture is a bit too soft. Even cranking up the sharpness all the way isn't enough on my TV to bring out all the detail. Nonetheless, this is a nice unit and I have few misgivings. Now, if only I could turn up the sharpness a bit more on my TV...

Strength:

So far, it has played badly scratched CD's from Blockbuster with no troubles. Excellent picture quality, good sound. I have read bad things about the remote but I see no problems with it. Solid construction, strong brandname. Interesting sub woofer output. I plan to use this feature since my older receiver has no sub woofer output. I think Panasonic really thought the design out well for first time buyers and good flexibility for long term upgrades. Offers both s-video, digital optical, and componont output for future upgrades. Perfect machine for my purposes. easy on-screen menu and set-up.

Weakness:

Lack of zoom.

Overall good, solid quality (Japanese-made, reasonable price). Hooked-up player sound through Technics receiver, Paradigm speakers, video directly into Sony Trinitron.

Strength:

Great Picture, No problems so far, Works perfectly with all problem disks, Great Sound, Nicer remote than most

Weakness:

Not many hook ups (buy the dvdRV65 or 80 if you need them)

I liked this player so much and the price that I got one for me and one for my brother. This is my first dvd player (after I took back the rca) and much research, and so far i'm very pleased with it...This is definitely the most bang for your buck.

Strength:

picture and sound quality, price

Weakness:

no coax digital out, toslink only

I am using this player in a two-channel audio system. If I planned to go into surround sound, I probably wouldn't have chosen it because it lacks a 24/96 coaxial output. I have it hooked to a 32" TV via the S-video connection.

I'm very impressed with the picture quality of this player. The extra detail, improved color, and lack of dot-crawl really amazes me. I have cable TV, and the DVD picture is a lot better.

Sonically, this unit is no slouch. I have an Arcam Alpha 8 CD player that sold for $1000 when new. I compared CD performance between the two players. The Arcam definitely presents more spatial information and low level detail and seems more tonally accurate. However, I think that most people would not perceive the audio differences as worth the $800 price difference.

If I were starting from scratch with a new system, I would probably get a DVD player and then get an outboard converter like an MSB Link DAC as the upgrade path.

Strength:

Just about everything!

Weakness:

on-screen icons a bit small

I finally took the jump into dvd. This is a fine
player with no glaring weakness! It's prog-scan
brother the 56 was only about 2 feet away (and 45$
more!) at the store, but I need a better tv first.
Picture and sound are fine with no problems. On
a much bigger and better dispplay will probably
reveal any weakness in picture quality. At this price
it is almost disposable...

UGHH id like to thank
God for this honor of being such a sweet @$$ DVD PLAYER
also to list DVD player by ratings and see this one stick out w/ almost a 5 * rating next to $800 players is Funny $ h ! 1

Weakness:

NIT PICKING but no ZOOM , and the number buttons dont seem to take you directly to the chapter o well it has a few fetures that will make you not even care about that

The Video is nice and sharp IM only using standard RCA's but it looks nice
The Audio is Great on my 400 watt Kenwood XD-a81 mini system
2 subs plus 2 front channel and pro logic surround
the VSS with the stereo off is also really nice it sounds like the surround is coming further from the sides. There is also a nice feature called dialogue enhance
Overall it has everything I could want in this department.
The playing capabilities it does not skip at all, although I only tried the DVD's me or my roommate had problems with it was nice and smooth there also 5 speeds of fast forwards rewind and frame by frame forward and reverse w/ also 5 speeds Another great feature is the bookmark and go directly to the spot on the menu bar which you can bring up. This also you gives you all the control you could want for the audio and video playback ontop of that it has all the standard features besides zoom.

OK here is a trick i use cuz i only have a 13" TV in my dorm room i tell the player i have a widescreen TV 16:9 format and it stretches the picture sure its a tad distorted (not bad though you can only tell on close ups )but everyone who watches it prefers that even on a bigger TV try it you'll easily forget about it its better to have a 8 inch tall pic than a 4 20 people didn't even notice at our thanksgiving party . even after i asked does this loook distorted? to much Drinkin Maybe

Well i love it so far and my Toy story 2 was fine (not on my smc though) some kid had a prob w/ that he may need a realignment of his laser

True IT is also very very fast
buy one especially if you want qaulity at an affordable price unless you have a G or 2 ta Drop but i figure most people dont includin myself fur people like me this sight rules i wish Kenwood would bringin back the xd 81 it was rated number 1 on this sight and only $350 for madd bass and exelent audio and prologic surround if ya can find one get it
