Strength:

Excellent picture; crystal clear slow-motion; Many Conveniences

Weakness:

Hard to find at this price

This is my first DVD player. I bought it because of its excellent overall rating on many web sites but especially here. Just doing my due dilligence and letting the public know this is an excellent product-- all the positive reviews are true. Thanks a million to those who take time to review.

Strength:

Best picture and sound quality. Quite transport. Loads fast.

Weakness:

Nothing

I will start by saying I will never be buying another toshiba product ever. I went through three of their dvd players in three weeks. They all had loud transports, took em all a long time to do layer changes, they all had picture artifacts (the 2300 having the worst). Hmm, I'll stop there. But now I have the dvd player I was gonna get in the first place but everyone was out of it. So now I have this great dvd player. So far no problems at all. Sound and picture are a step above all the toshiba products. Down conversion when watching anamorphic dvds is far and away better than the toshibas. I'll update when I get through more of my dvds.

Strength:

Name, Quality, Remote, Audio and Visual. Perfect Entry level player.

Weakness:

No bells and whistles. Will not play CDR's and lacks a screensaver.

Well, when I moved reenlty, the movers dropped my Panasonic A-100, which I have had for YEARS. Always loved it.

I used the insurance money to hunt for a $200 or under DVD player, but found none that offered the MAIN THING-Dependibility and Quality.

Other cheaper brands had fuller capabilities, multi-disc carousels, etc..but I wasn't biting...

Then, I saw that Sears price matched, and by a miracle, they price matched this model to $150..and I have a rebate of $50 coming.

Now, for a Panasonic, for $100, I am going to be a little biased here for the price...
But, to be fair..

This unit is solid. It is light, compact..not a heavy unit.
It provides GREAT VCD, DVD and CD playback.
It lasts a long time(I know MANY owners of Panasonics who have had them for years, also.)

The remote is easy, and while it seems everyone likes to complain about remotes, I rather like it.

This unit is certainly NOT geared for the higher-end crowd, or even those that want a FEW bells and Whistles..this is a STRAIGHT end DVD player.

The negatives are that after owning that old A-100, you'd think years llater, they would have juiced it up a bit..added a few things..but not really. There are some modes, but not accesable as a button touch feature.

I cannot fathom why a list priced $229 DVD player cannot play a CDR, but I have a nice audio system for music one foot away.

I am assuming this model will be readily available for around $150-$200..and if you read the reviews, or know people who have bought cheaper brands like KLH,Apex,etc..you will know they have 'more' to offer..but probably will not last you in the long term, or quite possibly, even fufill your MAIN need..watching movies in a smooth, nice manner.

Rest assured, this unit will play your Matrix disc, T2, etc..and look great doing it.

In spite of the flaws pertaining to lack of features, I STILL have to say this player is a 4.

It plays great, not noisy, not distracting, and the tray opens swiftly and loads fairly quick.

If you can score this unit for under $200, you got a good player. When you get ready for the bells and Whistles, this will STILL serve you well, even as your second unit..be it bedroom, living room, kids, whatever.

This machine is good.

And good goes a LONG way when it comes ot my DVD collection.

My only hesitation on two perfect 5's is the lack of CDR compatibility, and also the lack of a screensaver...(I believe..never left a movie on, and it isn't in the manual)

I will buy the Panasonic brand in the future, happily.

Strength:

Fantastic picture quality, great sound, Made in Japan and price.

Weakness:

The remote control.

This is my first DVD player and I bought it because I too agreed with the comments on this site about this player. I rented a Toshiba for 4 days and must say it was a very good machine except that it did mis-sync once and I found the picture to be, not as bright as the Panasonic's.

I compared the Sony and Panasonic, in store while watching "Saving Private Ryan" and the differences were very apparent. The Panasonic was definitely sharper compared to the Sony 360 model. The Sony picture was soft, which to me defeats the purpose of a DVD, if that's what you like. Stick to VHS. The feel of the Sony was better though including the remote but the Sony also mis-synched on the same disc that the Panasonic played right through.

I didn't even bother trying out the Pioneer because I picked it up and felt that it would fall apart in due time though that doesn't necessarily mean it will, just felt that way.

I bought the Panasonic for 368. canadian and it was actually slightly cheaper than all the rest that I looked at. I hope to have a long and pleasant experience with this machine like I had with my Sony Betamax.

Strength:

Price, quality, reliability

Weakness:

not all features of other players

I considered Toshiba 1600 and Pioneer DV333 also. The Toshiba had some software problems (posted on this site) and the Pioneer was comparable but more expensive.

I was able to take in a printout from etronics.com with the lowest price I could find and Sears matched it. With the $50 rebate the price was too good to pass up.

I played our first DVD last night (Fargo). The DVD locked up in one place probably due to a scratched DVD- it looked pretty bad when I pulled it from the machine and examined it. I'm running through s-video and the picture is great. I do not have a DTS receiver so I can't comment on the sound. For the price I'm impressed.

Strength:

Great Picture, Well thoughtout features

Weakness:

I would agree that the remote is a bit poorly designed, but it is completely functional.

I can add nothing to the myriad of comments already posted about this player, except to simply state that I am exceptionally happy with the player. My wife and I now about 50 DVDs and have had no problems playing any of these DVDs. With one possible exception, "Toy Story 2" gets to about chapter 26 and then goes back to the main menu. I'm still trying to find out if it's the DVD or the player but haven’t confirmed anything yet. Please send me e-mail if you have either successfully played or have had the same problem. My e-mail is FLCS@pacbell.net.

For all of you who are considering buying this player, I would still highly recommend it. The Toy Story 2 issue is probably not a player problem, "I hope"!

Strength:

Easy, simple, makes the job perfectly. RGB output coax, sub out, s-video out.
Very quick to load and start. Cute display.

Weakness:

No digital coax output, only optical. No Zoom. Can't play Cd'rs and all the stuff.

Mostly the best interface and the best remote control at all. Very easy and usefull. You dont search too much time.Tryed out some DVD's Toshiba and it's crap! I repeat : The set-up and the interface is very slick...

Great functions : 2x play with sound. Smooth imaging and image by image advance.

The front of the DVD is Ok, a little to simple to my taste but it's going to the right point : play DVD's!

Image and sound are very good. It's not a Marantz at all but it's not the same price! And itMs made in Japan... makes the difference sometimes. And Panasonic is a great buy most of the time. Great value quality/price.

But don't pay more than 300$ (can)... That's the top for me with my ratings.

Strength:

Similar to the A120. Subwoofer out, Components video, Optical Digital out, Price

Weakness:

Similar to the A120! The remote is slow to respond. No coaxial digital output.

The same strength and weakness of A120. The subwoofer output and the surround mode makes it especially appealing
to those without a home theatre receiver.

Strength:

Lets see....features!! Has more than I can count. It also has astounding sound and picture quality. I prefer it to my Pioneer (DV525), which I am thinking about selling.

Weakness:

If anything it would have to be the remote. Its not that bad but it could be better. (no worse than my last one)

Out of the four (including this one) that I auditioned, I think this one is my favorite. It was the right price (got it for $200), had many useful features, and had great performance. This was the first Panasonic component I have bought (aside from their phones which I also love) and I am not dissapointed.

One thing this unit did not display (for me anyway) was the annoying layer change delay (which the Pioneer did). It was seamless. It also plays all the problem discs (Matrix etc.). My previous favorite was the Pioneer unit I mentioned but this one is slightly ahead of it in my opinion.

Overall I must say I am very impressed with this player and would recommend it to anyone.

Strength:

Picture, Sound, and features.

Weakness:

remote (small buttons), and the chapter access ability (can't change just by pressing number keypad)

This thing is great!! I received it as a gift for my birthday and I absolutely love it!! The picture and sound are unbelieveable for the price. It also has a ton of features such as the ability to add a sub on to the unit itself. I reccommend it highly to anyone in the market for a DVD player at a decent price.
